2016 Pokémon World Championships Date & Location Surfaces

After months of trying to figure out if players would be traveling to the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco proper or the glamarous Cow Palace in Daly City, we’ve finally learned where we’ll find our 2016 Pokémon World Champion. The San Francisco travel site has a listing for Worlds between August 15th and 22nd at a hotel around the Moscone Convention Center. As the 15th is a Monday and a 7 day Worlds would be unprecedented, our expectation is that the first few days will be used for setup. We recommend holding off on booking travel until an official statement is made but you can start looking to plan around the weekend of August 22nd at the very least and potentially more!

More detective work has turned up the Marriott Marquis as the hotel that has rooms blocked off for Pokémon along with 117,000 square feet of meeting room space for the event. Hope to see you there! Credit to Georgenorth on Six Prizes for the discovery.

Glad to see that we’re in the nicer convention center, and I can’t wait for another worlds on my birthday! Unfortunate that it’s a late August date again, since that seemed to be an issue for a lot of people heading to school in some parts of the U.S. / going to college for the first time.

  5. Looks like if I make it I will miss the first day of school again… Oh well it’s worth it.

  6. has the VGC16 ruleset been announced?

  7. Looking forward to seeing world’s for the first time live.

Not yet, I’d wait until the new year for that announcement.

I like the location, a whole bunch to do around San Francisco!

It’s typically announced before the new year, as the format shift happens on January 1st. I would expect TPCI to release next year’s rule set within about 2 weeks or so, as they normally give us some time to adjust to the new format before it becomes the official format. I would hope they would continue this trend or else my January 3rd PC will be quite interesting lol

    Oh ok, thanks! :D

This overlaps with an event for the only competitive game I’m actually good at. I’ll still be there, though. Hopefully not playing so I can have a real vacation.

  12. Eiganjo says:

Great. I’ll be there obviously. Can start preplanning for my Holiday in San Francisco :D
Do hope they have some sidetournaments of Pokkén or something like that, so it can eventually be added to the lineup :P

Hoping to see you all again and see some new faces as well :D

    Can I cone?????????????????????

  14. SwagMasterD says:

Woo worlds on my birthday (≧∇≦)b

  15. GMan149 says:

Love the location seeing as I have a couple of cousins out there although it will be a long trek out there seeing as I’ll be coming from Massachusetts. 7 day worlds sounds interesting but I’m not sure how that’ll work. I would assume the first four days would be set up but if not then that would be a 4 or more day competition meaning that we could see a possible return of the LCQ. I would like to see what others think so please respond to this!

  16. BawlerBaws says:

San Fransisco for my first worlds. That sounds nice!

With the timeframe given I would assume Worlds starts on either the 18th or 19th and ends on the 21st, with the days before and after being for staff clean-up.

  18. SHUTupNrocK8 says:

Can’t wait to see when they’ll announce the 2016 ruleset, and as to what it’ll actually hold. I’m definitely not going to worlds, but Natty’s is a guarantee.

  19. Useless Crit FTW says:

But if there is a 6 day worlds, that would mean that day 1 wold be the opening ceremony, day 2 they would stream the Juniors TCG and VGC Swiss rounds, day 3 the top cut and finals for the Juniors TCG and VGC, Day 4 and 5 the same but with seniors, day 6 and 7 the same with Masters but with the Closing Ceremony at the end!
That’ll be a long championship for just a video game and a trading card game!

  20. My guess is that the first Monday to Thursday would be set up and Friday to Sunday would be the actual event

  21. Then why book in for a week for the winners, also have you looked at the set, yo can set that up in a day!

  22. feathers says:

They have to book rooms for the staff too, and set-up and take down does take multiple days. Worlds is likely going to be Thursday-Sunday, incredibly doubtful that they are going to expect us to pay for hotels in San Francisco for an entire week (averaging $350-$400 per night), and they barely have enough content outside of actual gameplay to stream for three days, never mind seven.

An entire day for the opening ceremony? You’re aware that lasts less than an hour, right?

  23. I meant at night for the opening ceremony, I just thought of it like that because I thought that they were going to go all out e-sports and it set up like that because the Olympics are happening in 2016 and it will be the VGC’s 5th anniversary.

You have to think about it logically. Like Feathers said, averaging $350-400 a night for 8 days/7 nights, you’ll be paying over $2,000 for a week of Pokemon which isn’t smart, and that doesn’t include food, gas money, and souvenirs, which creates a host of problems
