StreetPass UK Pokémon Autumn Event 2014

After a successful Pokémon Winter Event in 2013, Nintendo UK and StreetPass UK are once again treating UK Pokémon fans to a tournament series! Throughout September, October, and November, trainers will battle it out using their Nintendo 3DS and Pokémon X or Pokémon Y video game. Trainers will compete in Double Battles, constructed to match that of the official 2014 Pokémon Video Game Championships Series format. There will be 14 qualifier tournaments in total, culminating in a Grand Finals in Manchester on Saturday, November 22nd, 2014. To earn entry into the Grand Finals, you will need to place in the top four at a qualifier tournament. These qualifier tournaments are run by the StreetPass Group Founders, who organise gaming meet-ups around the country most weekends.

Prizing at each qualifier tournament is dependent on the tournament you attend and what the host can offer while the Grand Finals will offer great prize support, the most interesting of which will probably be copies of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire setting you up nicely for the VGC format switch in January next year.

The majority of the tournaments will run Single Elimination, Best of One game and competitors are allowed to enter as many of the tournaments as they wish — offering multiple chances at winning an invitation for the Grand Finals. The first events will take place this weekend in Southend and Manchester; we’ll certainly see some great battles throughout this series and an excellent final event in November.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Battle Format?
The Battle Format will be the official Video Game Championships 2014 rules. You can view them in full here.

  • Number of Players: Two-Player Match
  • Battle Format: Double Battle
  • Battle Rules: Flat Battle
  • Handicap: Off

What is the tournament format at each Qualifier Tournament?
The tournament format is Single Elimination, Best of One Battle* for all Qualifier Tournaments with the exception of Yeovil. Yeovil was organised before the tournament series was put together, but was chosen to be included in the structure. Yeovil will run a Swiss-style tournament with a potential top cut depending on the number of competitors. Only the top four will receive an invite to the Grand Finals, the same as every other Qualifier Tournament.

*At the judges discretion, they may allow for a different tournament format if the tournament attendance is low.

What is the tournament format at the Grand Finals?
The Grand Finals will run a Swiss-style Tournament with a top cut of eight players maximum. There will be five or six Swiss rounds depending on the number of competitors that attend.

Can I play in more than one Qualifier Tournament?
Absolutely. You are free to attempt qualification at as many events as you’re willing to attend.

Can I play in another Qualifier Tournament even if I already finished in the top four at a previous Qualifier Tournament?
Yes. Invites will be passed down to the next eligible player if a player manages to finish in the top four twice or more. Please make the tournament organiser aware if you have already qualified!

What are the prizes at the Qualifier Tournaments?
Qualifier Tournaments will run their own prizing structure, with prizes being awarded to either the top two or top four players. The top four players at each Qualifier Tournament will be awarded an invitation to compete in the Grand Finals in Manchester on Saturday, November 22nd, 2014.

What are the prizes at the Grand Finals?
The top eight players* at the Grand Finals will each win a copy of Pokémon Omega Ruby version or Pokémon Alpha Sapphire version in time for release on November 28th, 2014. Other Prizes TBA.

*Still to be confirmed.

Will there be travel stipends for qualified players?
Sadly no, there will be no travel stipends for players who finish in the top four at a Qualifier Tournament. Everyone will have to organise their own travel and/or accommodation for the Grand Finals.

Are there any age restrictions or age divisions for the tournaments?
No, anyone of any age can participate. All ages will be combined into one group so bear this in mind when entering any young children who may have to battle against players much older.

Has anybody got any news on Nottingham’s Streetpass Tournament? If it’s happening around October time, it’d be great to find out some details ASAP, because it allows people to make the decision of to attend or not. I found this link to a Pokémon Tournament that is hosted by Streetpass East Midlands at Walkabout in Nottingham on the 28th of September, but I don’t know if it relates to this or not. Somebody help us? :(

    External

  2. That is a separate event, and not the Autumn Event qualifier (:
I asked the SP EastMids organiser last week iirc and he hasn’t finalised a date, he’ll post it as soon as it’s confirmed though. It’s likely to be during GameCity which is the last week of October.

  3. Havak says:

What EPD said is right about Nottingham. The same goes for Lincoln as well, they’re just waiting to hear back from the venue for final confirmation, but those events are very likely to go ahead at the places mentioned already. Every other event is settled now, so I’ll be advertising this more today!

Thanks for all the support guys and I hope you enjoy playing.

  4. Joshawott says:

I’m the founder of StreetPass Cambridge and thus, the organiser of that External, so I thought I should pop in and plug my event because everyone should come to my one. We’re looking to be the last leg of the qualifying season, so we could be a great opportunity for anyone who is knocked out in an earlier event but wants one last shot at qualifying for the final.

One thing Chris mentioned is that a lot of StreetPass groups had to choose between one or the other in regards to this or Super Smash Bros., so I thought “Why not both?”.
My plan is to also run a Super Smash Bros. for 3DS tournament at the same event. The rulings for that will be decided once I have a clearer idea of how many people will be entering each, so it could end up with me having to run them both concurrently due to time constraints, so at the moment, it’s a choice of entering one or the other. (I think Nugget Bridge has a pretty unbiased opinion of what their option will be?). But yeah, if you know anyone who isn’t quite into Pokémon but would love a game of Smash, why not bring them along as well?

The Cambridge qualifier is being held in The Hexagon Room of the Frank Lee Centre, which is situation in the grounds Addenbrooke’s Hospital. External a map, just in case people get confused.
If on the day, you still can’t your way, ask anyone you see wearing a lanyard, because they’re most likely hospital employees and it is actually company policy for them to help out anyone who is lost :P. Luckily, the venue does have an outside entrance door though, so hopefully I can sort out some signage.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me here, or send me a private message.

You do not know how hard it is for me to not call the venue the “Edea Lee Centre”.

  5. Baz Anderson says:

bidoof, I am probably busy the same day as the Nottingham one – which would have been convenient for me. That’s a shame.

  6. Firestorm says:

Article posted! This is looking pretty awesome!

  7. Cinaclov says:

It depends where I’m living at the time these events happen as to if I join in on one (it might be possible for me to make Gloucester…possibly) and it’s unlikely I’ll have time to put much thought into a team if I do, but regardless it’s great to see events like this happening. Big thumbs up to everyone involved in getting this off the ground and hopefully it all goes well :)

  8. DJQuack8D says:

Gonna try and go to Birmingham; not sure I can make it to Grand Final should I get that far!

  9. Garchompguy says:

Gonna be at Manchester be prepared

  10. katesensei says:

Support for these things in Scotland is pretty lame sadly, and Newcastle’s organiser is for some reason not a fan of competitive tournaments for whatever reason.

Newcastle’s group organiser here – I’m not sure where you got that info from (can I ask where?) but we love competitive play and took part in the Winter Event last year.

We expressed interest in running an event as we are the largest SP group (measured on facebook members) with a lot of players. We were initially put as a maybe but were not consulted again and were frustrated to find that when we checked on the discussion thread organising things we had been passed over to run an event, and that Middlesbrough was going to cover the North East

I’m sorry to those hoping we were running one – we hate for our members to miss out. We’ll be hosting some Smash Bros competitive tournaments for those that are interested, and will be hosting Ruby/Sapphire events when they arrive too.

That information was from other StreetPass Group Organisers. I know Newcastle was part of the Winter Event, but after being told that I simply thought you entered purely because basically every group did! Haha.

Since I’m not in the discussion group, I left it to James to give me back the information on which groups wanted to do one, so whoever had said yes were the ones I picked. If you were up for hosting one I would have definitely said yes. Kick up a fuss next time :P I didn’t hear anything about you being disappointed at not getting to host one. London and Southend were not in the initial list, but were added shortly after, Southampton also merged with Portsmouth (who weren’t in the initial list until Southampton struggled with venues), so you should have just tried so sneak in there :)

Wish you would have brought this up a bit sooner now :(

  12. foodking2win says:

They can still host one cant they

No worries – to be honest I don’t frequent here and it was my understanding that everything was being relayed from the discussion there directly to you. We were pretty much told that that was the final list of groups without us so we left it there – I stumbled here this evening after our members starting asking why we weren’t running a qualifier – I had no idea that further groups had been added later.

I’m sorry for not mentioning it sooner – should you do it again I’ll contact you directly next time – We hope it goes well for you :) Similarly if you plan something be sure to let us know – you’re always welcome over at our group <3

Also, does anyone know how many we expect at the qualifiers? Specifically Manchester ;)

  17. MSK says:

Well we’re just about 24 hours away from the 1st Qualifier in Southend and it looks like being a tough field on the day.
So far confirmed attendance from the following Nuggetbridge members –

    MSK (me obviously)
    Falco
    StarKO
    Superintegration
    Toquill
    alanspurs
    DanDan64
    Foodking
    Ty Phlosion

Plus we’ve talked the organiser into Swiss (5 Rounds) so should be a good day. I’ll post results up and maybe do a report if I do well ;)

  18. Havak says:

You can also add PokéChamp to that list! Pretty stacked event for the first one, and it’ll only continue in Manchester on Sunday!

Got a team now not exacty the same but it will do untilk i bred the 3 that are wrong

  27. Aren142 says:

Well, might as well make a statement of intent and say that I’ll be turning up to Manchester on Sunday with a team that should be better than the Mono Fire team I ran all season. I’d have also liked to have gone to the Nottingham one but it’s on the absolute worst date for me. I would like to try for multiple ones and was wondering if anyone could fill me in on how close to train stations the events in Leeds and Liverpool are as those would be the next easiest for me to get to.

  28. foodking2win says:

I expect to lose badly today

  29. kibago11 says:

I’m coming with a camera and a friend. Should be there just after 1.
