StreetPass UK Pokémon Autumn Event 2014

After a successful Pokémon Winter Event in 2013, Nintendo UK and StreetPass UK are once again treating UK Pokémon fans to a tournament series! Throughout September, October, and November, trainers will battle it out using their Nintendo 3DS and Pokémon X or Pokémon Y video game. Trainers will compete in Double Battles, constructed to match that of the official 2014 Pokémon Video Game Championships Series format. There will be 14 qualifier tournaments in total, culminating in a Grand Finals in Manchester on Saturday, November 22nd, 2014. To earn entry into the Grand Finals, you will need to place in the top four at a qualifier tournament. These qualifier tournaments are run by the StreetPass Group Founders, who organise gaming meet-ups around the country most weekends.

Prizing at each qualifier tournament is dependent on the tournament you attend and what the host can offer while the Grand Finals will offer great prize support, the most interesting of which will probably be copies of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire setting you up nicely for the VGC format switch in January next year.

The majority of the tournaments will run Single Elimination, Best of One game and competitors are allowed to enter as many of the tournaments as they wish — offering multiple chances at winning an invitation for the Grand Finals. The first events will take place this weekend in Southend and Manchester; we’ll certainly see some great battles throughout this series and an excellent final event in November.

The Battle Format will be the official Video Game Championships 2014 rules. You can view them in full here.

  • Number of Players: Two-Player Match
  • Battle Format: Double Battle
  • Battle Rules: Flat Battle
  • Handicap: Off

What is the tournament format at each Qualifier Tournament?
The tournament format is Single Elimination, Best of One Battle* for all Qualifier Tournaments with the exception of Yeovil. Yeovil was organised before the tournament series was put together, but was chosen to be included in the structure. Yeovil will run a Swiss-style tournament with a potential top cut depending on the number of competitors. Only the top four will receive an invite to the Grand Finals, the same as every other Qualifier Tournament.

*At the judges discretion, they may allow for a different tournament format if the tournament attendance is low.

What is the tournament format at the Grand Finals?
The Grand Finals will run a Swiss-style Tournament with a top cut of eight players maximum. There will be five or six Swiss rounds depending on the number of competitors that attend.

Can I play in more than one Qualifier Tournament?
Absolutely. You are free to attempt qualification at as many events as you’re willing to attend.

Can I play in another Qualifier Tournament even if I already finished in the top four at a previous Qualifier Tournament?
Yes. Invites will be passed down to the next eligible player if a player manages to finish in the top four twice or more. Please make the tournament organiser aware if you have already qualified!

What are the prizes at the Qualifier Tournaments?
Qualifier Tournaments will run their own prizing structure, with prizes being awarded to either the top two or top four players. The top four players at each Qualifier Tournament will be awarded an invitation to compete in the Grand Finals in Manchester on Saturday, November 22nd, 2014.

What are the prizes at the Grand Finals?
The top eight players* at the Grand Finals will each win a copy of Pokémon Omega Ruby version or Pokémon Alpha Sapphire version in time for release on November 28th, 2014. Other Prizes TBA.

*Still to be confirmed.

Will there be travel stipends for qualified players?
Sadly no, there will be no travel stipends for players who finish in the top four at a Qualifier Tournament. Everyone will have to organise their own travel and/or accommodation for the Grand Finals.

Are there any age restrictions or age divisions for the tournaments?
No, anyone of any age can participate. All ages will be combined into one group so bear this in mind when entering any young children who may have to battle against players much older.

  1. Zog says:

Are the ORAS move tutors gonna be legal?

Might be worth clearing up, since the keeners amongst us will be able to get hold of tutored mons in time.

  2. Havak says:

Hmm, didn’t think about that, but I imagine some American / Japanese players will get the games a couple days early and blast through to the Move Tutors by Friday. Might be pushing it to get what you need by Saturday morning, but I’m sure some of you would manage it :P

So, I’ll say no to that for now and will update rules accordingly soon (should be a News Article on here once all qualifiers are completed).

  3. SirSmoke says:

Toquill has top bantz on the mic.

  4. foodking2win says:

all i can say is this i was close to quitting pokemon completely if it wasnt for chris barton getting me a team together so quick i wouldnt even be playing anymore but thanks chris thanks for a much needed 2nd chance at playing the best ever game in gaming which is pokemon and giving the chance to qualliffy for these manficent grand finals in manchester not once but twice so i can only say this thanks chris and roll on manchester indeed

  5. Probably a bit to early, and maybe not in the right post…but any plans for a similar tournament next year? My workload this term has been too much for me to commit to an event, made worse by the fact all the close events are on weeks where i’m very busy anyway. I’d love to attend if its running next year in the spring.

  6. P3DS says:

I’m really busy this weekend. Probably won’t be able to attend the Liverpool event ;-;. GL to all who go

  7. Cinaclov says:

Went to the Gloucester Streepass event and had a really great time. Considering that; I haven’t really played since Nationals, I was just using a slightly modified version of that same Nationals team and that a few days prior I’d made that team completely public through a couple of animations, I’d say I did pretty well, only losing to Jamie Miller (Blaze King7, if my quick search hasn’t failed me?), the eventual tournament winner.

Battles (note that not all of these are exceptional by any means, I made quite a few mistakes and I think a few others did as well but that’s what happens when you’re playing in a more casual environment with alcohol and stuff :P)

    Rd1 – ZU9W-WWWW-WWWA-ETVK
    Rd2 – 9WQW-WWWW-WWWA-ETVM
    Rd3 – XVJG-WWWW-WWWA-ETVN
    Rd4 – JQDG-WWWW-WWWA-ETVT
    Rd5 – XUDG-WWWW-WWWA-EUWW

On an aside, for those who’re interested and who I spoke to about this, my Amoongus’s speed was 212 evs = 77 Speed stat, 154 in Tailwind (Bold natured). That beats max speed neutral base 100’s, who reach a 152 speed stat (Zapdos, Salamence, Kangaskhan etc).

  8. Khorneguy says:

Just finishing up my team for the Cambridge event this weekend. Looking forward to it, even though I’m unlikely to be able to attend the Manchester one even if I do qualify, due to money issues :(

  9. NidoRich says:

Yeah I’m looking forward to this! Me and GGRussian are looking to qualify from this.

Hopefully I can make it even though it is looking tougher every day, I do fully believe in my team though.

    BEWARE OF BORIS!

  10. Havak says:

Post should go live on Nugget Bridge’s front page news this week with full information on the Grand Final. However, a few important notes I want to make you extra aware of first:

    1. You can’t bring spectators at will, there will be a guest-list formed through various means, but spectators will need to send an e-mail in and be chosen on a first-come-first-serve basis.
    2. If you’re under the age of 18, you need a parent or guardian with you at all times to be allowed in the building as it is primarily a bar rather than an events venue.
    3. You can’t bring your own food or drink into the venue, but every competitor will get a free drink and some free food. If there’s enough food then it may be shared out to spectators as well, but you’re free to buy your own inside the venue, or go out and get your own food and eat it outside if you wish.

The e-mail address to contact will be posted below. Title the e-mail “StreetPass UK Pokémon Autumn Event 2014 Spectator” with the person’s full name and you should receive a confirmation e-mail back if you are accepted. Priority is given to parents/guardians of people under the age of 18 and also care workers if required. State this in the e-mail to make sure you are selected:

    BEWARE OF BORIS!

I’m mainly looking to see out the 2014 meta in style and hopefully win an e-shop voucher to pay towards my copy of OR/AS, due to my money issues :)

If I can qualify and somehow pull the money together for Manchester, it’ll be even better :)

You know the Russian as well? :o Hopefully see you there along with Matty, WhiteAfroking, Birch and Toku!

bidoof. This is set to be one fun qualifier.

    StreetPass Cambridge Founder here!

I’ve had some suggestions about changing the tournament format from Single Elimination to Swiss, which I was originally hesitant to do due to time restraints. I need to email the venue later today anyway (about things like tables and chairs – I hear people like those) and I’ll drop a question about internet access. If I can get access to an internet connection that will let me use tournament software like Challonge, then I’ll be happy to change the format to Best-of-1 Swiss. If that’s not possible or I’m unable to tether my friend’s internet to my laptop, then I’ll probably go with Best-of-3 Single Elimination instead. Either way, it won’t be Best-of-1 Single Elimination any more – I originally only went with that because I was unsure what attendance would be like and I didn’t want to lock myself down to something more complicated and have too many people show up.

Due to the number of people who have signed up to each tournament, my current plan is to get the Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS tournament done in the morning (If it begins at 10:30, then I think it’s highly likely that it will be finished by 12:00; maybe even 11:30 or earlier – let’s just say that Pokémon has over three times as many competitors). So the Pokémon tournament will probably be starting around noon.

  14. foodking2win says:

So it looks like cambridge is going to be a very good last chance quallifier then by the sounds of it good luck to everyone entering i will be in yeovil that day for the primier challenge so looks like were all very busy

  15. Blaze King7 says:

Had a great time in Gloucester, the tourny was very well run and the people were all lovely. T’was a very fun final between me and SirSmoke with everyone gathered around watching. Very much looking forward to seeing everyone at Manchester! <3

  16. Joshawott says:

I just thought I’d check in regarding the status of the Cambridge qualifier. Unfortunately, due to a technical hiccup with the projector (which I was planning to use to display the Challonge bracket), the tournament started slightly later than planned. We even had Cambridge News come in to take some photos!

However, the second round of Swiss has just finished and we are taking a brief break for lunch. If you want to follow the tournament’s bracket though, here’s a link.

  17. Terrariauk says:

Great day at Cambridge, came top 8 having lost to Nidorich. Had it robbed from me due to some stupid plays I am never making again! Great night at spoons beforehand, and great day with the Walsall gang at the actuall event. Highest 3-2 resistance for the win with a 10.0! xD All comes down to the ballot now, but hoping to get in via that and give myself one last chance to prove myself in this metagame before ORAS comes out! :)

  18. Joshawott says:

The Cambridge event is now over and I’m sat in the front room with aching feet and watching Despicable Me. Due to the time limits, we had a Best-of-1 Top Cut of 8, but the final was Best-of-3. The Top Cut was:

    Richard Fairbrother (Nidorich) – Winner
    William Blakey – Runner-Up
    Joe Wilson – Qualifying Player
    Matt Carter – Qualifying Player
    Jacob Norman
    Sadli Rafik
    Andrew Fairbrother
    Matthew Williams

I want to give a shout-out to all of the people who were kind enough to help me clear all the chairs and tables away at the end of the day.

  19. NidoRich says:

Despite the technical problems and connection issues with the ds’s it was an amazing day and a big shoutout to Joshawott for a greatly planned qualifier with great prizes, was totally worth the 4 hours sleep and 3 hour train journey.

It didn’t start off well for me, losing to a Hydro Pump miss on Sword form Aegislash, but then I go on a tear turning a 0-1 into a 4-1 getting top cut and then going all the way to the final, pipping Russian to the final and playing Blakey’s brother in the final. After losing game 1 in a close game I edge games 2 and 3 to win it all.

Thank you everyone and thank you BORIS!

  20. Joshawott says:

Yeah, the technical problems as a whole were very weird. I planned to have the projector display the Challonge brackets throughout the tournament and while the projector was working perfectly during initial set-up, when it came to actually starting the event, it just stopped working. Even when the venue brought in the tech guys from the hospital, they couldn’t figure out what had caused it either. That’s why I had to announce all of the match-ups via the microphone!
Then there was the 3DS connection issue (people had difficulty getting their systems to connect inside the venue, but they worked fine outside). Some possible explanations that have been suggested to me include the shape of the building (funnily enough, it was a hexagon) or the building materials used due to its age interfering with the signals (the room’s about forty years old).

I was admittedly very nervous about this event because while I’ve been hosting StreetPass meets for over a year now, this was definitely my most ambitious one yet! So I’m really glad to hear such a positive reception!

  21. Dippydunker says:

Was a great event today in Cambridge! Also incidentally my first event, was great meeting everyone and looking forward to taking part in more events in the future :)

  22. Joshawott says:

The photographer only attended during the Smash Bros. tournament, hence the lack of Pokémon games being played in the pictures.

  23. P3DS says:

It was a wonderful day today at the final. Brilliant to see everyone and play. Grats to Zog for winning, and taking raichu to the top =]

  24. NidoRich says:

    So. Many. Raichu!

  25. Krunks says:

Great event yesterday – me and the boy had a blast – was even good enough to raise me from nugget bridge lurker to member :)

  26. Baz Anderson says:

Actually had a great day. It was really nice to see so many good friends and good players there.

I hadn’t played Pokémon properly for a couple of months and wasn’t totally in the mood for it in the morning, but I ended up doing pretty well. I made no secret that I was using the same team – again – but still top cut and won my way to the top 4.

I “commentated” the final, which was actually a whole lot of fun. Hopefully you guys enjoyed that. I had a bunch of fun in my games on the big screen too, finally getting a picture with my team preview, and jokingly getting the audience to pick my moves for me, ha.

    Spoiler

    So thanks to all involved!

Also, here’s a cool group photo.

The top 8 was pretty intense, yet so hilariously brilliant.(Darn kingdra, you seem to always fail on me when I really need it  :D). Was pretty chuffed to see that half of top 8 had Raichus

  28. NidoRich says:

Yeah I think I’ll weigh in on the days events too :)

I went into the event after winning the Cambridge event the week before and knew it would be a tough day so I only wanted to get top cut really. My first game I played SuperIntergration which was a tough start….and throughout the swiss it was tough as I played 5/6 NB players which included a loss vs P3DS. After that I played even more NB players, playing Benster, Miller, Baz and them Zog in the final. I will admit that I got lucky with a para in Game 2 against Baz but I think I got that handed back to me against Zog haha

It was an all-round excellent day and I can’t wait for te next one, I’ve gotten much better this season and can’t wait to meet everyone next year to do it all again!

  29. Benster says:

I had a wonderful time at this event. The organisers and staff were friendly as usual, the rounds progressed smoothly and I had no connection issues whatsoever.

I just missed out on qualifying through Manchester, and ended up qualifying through Middlesbrough. I didn’t expect to do particularly well in the final, but knew it would be a fun day regardless. Going 4-2 in the Swiss rounds was better than expected, losing to SirSmoke and Zog. With some good fortune in there being play-offs for top 16 due to the rounds progressing without delay, I managed to top cut after a battle with MrNealio. That was as far as I got, losing 2-1 to NidoRich in top 16, the battles were fantastic though and I regret nothing.

After losing in the second round of the Pokémon Winter Event final, going 3-2 in Manchester Pokémon Tournament #6, losing in the semi-finals of the Pokémon Battle Tournament Sheffield qualifier and not attending UK Nationals due to exams, getting my first top cut was a great way to round off my first year of playing VGC. I would like to thank the University of York Pokémon Society for introducing me to this format, and everyone in the community for being amazing in general. I look forward to another year of battling and meeting wonderful people!
