2014 International Challenge – June

The second and final International Challenge is coming up in a few weeks! As the final chance for European players to earn points before Worlds and North American players to earn points before Nationals, it’s going to be a very heated event! The Top 128 players in each age division from each of those two regions will receive Championship Points for their efforts.

The International Challenge is an online ladder-based tournament. You will be able to play up to 20 battles per day (unplayed games will roll over to the next day) from 00:00 UTC on Friday, June 20th, 2014 (5:00 PM PDT on Thursday, June 19th ) to 23:59 UTC on Sunday June 22nd, 2014 (4:59 PM PDT on Sunday June 22nd).

To register, you’ll need to have an account on Pokemon.com and register your game with the Global Link. Your game must be attached to the same account that has the player ID you use to play in Regionals, Nationals, and other events in the Play! Pokémon program if you want to receive Championship Points. You will be able to participate if you are one of the first 50,000 players to register on the Global Link for the event between 00:00 UTC on Thursday June 12th, 2014 (5:00 PM PDT on Wednesday, June 11th) and 23:59 UTC on Thursday, June 19th, 2014 (4:59 PM PDT on Thursday, June 19th).

The tournament will use the Standard ruleset and should prove to be the most competitive tournament yet with thousands of players worldwide playing to prove themselves and increase their chances at a World Championship invite! Championship Points will be awarded as follows:

Placement Points
1 10
2–8 8
9–16 4
17–64 2
65–128 1

Stopping tonight at 11 W – 2 L. One of those losses came from a DC on my end because a thunderstorm blew in and made my 3DS internet connection shaky. My other loss came from me somehow thinking it was a great idea to bring Kangaskhan against a team with Aegislash, Gengar AND Mawile. Still almost won though.

    Highlights:

    • Enemy Tyrantrum has been putting up surprisingly good fights. One fought normally, but the other one went man-mode with Quick Claw Head Smashes left and right. Still won
    • Substitute Bulk Up Toxicroak in the rain exists. I don’t think this guy got the memo that singles sets usually don’t translate well into VGC
    • Getting 1 turn sleeps against Hypnosis Crobats is awesome
    • Trick Room Meowstic is something to look out for, but still an inferior TR setter imo
  2. TKOWL says:

Reached the end of my first session, currently at 8-2. First loss was against a ScarfSwine going crazy and eliminating my Rotom-H and then sending Yzard/Venu to clean everything up because I was an idiot and brought Ferro to a match where there were three mons with Fire moves, second was to me not factoring in a certain move when defensively EVing a mon, and the match ending in a tranformed Smeargle-Florges versus my Florges, which I unfortunately lost the stall war. Ah well, just gotta make sure I can keep my confidence the whole tourney.

  3. rapha says:

How many Greninjas are you guys seeing this time around?

  4. GreySong says:

Stopping for the night. It’s thunderstorming outside and I don’t want to risk another DC on my end. -__-
Currently at 14-1 somewhere around the 1670-1680’s. Teams from my end are still pretty standard, but I’ve noticed I’ve been seeing a lot more rain than usual.

  5. Drizzleboy says:

Ended up 17-3 and I think around 1650-1670 rating.

  6. Boah says:

    i ended 17-3 too xP

  7. Architeuthis says:

Ended my first session at 7-2. Made a few misplays against an intresting safe swagger trick room team. I’ll pick it up again in a few hours. Has anyone else been seeing a surprising amount of Exploud?

  8. joej m says:

    NEVER EVER USE RAIN
    Its 100X drunker than smeargle
    13-7

Hydro Pump? lol not hitting those
    Power Whip? haha good joke
ludicolo and ferrothorn are getting released after this

  9. Fiasco says:

0-1. Internet disconnected first turn against someone using delphox and blastoise. Verizon technician is coming in the morning. :(

  10. Cybertron says:

5-1, turbo Aegislash is too real

  11. Lejn says:

5-1, turbo Aegislash is too real

I actually chose to run a different team because I couldn’t breed my sonic-slash in time.  :(

  12. kingofmars says:

17-2-1 so far, ID’d vs Simon, should be bit below 1700

  13. Stormfront says:

Stopping at 10-1 for the night.

    1635.

The only loss came against a fellow 1630 Japanese player when I was around 1550.

Nothing of note in any match really, pretty standard teams. Most interesting thing I saw was a Slowking which was OHKO’d on T1.

  14. chipndip says:

Lum Berry Aegislash almost bodied me.

Then again, this is the first time I’ve  seen/heard of Lum Berry Aegislash. >_>

Edit: Finished up for now with 13W/2L. Both losses were chokes on my part, especially the first one. Still, I’m loving the team I’m using. I always get all giddy when I remember that Round hits through subs. :3

Gonna finish up the last 5 rounds tomorrow. Since I’m at 1650+ atm, I’m expecting tougher competition from here on out.

  15. OneTrueKing says:

10 battles in this June International and I have already faced 4 Snarl Mega Manectrics, they are quite annoying if I do say so. Did not see so many of these before.

  16. Werford says:

Ended up 15-5 and north of 1620 rating after the first night. I’m pretty happy so far with the team. Heliolisk has been putting in quite a lot of work so far, but we’ll see how it does later on. Tonight has also cemented that Mawile would be far and away my favorite Mega if it weren’t for the 90% on Play Rough. Missed two consecutive ones in a match and nearly cost me.

I bred teams for my friends too but I don’t think any of them played too much. One I forgot to tell her to reraise Kanga’s happiness for Return, and another wasn’t far enough in the game to get her Mega Bracelet yet so she gets to use an essentially itemless Ampharos. The only notable event from their games was one of the girls going full Zheng mode, missing three consecutive Will-O-Wisps (about .3% probability, if I calculated correctly).

  17. no2moloh says:

currently 9-3….felt kinda bad beating someone with ign:omar as i only won bcoz of a crit when we both are down to our last mon chipping each other with abt the same amount of %damage output and he outspeeds me….and greninja’s are everwhere…9/12 matches the opponents have them…..6 used….and face only a singleton scarfed exploud(and i lost to it T_T)

It kinda makes sense as back in the early days of Aegislash battling everyone just WoW’ed the thing as all were physical Swords Dance builds. Great to see your Round team doing so well :D

After ending at 23-17 in May because I was mentally drained on Day 2 (having concentration problems sucks on so many levels for a gamer! >.<) I decided to take it more easy this time by doing only 10 battles each day. I must say it really helps to just take it easy and not try to cram as many maches as possible into 1 day as I’m still feeling quite “fresh” so to say. Finished at 8-2 for today at a 1590 rating with 1 loss due to me choking and 1 due to hax, but I also won 1 match thanks to hax so it evens out nicely. Gourgeist hasn’t been able to pull its weight yet, but I’m sure it will once I get the hang of using it… and having 7 fights with Charizard Y/Talonflame cores in them doesn’t help xd

    Things noticed:

    – Since we a have a lot of newcomers in the IC we get a lot of the usual November Day 1 stuff like Greninja swarms, Swords Dance Aegislash and weird gimmicks like Swagger + Foul Play Malamar and Rocky Helmet Greninja o.O
    – Charizard Y and Mamoswine are gaining popularity and half of the opponents who had Khan didn’t bring it despite it being a troublesome mon for my team. Guess Gourgeist did serve as a kangaroo deterrent at the very least :P
    – Agressive play is, just as in the early rounds of the German National, recommended when fighting lower ranked players as most don’t carry Protect or rarely use it. High level mindgames tend to work against you when facing them…

    PS

Facade Kangaskhan has returned! The world will tremble at its feet! :P

  19. Boomguy says:

14-6 today.  Biggest Highlight was defeating Legacy. Interesting team man.  1 loss to D/C :(.  Biggest lesson of the day is to keep my self composed after losing hax a moment and to keep focus for a win result.

  20. Hanare says:

I just saw a Smeargle/mega-Kangaskhan combo… I never had problem with that lead, but then I saw Smeargle morphing into mega-Kangaskhan…

  21. GiraGoomy says:

Only had time to do 3 Battles today which sucks but I came out 3-0 so i’m happy with that. Around 1540-1550.

  22. no2moloh says:

same here…and that smeagle is even faster !!!

  23. Hanare says:

You mean that it was a hacked Smeargle ? Smeargle max speed is 273 if I recall correctly ~

  24. Pyritie says:

5-1, turbo Aegislash is too real

Is that autotomize weakness policy aegi?

  25. LLeonard says:

Fished the first session 6-1 sitting around 1575-1580, i saw many greninja and smeargle, but scarf abomasnow is my answer to it

  26. melevin9 says:

i think im 10-2 (or 11-2) and on a rating of 1625 so far. I have been completely smashed by Boah and Devon from MA (not sure if dingram) and got quite a bit unlucky vs Greyson.

Whoever devon from MA is i want so say that i did not DQ and i think that the problem came from your end. I didnt get a win or loss from it although i deserved the loss and hopefully you never got a loss from it either.

  27. Thowra says:

Faced 2 Noiverns, and neither of them had Frisk. Wut.

5-0 so far, but 3 of my battles was only won because of hax – my Garchomp dodged 2 WoWs and a Play Rough (on three separate battles). I don’t know why but because of the cheap wins I feel like I’m at 2-3 >.<

  28. Adib says:

Ending Day 1 at 16 W – 4 L, though 3 of those losses were DCs on my end (just when I was about to win too :( ). I guess this is the price I have to pay for not having internet at my apartment and mooching off of free wifi five minutes away. I’m starting to get worried about my DC rate over the entire tournament. Does anyone know if you get banned from future tournaments if your DC rate is too high?

That said, it’s not like this tourney actually matters for someone who has as little CP as I do. I’m still having a lot of fun in this tourney. My favorite gimmick match by far was against this Cloud Nine Soak Golduck+Shedinja+Cloyster+Rocky Helmet Snorlax. I redirected the Soak away from Shedinja with Amoonguss to turn it into a Water type. Then, I let my new Water type Amoonguss wall the heck out of Cloyster and its formerly-super effective Icicle Spears.

  29. bombe32 says:

    Hydreigon used Draco Meteor!
    Hydreigon’s attack missed!
    Gengar used Will-o-Wisp!
    Gengar’s attack missed!
The opposing Hydreigon used Draco Meteor!
    RIP

Snow Cloak Glaceon is also a thing now apparently, lol.

My plan now is to wait until late night, where the Japanese players are sleeping and hope that there will be less gimmicky teams during this time of the day :) . A couple of good battles so far, best one must be against someone called MATTY from Italy where I choked on the final turn.

  30. solarman64 says:

My team still isnt done. I cant decide on my last two, either ttar and wow taunt gard or azu and genar with wow and taunt. I have aegi khan mence and rotom h ready 2 go at this time so are azu and gengar. Ttar is still lvl 11 and i just finished gard.
