Additional Details on Pokémon X and Y via Nintendo Dream

A few days ago, クリスタル and Silktree of Bulbagarden posted a translation of key points from a Nintendo Dream interview with Mr. Junichi Masuda and Mr. Shigeki Morimoto on mechanic changes in Pokémon X and Y. It included some very interesting and relevant information for competitive players. Today, we have more information from that interview via contributor tanzying. ~Firestorm

For the information already revealed before, please check Bulbanews.

  • Spore has no effect on Grass-type Pokémon
  • Mr. Morimoto anticipates a trend in which Drought Charizard is popular and teams are built in order to counter it.
  • Horde encounters were introduced because Mr. Masuda said, “I would love to see places where Pokémon flock together!”. It allows us a glimpse into the lifestyle of Pokémon.
  • The idea behind sky battles was that players might want to battle other (NPC) trainers in the traditional line of sight, even if they were at a different elevation level (as in up a ledge/hill etc)
  • “Lowering the threshold for battles” was a consideration in this game. Super training is a “crash course” of sorts with the purpose of allowing even players without detailed knowledge of EVs to be able to stand up to strong players. Through Super Training, players will be able to understand the fundamentals of Pokémon training.
  • It is recognised that events such as those part of the WCS circuit (in other words VGC events) suffer from a lack of being able to project battles onto the big screen.
  • Through broadcasting video feed from live competitions using Nico streams, the excitement from the venue will be able to be transmitted directly to viewers.

I guess this means MegaLutions will be used in VGC….!

Everything revealed so far has pretty much confirmed Mega Evolutions being allowed in tournament play. I’m not sure why you would have thought that was up for debate…

Mega Evolutions will be restricted to one per team in battle as was previously revealed. From what crobert was telling me, the Japanese website has it worded in a way that implies you will not be able to revert to regular form in the battle after mega evolving. So Charizard cannot go Drought -> Solar Power -> Mega Evolve again for Drought to counter new weather.

It sounds like we’re getting a spectator mode. I was sort of worried about what they would do about projecting games from digital copies since saves are locked to a system. Although, I guess they could have used special 3DSs that ignore that (and region lock for Worlds).

This was pretty much confirmed when the X and Y demos were playable, videos are playable on YouTube, when Mewtwo was in battle, it showed on the Mega Evolve button at the bottom of the bottom screen, on the next turn when Mega Evolved, that button disappears.

  4. Firestorm says:

The demo isn’t representative of the game. You can’t even pick when you Mega Evolve in the demo. It forces you to whether or not you click the button.

That’s something I actually never thought about in relation to digital copies. The current way they do things would definitely be an issue if both finalists were using digital copies… I think he was talking about that line in the context of the new visuals, but spectator mode would be awesome.

  5. araluen7 says:

So does that mean if it switches out it will stay Mega-evolved? Or was that just referring to as long as it’s active on the field?

  6. bearsfan092 says:

It would probably remain through a switch.

I like that they acknowledge that streaming is an issue, but I don’t like that they haven’t mentioned anything to fix it.  That’s what our game sorely needs right now.

  7. tanzying says:

I need to first state that this is all quite sudden and unexpected for me and that I didn’t know Firestorm would consider this small piece of information worthy enough to make a front page article about.

But regarding the big screen thing, I feel I must admit that my Japanese is not good enough to be absolutely sure about that particular point and other people I know have told me things like:

    As for 「WCSなどのイベントの大きいスクリーンバトル画面を見ていて飽きないカメラワークを意識した」,
    I interpreted it differently…
‘We took the camera work into consideration such that people won’t get tired of watching battles on the big screen at events like the WCS’

I have to admit that that is a possibility after reading it. It could also have meant things like “We recognise that people did not get tired of watching the big-screen camerawork/projection done at the WCS events”, implying that they know that people would like more battles on the big screen.

Again, I’m sorry my language skills aren’t good enough to be sure and if I had known this was going to go on the front page I would definitely have scrutinised it alot more…

  8. Firestorm says:

That’s what what I interpreted out of your translation as well. Basically, this better conveys the excitement of the event to the people watching it (at the event and over streams).

One thing I would expect is something like a USB thing that plugs into your computer that can pick up the signal of streaming via the 3DS connection (is it a form of bluetooth or something??) and then you can stream straight to twitch or record or something similar. Basically like a wifi dongle, it picks it up

    So a 3ds capture card?
