39Kickstarter Begins for Documentary on the Pokémon Video Game Championships
Looking to follow the footsteps of esports documentaries like Free to Play and The Road to Worlds, To Be the Very Best will cover the path of some of the best players in the Pokémon Championship Series as they aim for the title of World Champion. Coordinated by 2x US National Champion Wolfe Glick (Wolfey), the feature length documentary will focus on stories from players like Aaron Zheng (Cybertron) and Ray Rizzo (Ray) but also interviews from all members of the community done during events. To Be the Very Best‘s goal is to showcase the strength of the Pokémon community and the side of players you might not get to see during a tournament match or on stream.
To ensure a quality production, To Be the Very Best will be directed by Emmy award-winning Dan Karlok (Law and Order) with advising from Matt Weaver (Jiro: Dreams of Sushi, We’re the Millers, Rock of Ages). By using Kickstarter, the team hopes to harness the power of the community to create something that can give a boost to the competitive side of Pokémon the same way The Smash Brothers did for the competitive side of Super Smash Bros. Melee.

This is one of the best ideas I’ve ever heard. I’ll definitely do my best to promote this in every way I can. Just watching the promo video made me all giddy with excitement! I sincerely hope that this will succeed.
If I manage to sneak some spare funding, i’d love to see this do well. I am a little concerned about the level of coverage outside of the US, but I could imagine it’s gonna be hard enough to do what they’re doing already. Also, will they be talking to players of varying skill levels? It would be great to not only have some coverage of good players finishing well, but also of players who are turning up for their first shot at nationals/ worlds. Either way, it’ll be good to see some more footage of worlds, since i’ll prolly never end up being there!
I look forward to the fruits of their labour
will you be filming in the west coast too?
Is this why Eggy Emporium hasn’t been updated in so long?
Anyway, take my donation & best wishes!
It is not the only reason, but in the long run it seems like this documentary is the better way to help the competitive scene grow.
thanks for the support everyone so far, but it is still quite a challenge ahead of us! So spread the word etc
I hope prettylittleliar has screentime
Will definitely back this. After producing a short film for a college course this semester, I can definitely feel for the ammount of work and effort that goes into producing a film, especially if you guys plan to go above and beyond (which I know will happen if this gets past pre-production and kickstarter).
Backed it up! While I was browsing the backer reward I coudn’t set my mind on if the rewards were stupid and lame or incredibly awsome and creative. I must admit, I was tempted to pledge so Wolfe name a mon after me at worlds.
does this include seniors and juniors or just masters
I haven’t said anything about this film yet. I’m excited about it :)! I have a feeling this is gonna be big :)! I wish I was in that documentary :)!
