Results from the Pokémon 2014 Germany National Championships

The European portion of the Pokémon Video Game Championship Series has kicked off with the very first National Championship of the season! With such a large amount of Championship Points at stake and no Regional or Premier Challenge level events in the region, these tournaments will have a massive impact on players vying for a World Championship invite. Additionally, it guarantees that the Top 16 from this tournament will receive a bye three weeks from now at the event in the United Kingdom. The top 32 players in Europe as determined by Championship Points at the end of the season will receive an invitation to the 2014 Pokémon World Championships in Washington, DC, USA. The top 16 will have their flights and accommodations paid for as well.

The Championship Payout for this event was as follows:

Placement Points Kicker
1 480 0
2 440 0
3–4 360 0
5–8 210 0
9–16 150 0

Really amazing run by Yoshi. I’d have had him penciled into the smart money had I written the Germany preview myself since about February, but doing as well as he did is still shocking, because seriously, who goes 16-0 in a Pokemon tournament, especially in a format like this one? Really pleased that he won. All I want every year from the qualification part of the season is for the best players to make it to Worlds, and I think it’s pretty obvious with how much effort he’s put in this year that he’s one of the best players in the world. Good for him to get this locked up early, and I think he’s an early favorite to take Worlds itself, too. I think other than maybe Ray’s 2012 Worlds run this is probably the most impressive single tournament performance I can remember anyone ever having.

Congratulations to all the players who cut, especially the top 4, who probably have their trips locked up. The results post shows me that I apparently somehow managed to battle three of the top four from this tournament during NB Major swiss, so I know some strong players are coming out of this tournament. Excited to see how they do in DC!

  2. Firestorm says:

Did anyone remember to tell Yoshi that it wasn’t single elimination anymore?

PS: I need to know who won between Seniors Seed #1 vs #8 as well as info on basically all of Juniors.

  3. melevin9 says:

Interesting to see yoshi run double mega plus the kangaskhan+gengar combo which won the asia cup but hasnt quite caught on down here. Gutted to see fan favourite Lajo fall in top8 again. Rip lajo :(

  4. iZocker says:

Hey I was #8 at Seniors (Tim S.) and lost against Lennard L. . It was very funny to topcut with only 5 Mons (lol forgot the last one) at my first VGC

  5. Bjart says:

Auf gehts Jose kämpfen und siegen!

Zacharias Daum is a well known player in the German Community, his online name is “Mercury”. He is one of the best players there, especially on the simulators. Knowing that, it is not that surprising to see him in the Top8, even though this was his first time attending a VGC Event.
As I was not there, I cannot tell you anything about Seniors or Juniors though.

  6. iZocker says:

Hey I was #8 at Seniors (Tim S.) and lost against Lennard L. . It was very funny to topcut with only 5 Mons (lol forgot the last one) at my first VGC. Also I want to greet TD99 he’s.a very cool guy

  7. StandardGuy says:

    Awesome record!

    Congrats Yoshi.

  8. TheAshAttack says:

Congrats to lajo on his top 8 finish as well!

  9. kingofmars says:

Shoutout to all the people giving out false information on twitter.

Also big congrats to Lajo for getting top 8 after starting 0-2

  10. DoppelGengar says:

Shoutout to all the people giving out false information on twitter.

A.k.a. making SapphireBirch rage all over IRC.

Congrats to Yoshi for taking this one, even with such a tough schedule. And to Porengan for getting that far with a pretty interesting team.

  11. Werford says:

why was birch raging on irc, wasn’t he there?

  12. Firestorm says:

    Birch made top cut.

Thanks to Angel and Biosci for updating through the night on Saturday and Sunday as well as all the people who sent in updates btw! As much as we’ve grown, this community is still an incredibly close one and everyone is always dying to know how their friends are doing no matter where they are in the world. It means a lot!

  13. R Inanimate says:

Congrats to Yoshi, and to those else who have secured their worlds invite.

  14. Mentosbombe says:

Shoutout to all the people giving out false information on twitter.

Also big congrats to Lajo for getting top 8 after starting 0-2

what do you mean after starting 0-2?

  15. what do you mean after starting 0-2?

That’s part of the false information that was given out – someone said that he went 0-2 at the start falsely =P

Congratulations to everyone who took part and Yoshi for his victory. Also a big well done to Jake for making the top cut and having a genuinely great season so for (top 4 in Manchester, I expect to see some shenanigans at UK VGC’s too). Lastly, consolations to Havak for having some very bad luck in the rounds with flinches, etc. It’s affected plenty of games this season already but it’s always a shame to hear about it affecting placements in Nats. Wish you good luck for the next event you go to

  16. Billa says:

Still in Love with Vivillion <3

  17. blueboy says:

Props on getting this done so fast. See you all next year guys. haha

    5. Arthur T. ( ME :] )
    6. Adrian S.
    7. Batuhan C.
    8. Tim S.

  18. rapha says:

16-0 oh my goodness, what a performance

  19. NidoRich says:

Really disappointed that my two haxy losses cost me a top cut place but there’s always Manchester. Long Live Lapras! Oh and I heard Yoshi had a good day too :3

  20. Lejn says:

Yoshi couldn’t have made a bigger statement about contending for the world championship if he tried, what a performance.

Here’s hoping Lajo can still find his way to Worlds with another strong finish.

  21. TwiddleDee says:

Wow, an incredible run by Yoshi! Congrats to him and everyone else who placed well! I’m interested to see how UK Nats go =]

Also, thanks to everyone who provided info on Twitter (well… those who provided true info).

  22. KLVkboom says:

Gratz on the incredibly strong finish Yoshi, you’ve definitely made a big statement of being one of the best contenders for Nats as well as upcoming worlds.

  23. seasicknesss says:

I think what the majority of this community is thinking is “EHAT IZ DIS GUISE TEEM SO I KAN STEEL IT AND FLOOD PS WIT IT.”

(The punch line of the joke is that I said PS because the in-game VGC ladder is dead)

    Gj Yoshi :3

  24. Lord Gatr says:

Congratulations to Yoshi a well deserved victor and well done to Falco on his first ever VGC awesome performance. Well done to all those who top cut it was a great tournament. See you all in Milan.

  25. Cisklian Giannakos in 15th place is called sagaciousslowpoke on the forums by the way.

Also, Steve Edgson’s username is SirSmoke. I don’t know if he has an account on the forum though

  26. Feis says:

Congrats again to Yoshi for such a tournament sweep and also to Lega, who made it to Top 4 after starting 0-1. I’m also very happy that Porengan managed to get to the Top 4 after knocking me out in the first round of Topcut (i love your team <3).

Aß for my part, i’m happy that i made it to Top 16 after going 7-1 in Flight 1, only losing to the eventual winner Yoshi in the last round of Swiss. Also, if i look at the Topcut participants, i’m like the only player who was a Senior last year, haha. It was also cool to meet so many new people and to see some old faces again, maybe we See us again in Milan or Manchester! ;)

  27. Dreykopff says:

All right, informal report on my personal experience is up (External). If only we didn’t have this perfectionist system for a game that has no place for perfectionism…

Congrats to the winners and everyone else on the good side of things.

  28. FamousDeaf says:

An unbelievable run by Yoshi, it was perfect run. I played with Feis and Lajo in NBM, they are very good qualify players and congrats to them for made to topcut! I can’t wait for team reports in German national! :D

  29. Necrocat219 says:

Congrats to the players there, 16-0 is something! Congrats on the decent CP whiteafro, getting a bye and only needing top 8 takes some heat off

  30. NinjaSyao says:

Read this and have to agree with the whole not being loved thing: everyone was saying it and you could really feel that we were more of an afterthought to the organizers. I also remember there being mention of a top 16/32 on the website and it being put as 8/16 on the information card on the wall. Was scratching my head at that one, but guess they just wanted to get it over with faster >.>

Bo3 Swiss would be amazing if they ever implement it as the Hax is a bit too much of a factor in single elimination as many players can attest to. A lot of hax stories were shared this weekend. It would also keep some people from trying to get cheap wins with “gimmick” tactics as those don’t work in Bo3 and they’d have to rely on proper teams and skill to win. I struggled a lot with that as I faced 4 of those people. Hmm, I wonder if just building experience makes those things less effective against me after awhile…

tl;dr Bo3 Swiss would make the tournaments more stable and a Top 32 really is needed. Far too many 6-2 players got shafted this weekend :(
