The first round of the Nugget Bridge Major is now underway. In total 133 players have stepped up to challenge a packed field to become the first Major Champion of Nugget Bridge. There will be 7 rounds of play plus a buy-in round for several players. The first round, including all buy-in matches, will conclude Monday, October 29, 2012 at 9:00 PM Pacific Daylight Time. Any matches not concluded prior to that time will be judged based on activity or a coin flip depending on the activity level of both participants.

Remember the rules for this tournament:

  • Each match will be played in a best of 3 series, and teams cannot be changed between those games. However, teams can be changed after the conclusion of each round.
  • The current GBU ruleset will be used which means Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon White 2 formes and tutors may be used.
  • Matches can be played on either Wi-Fi or Pokemon Online, however if a battling medium cannot be agreed upon, Wi-Fi must be used.
  • If playing Pokemon Black 2 or Pokemon White 2 against a player on Pokemon Black or Pokemon White, a player using formes must announce the forme to the opponent.

Anything not covered here will be handled at the discretion of the NBC Major host, makiri.

Highlight Matches

As with any high-level tournament there are plenty of highlight matches to pay attention to, even in round 1. The round 1 highlights include:

Babbytron vs benjitheGREAT – Both players are fresh off of Regional wins and them meeting so early is a shame but someone has to win. Babbytron has solidified his position as one of the best VGC Juniors ever and benjitheGREAT is a rising star. I expect big things from both players and whoever wins here has a chance to make a huge dent in the tournament.

evan vs Alaka – Alaka has several Regional Championships to his name along with a 2nd place finish at US Nationals in 2010, while evan has placed highly in tournament, just never in the money. This match can go either way as long as Alaka doesn’t bring Emboar, then evan may be in some trouble.

Dubulous vs cakesofspan – Dubulous may not be a big name and is probably the underdog in this match, but after his pretty good 6-2 finish at a tough Regional we can look forward to a real fight here. Cakesofspan is no stranger to tough competition, though, finishing in the Top 16 at last year’s US Nationals, experience that should come in handy in the best of 3 format.

Nickscor vs Dozz – Both players Top Cut US Nationals (yes, the Brit Top Cut) last year so they should be primed for a good series. Nickscor has a Regional Championship and the aforementioned Top Cut, but Dozz may have more best of 3 experience by virtue of his Worlds appearance in 2011.

Darkpenguin67 vs JiveTime/TheBattleRoom – Darkpenguin is listed here by virtue of his dominating performance in the Nugget Bridge Circuit — he already has three live tournament wins and is fresh off a Regionals victory. The only question here is: Can he be stopped? Both JiveTime and TheBattleRoom have their work cut out for them, and if JiveTime manages to win his buy-in we could have a match against a pair of Regional Champions.

Unreality vs DrFidget – Unreality had an excellent first year in Masters that culminated with a Top Cut at US Nationals, and DrFidget just Top Cut a tough Regional at Ft. Wayne. Unreality may have the more storied career, including a Regional Championship and Worlds appearance, but he has his work cut out for him. DrFidget is more than capable of the upset here.
