This Friday night, the United States of America will play off against Japan in the final International Friendly between the two countries before the release of Pokémon X and Y. The only International Friendly between these two heavyweights was using the VGC ’10 format at the end of 2012. This week’s matches will showcase some of the best players playing in the current format — set to have its final events just a few weeks later at the Fall Regional Championships. The entire battle will be streamed on our Twitch channel for spectators to watch beginning at 6:00 PM Pacific / 9:00 PM Eastern on Friday, September 27th, 2013. This is 1:00 AM UTC and 10:00 AM in Tokyo on September 28th.

Yet again I have to satisfy with a twitch archive. I wish I could watch the latter half after I wake up but I’ll be busy in the morning, sigh.

Best of luck to both teams! :)

Didn’t see Scott’s name on the roster, so I presume he’s commentating again, which is a good thing.  Kinda curious about who else might be on the mic.

Gotta see the viewer numbers when Marriland goes on.  Hopefully he does a good job promoting at least his portion.

  7. 13Yoshi37 says:

sad we were never able to get us vs europe, except for that spanish + zog 0-5 in vgc10  :D

How about Rattled Rage Granbull? If that doesn’t make you happy, then I have some news for you…

  16. PreyingShark says:

I wonder if Marriland realized that Ninetales had the potential to KO the Hydreigon? Pretty amazing match, though.

Archived video links added to article.

  18. bearsfan092 says:

What were viewer numbers looking like when Marriland played?

Also, there seriously needs to be a move time limit.  This is more against team Japan than USA, but this is an exhibition match.  Everyone wants to win, but more mind should be paid towards entertainment.  I got back to my apartment around 3:30 AM eastern, and Huy was still playing.  If Marriland viewer numbers aren’t that great, we forfeited a pretty good opportunity.

Other than that, good show from what I’ve seen/what I’m watching from the VODs.

  19. dingram says:

It seems the twitch trolls were right when they said the USA would lose.

  20. R Inanimate says:

Some pretty great games last night. Was quite well worth the wait to see the final deciding set between Marriland and Yamamoto.

Move/Match time limit is a bit hard to enforce here, I think especially since players in Japan tend to play without one. Fortunately, this issue should be fixed come XY, as we are able to set move/match timers for casual match.

The viewer count for Marriland’s match wasn’t that much more than the viewer count we had for most of the night, I think. A bit difficult to expect a large increase for a match at 1AM Pacific (4AM Eastern).
On the otherhand, the Japanese Stream went from about 300 or so to 1600 with people like Junichi Masuda, and Morimoto tuning in to watch Yamamoto’s match with Marriland. They seemed quite entertained by Marriland’s team antics.

  21. Scott says:

It went way up, actually — it was around 270 at peak for us during I think Cybertrons games and gradually dropped as people took 90 years between rounds, used Minimize, and it got later in the evening, and ended up at a little under 100 before Marriland went on, when it then spiked to like 230 again in spite of being 5 am on the east coast. Thought our viewcount was OK given that we didn’t get times/rosters to publicize it until Thursday night but using the celeb match last instead of first is the wrong way to use that draw (though it was Japan’s choice, there).

Also my throat feels awful today, some day I need to learn I actually need to drink more water when I do this.

  22. I think I got counter teamed pretty hard (whether intentionally or unintentionally). I didn’t want to use this version of the team that was on pokecheck, but the person I was going to get the team from let me down and no one could get the Pokemon in time.

This was setup with more of a Japanese convenience, and not for maximizing western hemisphere viewership. I think that kind of took a toll on US players and commentators. In the future we shouldn’t do multiple matches in the same day, rather try and maximize production value for a few matches a couple days in a row.

  23. GeMiNi says:

Can someone please link me to the match of US Nationals they mention during the Ray Rizzo game? I’d love to watch more of his Dry Skin Jynx play but I can’t find it for the life of me. Tried searching general youtube and nuggetbridge channel for it but got no hits.

  24. araluen7 says:

Are they referring to his game against EnFuego? Because if so, then that’ll be this battle
    External

  25. GeMiNi says:

Thanks! Why did En Fuego win the battle? That makes no sense.

  26. Ray forfeit the match at the end.

  27. DaWoblefet says:

Thanks! Why did En Fuego win the battle? That makes no sense.

Since Ray was already guaranteed a trip to Worlds, there wasn’t any real point in him winning the match at Nationals and bringing EnFuego down when Ray had nothing to lose from losing, so he forfeited to be sportsmanlike.

  28. I would like to point out that it is Gavin (kingofkongs) in that replay. You can see it is the same trainer cart that he used to win the national championships.
