VGC ’10 International Challenge: USA vs. Japan vs. Europe

This tournament happened on sort of short notice so we didn’t get to publicize it quite as much as we’d have liked to, but for those of you who aren’t aware, in the wee hours of Friday morning in the United States there was a friendly competition between the United States, Europe and Japan in the old VGC 2010 metagame over Wi-Fi.

For those of you who weren’t around in 2010, that year’s meta was unique in the history of VGC play, comparable only to the Journey Across America tournament, in that it allowed the usually banned cover legendaries from competition. That’s right, each player could bring Mewtwo, Kyogre, Lugia or any of their pals with one catch: only two of these “Restricted” Pokemon could be played on one team. Of course, since this was in 2010, the tournament was held on Pokémon Heart Gold and Soul Silver versions — sorry Black/White enthusiasts.

Each region selected five players to battle against one member of each opposing team in a single battle. The results are listed below, as well as videos of all but one of the completed matches. All of the matches were pretty exciting and worth a look even if you didn’t play VGC 2010. I would suggest in particular Cybertron and Huy’s matches.
