Introducing the Nugget Bridge Pokémon Damage Calculator

A key part of teambuilding is tweaking your Pokémon’s stat spread so you achieve the optimal stats to survive the right attacks and grab the right knock outs. To do this, players play around with the effort values, natures, and other attributes on their Pokémon in a damage calculator until they reach the desired results. We have many articles written about this subject. The most widely used damage calculator for the past two generation has been Honko’s in-depth implementation. Honko put a lot of time into listening to the wants of our community, but it is designed to handle Smogon’s many custom formats. As a result, it can be more painful to use for those who are only interested in playing the Standard format used in the Pokémon Championship Series.

Today, we’re proud to introduce the Nugget Bridge Pokémon Damage Calculator! It takes the amazing work that Honko — and later gamut —  put in to make the most comprehensive damage calculator available and streamlines it for those interested in the Video Game Championships (VGC). Pokémon default to level 50 and Doubles is selected as the default format as well. Additionally, all sets from Smogon have been removed to declutter the Pokémon selection process. In their place, we’ve inserted the most common stat spread, nature, item, and moves for each Pokémon from Pokémon Showdown to make for quick defaults to calculate for or against. These will be updated on a monthly basis as a result of Tapin’s awesome work.

If you see anything that looks off or have a suggestion, please make a post in our feedback thread.

Note: Where you select Mega Pokémon has changed. If  you select a Pokémon that can mega evolve, a Forme field will appear under Type for you to easily choose the non-Mega or Mega forme so you can see how the same spread works for both formes of the Pokémon.

Firestorm just put v1.0.1 up, with the following changes:

    • FRIEND GUARD.  I’m still not sure why this had so many mentions, but it’s there now.
    • All formes everywhere.  You should see every forme on any Pokemon that can change, pretty much.
    • Each “Common Showdown” set now uses the top four attacks, rather than the top four moves, for each set.  Shouldn’t see too many “(No move)” entries now; just keep in mind that you’ll probably want to be making space for Protect, and your Prankster sets are going to be quite different from what’s currently listed.

As always, please let me know if you see anything fishy or have any ideas on what can be improved.

  2. Latsu7 says:

I’ve been wanting this kinda of calculator ever since the XY season began, given how the Showdown calculator didn’t have the option to automatically set levels to 50, and in fact, I also suggested that on Smogon forums, but I guess it’s difficult to implement into the software.

Either way, I’m very exited from this new calculator and the news for it just made my day.

  3. hiten says:

Thanks for the hard work doing this, really appreciate it!

  4. Lega says:

very, very good job, thanks a lot!

  5. VGC Strategy says:

The only thing I would want is the one vs all and all vs one options, they’re a godsend on the showdown default calculator.

Yeah, this would be amazing if so many VGC sets have been added to the calculator.

  6. Makenzie says:

It’s still an amazing tool. Are the sets what the teambuilder recommends on Showdown or?

  7. Tapin says:

I don’t know what the logic behind the recommended set is on PS!, but the sets filled in here are a composite of the top of the usage stats — that is, we pick the most common spread+nature, the most common item, the four most common attacks, etc.  Since the data is set up to report on each individually, we don’t have any way of saying “this is used with that”, so be careful if there are two extremely common but drastically different ways of running a ‘mon.

  8. Makenzie says:

    Thank you for explaining it.

  9. The Wullz says:

Thank you for making this. No longer using that inefficient Showdown calculator.

  10. megarozz says:

    Wow! This sounds nice!

  11. RevRush says:

This is the best thing and now I don’t have to search high and low for the other calculators! 😀

  12. diegodm26 says:

nice, and thanks for put the level 50 as standart, i forget many times switch the level 100 to the level 50

  13. Monuda85 says:

Thank you for all your hard work. It really has helped me plan out my team a lot easier than ever. If I run into you in Seattle in May, I will definitely give you a token of my gratitude.

  14. Tapin says:

The call for custom sets has been heard loud and clear.  Now: We need a volunteer.

I’ve set up a script to enable a curator to take sets from the VGC 2015 Reports here on the site and get them into the tool; they’re added to a textfile in a very-close-to-Showdown format, and once they’re in, Firestorm just has to push one button (figuratively) to get them on the NB Damage Calculator.

If you’re willing to be that curator, drop me a PM.  Ideally, you should:

    • Understand the PS! format
    • Know your way around a plain-text editor
    • (Optionally) Be familiar enough with git, GitHub, and node.js to be able to check your work and commit changes
  15. Casperf1 says:

Would it be possible to get a little thing saying how many of our available EVs we’ve used up? I think it’d be really convenient.

A lot of the time when trying diverse spreads, I lose count. A little box saying “—/510 EVs used” would be pretty cool.

Otherwise, great job. Much easier to use. Looking forward to custom sets too.

  16. Firestorm says:
    • Carbonific has stepped up to add the sets in since Tapin’s hooks were put into place
    • gamut (who updated the calculator for Gen 6 in the first place) is amazing and fixed Parental Bond after seeing the requests
  17. Melon Vodka says:
Sorry if it was already wrote , but I have not the force to read three pages .

Why are not included legendaries ? It can be useful for battle spot free or anyway for tournaments allowing legendaries pokemon like Enter the Dragon-type .

Anyway you did a very good job. I like it.
  18. st0rm54 says:

I just want to ask how do you calculate if you have a flower gift user? (Sorry noob here)

They are included as far as I can tell, only problem I saw in the past was the lack of Primals but that’s been fixed now.

You mean your ally is a Flower Gift user?  That’s not yet part of the calc.  I’ll add it to the backlog.

Oh yeah, they are included but I meant they have not a set.

This calculator is for the Standard format. If you would like a calculator for other formats, check out http://pokemonshowdown.com/damagecalc

    +1 Attack, +1 Special Defense

This isn’t like Friend Guard which uses a different buff/debuff number so we don’t want to put in 20 different buttons for seldom used abilities.

  23. Nucleose says:

For whatever reason, Draining Kiss isn’t in there? Not hard to make the move but I figure it’s worth noting. Possibly not, but it’s just something I noticed.

  24. Firestorm says:

Tapin and gamut have added some awesome changes:

    • Mega Forme is only defaulted to if a Mega Stone is the most common item
    • Luster Purge, Inferno, Mud Bomb, and Draining Kiss have been added as attacks
    • You can account for Sitrus Berry

      60 SpA Rotom-W Thunderbolt vs. 232 HP / 80 SpD Suicune: 96-114 (47 – 55.8%) — 70.7% chance to 2HKO
      60 SpA Rotom-W Thunderbolt vs. 232 HP / 80 SpD Suicune: 96-114 (47 – 55.8%) — guaranteed 3HKO after Sitrus Berry recovery

  25. What awesome news. Shout out to Tapin and Carbonrific for doing a great job :D

  26. Iggy says:

I’m not sure if it’s been asked before or if it’s already implemented and I’m just oblivious to it but being able to calculate mega kangaskhan damage through a substitute may be useful

It’ll now show you both hits as independent arrays, so you can see the damage range for the second hit.

That is so cool thank you so much :D
