Teams from the 2015 Pokémon World Championships

The World Championships of any season brings out the very best the metagame has to offer. The field sees a mix of standard teams perfected to be the best representation of the meta and anti-meta teams trying to defeat the field. Here are what the 77 players who competed in Day 2 of the 2015 World Championships used.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the research involved. 75 Pokémon including 12 different Mega Pokémon made their appearance in the competition.

About the Author

Gavin has been playing VGC since 2011, with notable finishes including Top 8 at Worlds 2012 and 1st at 2013 US Nationals. He also keeps track of everyone's championship points in a format that isn't horrible to navigate. He will be attending the University of Southern California in the fall.

  1. Happy with all teams across the board. Definitely some favorites in the top 8 :D

  2. ipodcheese says:

Yaaaas Wolfey using that Zard X

  3. fourganger says:

I would love to see more of that misdrevus and ine know what its set was?

No idea, but according to Global Link:

    Most common item: Eviolite (duh)
Most common nature: Bold (by a fairly long way, 83%)
    Most common moves: Will-O-Wisp (95%), Pain Split (63%), Curse (!) (52.%), Power Gem (43%) & Hex (42%)

Lower on the list were Trick Room, Thunder Wave, Skill Swap & Shadow Ball.

  4. SalaMenace says:

I noticed a couple errors in the usage stats. There were 2 mega gengars and a mega blaziken.

  5. fourganger says:

I went by the teams found here, where the only Mega Gengar is on Yuya Tada’s team, and no one used Mega Blaziken.

Please can you let me know what teams they were on, and I’ll update the list accordingly.

  6. Fantom0 says:

All this diversity in positive teams and a large portion of the top 8 use very standard mons (obviously Entei and Volcarona some pretty cool picks though)… What happened guys?

Loving the use of Misdreavus though. I might use it a bit.

Players used the best consistent Pokémon available to become the best players in the world?

Curse you and your logic. The World Championships should always be about using cool and strange things.

I think it was more to do with the fact that after last year’s worlds, where everyone was overprepared for Kangaskhan and no-one brought it, everyone though that no-one would be stupid enough (or in this case smart enough) to bring Kangaskhan to worlds again and ended up underprepared. Bringing Kangaskhan here (as well as others) was either a fantastic metagame call or just indicative of how lopsided the current metagame is right now, and of course I understand that, but it’s still a shame to see so many awesome and original teams just get completely sideswiped by stuff that hasn’t changed in 2 years.

To me, Worlds shows how much the metagame has changed over the year, and this year, it just… hasn’t.

The World Championships is not about “using cool and strange things” it is about winning the title of World Champion. The players at Worlds did not show any effort to impress spectators, because they aren’t supposed to.

7 / 8 of the Top 8 teams were Japanese. The Japanese have been playing this format (or at least an extremely similar one) for a very long time, much longer than most players outside the region. (I’m talking about XY Battle Spot). They’ve had more time to develop their metagame, and in the end, it turns out CHALK happened to be the most consistent team. That is why they brought it (and proved it to be one of the best)

If you look at all the Top 16 teams (and below) they all have a nice match up against standard teams. Clearly there was more involved in winning the World Championships than just team match up and Pokemon Species suage, don’t you think?

  10. Hibiki says:

There’s a seperate thread for this exact topic of discussion, so please stop with the ‘hurr durr CHALK vs other things’.

  11. ceejaybee says:

Where is Linkyoshimario? What did he bring?

  12. LightCore says:

Where is Linkyoshimario? What did he bring?

He didn’t make it to day 2. He went out on day 1. He didn go 7-0 with a Jigglypuff at the Boston Open however.

  13. XacerB8 says:

    Well, that’s Ashton.

James Baek used Mega Gengar and Jamie Miller used Mega Blaziken.

  16. TriplePlayer says:

What happened to guys under Did Not Finish?
Did they have to leave in the middle of the event?

  17. ThunderPunch says:

Either that or they dropped out. Some players dropped out once they couldn’t cut/make day 2.

  18. Hibiki says:

This is only Day 2 teams though.

  19. ThunderPunch says:

    Ah yeah. Forgot.

  20. croobaat says:

This may not be relevant here, but I’m curious, how did the Japanese players have longer access to this Meta? I thought the rules were standard on battle spot worldwide?

  21. This may not be relevant here, but I’m curious, how did the Japanese players have longer access to this Meta? I thought the rules were standard on battle spot worldwide?

They XY battle spot had no kalos region pokedex lock like the VGC format did that season. So who ever played in on battle spot played something similar to what it is now. Minus a few megas of course.

  22. Foxboy9 says:

There’s a seperate thread for this exact topic of discussion, so please stop with the ‘hurr durr CHALK vs other things’.

Whats the topic name? or at least link please if available? Id like to read said topic. Does anyone know anything more about Wolfe’s team besides the 6 pokemon or at least where I can find more info? I mean when your favorite player uses your favorite mega… you get excited lol.

  23. skyburial says:

Do want to see Wolfey’s Zard X team report.  Where is the funding for this?

  24. Nucleose says:

He’s publicly stated that he’s pretty much never writing up a report for his worlds team.

  25. MrEobo says:

Do want to see Wolfey’s Zard X team report.  Where is the funding for this?

The Kickstarter already ended for that.
