5th Generation Breeding: An RNG Guide

So, you want a flawless Pokémon. Chances are it won’t just be standing around somewhere waiting to be RNGed — you’ll have to breed it yourself. 5th Gen Breeding is an incredibly useful RNG technique to master as it allows you to RNG almost anything that you could want. Unless your Pokémon requires a 4th generation exclusive move or cannot be bred, you can obtain it with a 5th Gen egg. These Gen 5 eggs can also give you access to egg moves and Dream World abilities, and you can only obtain both in the same Pokémon this way. Here I will try to do my best to explain the process to you, using screenshots to highlight important areas and label some of the less obvious areas. With enough practice, you’ll be able to RNG every non-legendary in the game.

Prerequisites

  • RNG Reporter
  • Pokémon Black or White
  • Parents with as close to perfect IVs as possible and an Everstone
  • Your DS’s parameters; see the Calibration Guide for how to find this.
  • A Chatot with Chatter and a custom recording (two makes things go faster)
  • Only if you want a shiny egg: Your game’s Trainer ID and Secret ID

Finding a Seed

The first step to RNG in Gen 5 is finding a good seed to RNG with. Depending on the complexity of your RNG, the search might take a little while. You may have to play with the search settings in order to find the spread you are looking for.

  • Open RNG Reporter->”Time Finder” -> “5th Gen Time Finder” -> “Eggs”.
  • Enter the parent’s IVs into the appropriate rows — only the IVs that you want to pass to the offspring are necessary. If you are using a Ditto, put it as the opposite gender of the other parent. If you are breeding a genderless Pokémon with a Ditto then Ditto is the female and the other Pokémon is the male.
  • Tick “International Parents” if the parents are of different nationality, and tick “Ditto Parent” if one of the parents is a Ditto.
  • Enter in the range of IVs you are searching for and the Nature, ability, and gender that you desire. If you want the egg to inherit a Dream World ability, and your female parent has this ability, then check “Dream World Ability On ly.” The offspring will not have a Dream World ability if the father is a Ditto or if the mother does not have the ability.

  • If you want a shiny egg, enter in your game’s Trainer ID and Secret ID and check the “Shiny Only” box. If not, leave it alone.
  • To get more results, it is best to use a parent with the same Nature as the desired offspring. If you have such a parent, have it hold an Everstone before beginning the RNG. Then enter the Nature of that parent beside the word “Everstone.”
  • Press “Generate” and wait. Pick one of the resulting seeds to RNG with.

If you do not get any good results, there are a few things you can do. First you can go to the drop down menu labeled “Month” and check off a few more months to search. You can also switch to the “DS Parameter Set Up” tab and select one or two Keypresses, but this makes the search take significantly longer as well. If none of this works, finding parents with IVs closer to those you desire or a parent with the Nature that you desire can get you results easier.

Now that we have the seed to aim for, it’s time to put it to use! This part is the most difficult and most time consuming. There is a lot of trial and error involved in order to compensate for NPC movements and the uncontrollable Timer0.

Time to RNG

  • Now that you have found your seed, it’s time to put it to use! Start by putting the two parents into the daycare. Remember to equip an Everstone if you used an Everstone Nature to find your seed.
  • Put together a party of 5 Pokémon.  It should contain a Chatot with the move Chatter and a sound recorded to it. A Pokémon with the move Fly and a Pokémon with the ability Flame Body are highly recommended.
  • Run around until the Daycare man has an egg ready for you. Save directly in front of him and shut off your DS.
  • Set your DS clock to the date and time found at the end of your seed. When the DS clock reaches one second before the second of your seed, select the game on the DS main menu. When the screen turns white, hold down any keys listed in the Keypresses column. If you do not have any Keypresses, make sure you do not press any keys until the shooting star for the GameFreak logo. If you did have Keypresses, this is when you can release the keys.
  • Enter the game, making sure to leave the C-Gear off. Pull up the menu as fast as possible to prevent NPC movements.

  • In the main window of the RNG Reporter set the Method to “Breeding(BW)”, or “International” if using parents from games of different languages. Right-click on your seed, select “Copy Seed to Clipboard” and paste the seed in the main window of the RNG Reporter in the “Seed (Hex)” box. Tick the “Roamer Released” box if Tornadus or Thundurus are still flying around, and press “Calculate Initial PIDRNG Frame” to get your seed’s initial frame. Enter in the Everstone Nature again if you are using one and check the “Ditto Parent” box if it applies. Finally, press “Generate”.
  • Back in the Time Finder window under the column “Frame” there should  be a frame number. Subtract the initial frame you got from that number. This will be the approximate number of advances that you need to do. Seeds for Shiny Pokémon generally have a higher number of advancements and take longer to search for.

  • Now it’s time to get to your frame. To complete one advance you will pull up the summary of a Pokémon and switch to Chatot. Each time you hear Chatot’s recording is one advancement, so keep switching back and forth until you have reached the correct number of advances. As you advance, pay attention to the pitches of the Chatot call, and try and match them to the pitches next to each frame: a higher number is a higher pitch. If you think you have correctly matched them, stop after hearing the pitch of the frame before the one you are aiming for. The pitches can also be used to confirm that you hit your seed, so if you are not tone deaf it is advised you use them to make your life easier.
  • Once you think you have reached the desired frame, exit the menu and talk to the Daycare Man as quickly as possible. Go hatch your egg. I suggest biking up and down Skyarrow Bridge because of its enormous length.
  • Once the egg has hatched, find out the IVs of the offspring by visiting the Battle Subway and speaking to the man that tells you the highest IV  (if more than one IV is flawless he tells you every one that is). If the IVs are the ones you aimed for, congratulations! You have hit your time and your Timer0. If not, you probably missed your Timer0 which is, unfortunately, beyond your control. Right-click the seed in the Time Finder window and select “Generate Adjacent Results”. By matching your IVs to an adjacent result, confirm what went wrong and make sure it wasn’t actually your second that was off.
  • Also check the Nature, ability and gender of the Pokémon. Your first attempt will almost never be successful, so look at the surrounding frames (main window of the RNG Reporter) and try to find which frame you did hit (shininess can be a big giveaway). Use this to adjust the amount of advances that you do next attempt. If you were 3 too high do 3 less advances; 3 too low, do 3 more.
  • Repeat steps 4 through 11 until you get your desired result. Enjoy the perfect Pokémon!

First time RNGers may find that it takes several attempts to achieve, but do not give up! If you need any assistance shoot me a PM or ask a question in the RNG Help Thread on our Forums. Good luck!
