2013 Pokémon World Champions Decided

After three years, we finally have a new Pokémon Video Game World Champion in the Masters division. With Ray Rizzo (Ray) missing cut for the first time at a World Championships, the stage was set for a new player to step into his long-worn shoes. In his country’s second finals appearance at a World Championship, Arash Ommati (Mean) finished what Matteo Gini (Matty) started and defeated Ryosuke Kosuge (gebebo) to take home Europe’s first Worlds win. Congratulations to both players as well as everyone who made the Top 8!

  1. [IT] Arash Ommati (Mean)
  2. [JP] Ryosuke Kosuge (gebebo)
  3. [US] Aaron Zheng (Cybertron)

  5. [KR] Sejun Park (antonio6)
  6. [US] Enosh Shachar (Human)
  7. [IT] Luigi Lo Giudice (LProx)
  8. [DE] Matthias Hellmoldt (Tyvyr)

The Seniors Division saw an all-American finals with Hayden McTavish (Enigne) taking the win over Ben Hickey (Darkpenguin67) after qualifying through the Last Chance Qualifier the day before — the first World Champion to do so since Kamran Jahadi (Kamz) two years prior. Great job this weekend Hayden and good work to all of those in the Top 8.

  2. [US] Ben Hickey (Darkpenguin67)

  6. [GB] Mark McQuillan (woopahking123)

  8. [US] Pal Chua (pwny person)

Juniors saw a finals showdown we haven’t seen in three years with a US vs Japan match featuring Brendan Zheng (Babbytron) against Fuko Nakamichi. Brendan was no stranger to the World Championships top cut and decided to graduate from the division in style with a victory. He was the only player from North America in a Top 10 that saw himself, Melisa Akcos (Billasis) of Germany, and all eight of the qualified Japanese players. Fine work by those in the Top 8.

First and Second place finishers have earned an invite and fully paid trip to the 2014 Pokémon World Championships. The champions also win a $3500 scholarship prize with the runner-ups taking home $1500. The Top 8 will also receive various Pokémon merchandise and some Championship Points for the next season. Congratulations to everyone who played in this year’s Pokémon World Championships and we hope to see you during next year’s circuit!

Grats to Italy! Amazing games all around!

  2. Dreykopff says:

I find it funny how they’ve never spoken out Tyvyr’s last name on stream (possibly because of the “hell” in it?) and now it’s butchered to something that contains “Held”, German for “hero”. And our hero he is, finally broken the curse! :D

Pretty one-sided finals in all divisions sadly, but great work by all of them anyways. I particularly liked the Senior winning team from what I’ve seen. It made surprisingly great use of Machamp in the final match, helping Substitutes with Wide Guard and setting up that scary parafusion + damage without Swagger, haha. :D Congratulations to all who performed well this weekend!

Seems like Muffinswine is dead, now Mustardswine’s the new thing, huh…

  3. SoulSurvivor says:

I don’t know what is worse mustardscizor or mustardMamoswine but I got Bingo! Also congratulations to Babbytron, and it would have been cool to see two brothers win worlds in different divisions but also congratulations to Mean. Also is that rumor true about Cybertron getting a invitation for next year?

  4. progbass says:

I would like to personally congratulate every winner of every division (great job!) but also Scott and Evan for two reasons.

    1. They were the ones who put together this excellent site to help foster a competitive community for a game that everyone loves. Kudos.

    2. It is pretty cool that Nintendo asked them specifically to do commentary for Worlds, especially considering the site is fairly new. What great recognition for all the hard work they put in here.

  5. Lixiaolong says:

    There goes ray :p

  6. plaid says:

Brendan!!!! Mean!!!!! Enigne!!!!!! KAAAAAAA!!!!! Three strong champions who proved definitively that they’re the best in their division this weekend. I would be scared to face any of them in competition. Our world champs are beyond deserving of the title and I can’t wait to watch them in the next season. Congratulations everyone! I hope as many people as possible make it out to my stomping grounds of DC for worlds next year!

  7. R Inanimate says:

A strong showing by the competitors this year at Worlds. Congrats to Brendan for finally taking home a Worlds title. Congrats to Enigne for managing to boss the Seniors Division with a MACHAMP. Congrats to Mean for becoming the 2nd Masters World Champion since the split of Seniors and Masters, and taking the first VGC Masters World Champion title for Italy, and for Europe.

    SWAGGER IS…. UNIVERSAL…. LANGUAGE!!!

  8. Babbytron says:

For those who didn’t see, I uploaded the first game of my finals. The battle is 81-97441-25764.

  9. xicious says:

    Let the Zheng dynasty begin!

  10. Baz Anderson says:

And just one spot from being on that list, I ended 9th. I’m thinking about doing an article about my season/Nationals/Worlds teams, etc. while I’m still pretty enthusiastic about this.

  11. Scott says:

It would be great if you did!

To expand a little, it’d be cool to get as many teams as possible from Worlds on-site regardless of where people finished, since making Worlds is a feat in itself, and with this being the last Worlds of a generation it’d be cool to look back on later. Of course, those of you with a winning record would be particularly interesting to see the teams of, since being the more successful teams of the last Worlds of gen 5 is a big deal.

If anyone who isn’t a native English speaker is interested in doing a report on their team but isn’t super comfortable with the language thing, I’m plenty willing to help clean things up after you’re done. Season is over, time for those of you who made it to get to show off a little!

  12. MrFox says:

I am just happy that Mamoswine won worlds.

Even if it is puke green.

  13. Scott says:

    It’s like a lemon with tusks -_____-

Mean, you’re so good at Pokemon but so bad at style……………

  14. Xim74 says:

I really could care less what color it was. I’m actually glad to see that a Mamoswine took it home. It’s as people said, it was the ideal genie counter. On top of that, it’s just an all-out powerhouse when it wants to be. Congrats to Arash for piloting that Pokémon in all the right ways and being Europe’s first World Champion

I regret the Seniors match being the only one I was unable to watch since I went out to lunch with my girlfriend, but I heard a lot of good things, especially about a Machamp. If I could find a video that would allow me to view that match, I would watch it in a heartbeat. Machamp can definitely turn a head or two, especially in this competition

I also want to take the time to congratulate Brendan on his first World Championship victory. He played quite well and knew just how to keep his composure. He made the Zheng dynasty proud

  15. josetron says:

    Congrats Babbytronnnn !!!!!!!!!

  16. Cybertron says:

Congrats to everyone!!! Arash is one cool guy and I couldn’t have asked for a better Masters champion after meeting him for the first time this weekend. Top 8 was really diverse in terms of country representation and I was really happy to see that. Good work to Hayden as well, continuing the trend of being the underdog to win the seniors title.

    yay babbytron

In his country’s second appearance at a World Championships, Arash Ommati (http://nuggetbridge.com/forums/user/539-mean/) finished what Matteo Gini (http://nuggetbridge.com/author/matty/) started.

I’m not sure what this means since i had been to worlds for the first time this year and my country sent 6 players to worlds overall.
Maybe you wanted to say “in his country second appearance in a World Final”, maybe i’m just failing because of my language skills.

Haha, i know how awful is green mamo.. the reason why i picked it was a story in itself.
In my team+warstory article i’ll also explain that =)
