49Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire Move Tutors for Kalos Pokémon
On November 21st, 2014, Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire will be released. Though we won’t be using the games themselves for competitive play until January 1st of the new year, we will see the effects immediately at Premier Challenges across the world due to the move tutors that they will introduce. Your Kalos-born Pokémon can be transferred to the new game, taught the appropriate moves, then traded back and still stay within the rules and regulations we are using until December 31st. The move tutors making their return are those we’ve already seen in past games. This means that any of the attacks that Pokémon could learn via move tutors in HeartGold & SoulSilver can be used again. Big thanks to Bond697, Slashmolder, Kaphotics, and SciresM for the data!
I bolded/italicized some of the more interesting moves, though I reached a little for a lot of them. Most of the tutors listed here won’t be very relevant because most of the Kalos group isn’t very good, but some of them at least make niche Pokemon more interesting.
Some things that will be relevant for the ORAS tutor-influenced XY metagame until January:
Sylveon getting Hyper Voice, somewhat obviously, is the biggest change here, as it goes from nearly irrelevant to one of the best Pokemon in the format. Helping Hand on Aromatisse and Florges is pretty cool. It’s a shame they didn’t have them all year, because I think they would have been pretty good Pokemon with it. Aurorus and Heliolisk both get some help with Hyper Voice. While they’re always probably going to be kinda badstuffs attackers, they’re a lot more viable to try to win a tournament with than some of the other Pokemon I see people use. Synthesis on Gourgiest is kind of cool, though it still doesn’t do very much.
Other than Sylveon, the biggest gains are mostly in non-Kalos Pokemon getting their old moves back. Like Sylveon, Mega Gardevoir becoimes relevant with Hyper Voice, though I still don’t think it’s a top tier Mega. Knock Off is really good in XY and on a decent number of Pokemon. Scizor had more problems than just missing Bug Bite, but at least it gets that back. Tyranitar regains good Fighting coverage if it can make room for it, which would have been nice during Kangaskhan’s heyday. I think the most important change for old Pokemon is probably Tailwind coming back on a bunch of Pokemon. I have made this comment to a couple people before, but I think Ryosuke’s team would have been the best plan at Worlds if it wasn’t unfortunately undone by having to use Aerodactyl for Tailwind with Charizard on his team in the original VGC 2014 format. The Tailwind tutor in particular is pretty interesting to me as it allows players to get around some of the strategic shortcomings of teambuilding in VGC 2014.
Pretty cool that we’ll get to play a slightly modified VGC 2014 format, I’m quite excited to try out some of these tutors. Gothitelle getting access to Helping Hand again will make it even more viable for sure…
Meowstic; so good it gets everything twice
Heat Wave and Tailwind on Zapdos… Lol.
Two things:
1) The formatting for Noivern isn’t separated from Avalugg
2) Low Kick on Greninja is actually somewhat significant:
156+ Atk Life Orb Protean Greninja Low Kick (100 BP) vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Mega Kangaskhan: 182-218 (100.5 – 120.4%) — guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Protean Greninja Low Kick (100 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Mega Kangaskhan: 198-237 (93.3 – 111.7%) — 62.5% chance to OHKO
Although less significant now that it seems most people are moving away from Mega Kangaskhan
I am a bit surprised too see that ORAS movetutors be legacl for the final 2014 Premier Challenges, but i like it. Will be a nice mini format with limited time for things to settle, looking forward too seethe difference between this and the VGC ’14 format.
Icy wind! Helping hands pretty cool too. Should bring a little defensive stability to the meta. Heat wave Pyroar stood out to me till I realized Pyroar only saw use thanks to the lack of fire types. Pretty hype stuff still.
Really love Chesnaught’s additions, Super Fang and Drain Punch is so cool.
As well as Greninja getting Low Kick as already mentions, another gain is Gunk Shot. It’s already seen high usage in OU to deal with multiple fairy type switch ins so I wonder if that’ll translate over to VGC
It was communicated to tournament organizers by Chris that this would be how it goes for the rest of the year with 99% certainty (as always, rules are subject to change). Please discuss the format and not whether or not the information is true.
Helping Hand Florges is interesting, but I don’t see anything too significant as far as making something a lot more relevant. But Pokemon from prior gens will see some nice changes, like Heat Wave Zapdos. I have a PC literally the day after ORAS comes out so I won’t get to use these immediately, but I’ll be interested to see if things like mega Gardy spike in usage at all.
Has showdown been updated to let us use these moves in VGC? I hope they will eventually, or else people won’t be able to practice properly.
(Not that I care, I’m not going to an event until January ^.^)
Thanks for the article, it’s nice to see what the Kalos mons are getting.
Icy Wind on Greninja seems interesting. I wonder if we’ll see a lot of it next season?
And I really want to make bulky Follow Me Furfrou work.
There’s probably some sort of silly gimmicks you can create with the brief return of tutor moves for a month before the shift to the new ruleset.
It will be sort of interesting to see what sort of things come up next month. Provided that it isn’t just going to be “Yelling Match: The Game” featuring Heat Wave/Tailwind Zapdos.
I don’t know if it’s gonna have any relevance but Pangoro gets a lot of cool tools to it’s previously shallow movepool
Iron First Drain Punch is really cool and having a strong stab knock off and super power as well as helping hand Is never a bad thing
I’m sorry but this was kinda funny, lol
So it seems to me that florges will be a great supporter, being a special wall and all. Of course, it will get countered by tons and especially physicals, but she can surely be of better use than vaporeon for example
How do I get the tutors right now ?
You can’t. These are tutors from ORAS, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
ur going to the on in alpharetta too. I live ike 10 mins away from there
I really hope each move at the Tutors is unlimited, or in the least require something such as a Heart Scale to learn a move each time. The one time use kinda takes away from trying different things.
They’ll definitely be unlimited as long as you have enough shards or BP, like every other game since Platinum.
Looking forward to finally being able to use my Pixelate Sylveon that I bred a year ago but quickly realized that there wasn’t much I could do with it.
Hyper Voice should make Aurorus even funner to use. I don’t really think it’s suited for higher-level tournaments, but when screwing around it’s pretty fun. This just adds to the fun.
Some mons like Pangoro and Diggersby have more options now, which is nice. Some fundamental flaws aren’t fixed, but at least they have more options.
There’s also some things I find amusing like Magnet Rise Aegislash.
Overall I like these tutors, though the only major thing here IMO is Hyper Voice Sylveon, as already mentioned. The rush that has to happen if somebody wants Hyper Voice Sylveon, or just a move tutor move in general, for a Nov 22nd PC probably won’t be that fun, though. It depends on where the move tutors are I guess.
I hate to ruin everybody’s excitement but the new moves pokemon gain via tutor won’t be able to be transferred back to x and y due to compatibity issues. Serebii made a page on this- http://www.serebii.net/omegarubyalphasapphire/compatibility.shtml
It’s referring to attacks in ORAS that aren’t in XY, like precipice blades and dragon ascent.
It wouldn’t hurt to actually read the links you are referring other people to.
If tutor moves are usable, I assume that new level up moves (like Crunch Gyarados) would be usable as well. Are there any cool new level up moves that anyone knows about?
I’m currently crafting the rules document, don’t expect a new version to be live though until closer to the Pokémon Omega Ruby, Pokémon Alpha Sapphire release. Until the rule document is officially released, consider the below an unofficial stance but highly likely. Also don’t expect Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire rules to be released until sometime between November 21st and January 1st.
Covering the interim period (November 21 – January 1st when Pokémon X and Pokémon Y will still be used), what I’ll be crafting so that Premier Challenges can continue to operate without adding tedium to rule enforcement for organizers and players:
Also, please take note of information effecting the PGL once Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire release.
