Teams from the VGC ’14 Brisbane & Sydney Regionals

Greetings again from the land of Australia. We had our biggest event for Pokémon in the country over the weekend at the Sydney Regionals with 219 people (167 Masters, 47 Seniors and 11 Juniors) attending to battle it out to see who was the best. Brisbane did well also with 166 people (128 Masters, 24 Seniors and 14 Juniors) participating. Below we have the teams for the two Regional events. Unfortunately, I was only able to get a small number of teams from Sydney (the downside of living in another state). Without further ado, here are the teams.

  1. Legacy says:

3 megas??? Does the person know that you can only mega evolve one pokemon during a match?

  2. El Tigre says:

Wow…in Sydney Golduck, Furfrou, Barbaracle, Scolipede, and Quilladin were used!

  3. blutrane says:

    shell smash Barbaracle FTW

  4. Bopper says:

The Juniors’ teams were more impressive than a lot of the masters’ teams…

  5. TwiddleDee says:

Wow! The unique teams in Australia is amazing…. Can I… please be a part of their meta?

And it’s weird that me and Goomy’s teams are only one mon off from each other (same mega and everything), even though we’ve never discussed our teams .-.

  6. Snormax Miltank says:

I see Wade has love for that Vanilla Charizard though

  7. LLeonard says:

Now i also want to use Quilladin!

  8. Xenoblade Hero says:

Thoroughly convinced that both GiraGoomy and ZzamanN were both in the Master’s Division by the way they’ve talked and contributed on both Nugget Bridge and Showdown. I can easily see them being top contenders for a Senior’s World placement at Nationals

  9. Cache says:

Finally, after 17 seasons, Ash Ketchup won a Regional. That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for Pokemon. Congratulations!

Now seriously, congrats to the winners. A lot of rare stuff out there: Alomomola, Golduck, and a Trick Room team in the 1st place on Brisbane, pretty cool. But I think it’s far from what we can expect in the next tournaments.

  10. Sprocket says:

Furfrou is evil as all get out if it can set up two Cotton Guards. I battled someone on the international challenge with this set:

    Furfrou @ Rocky Helmet
    -Headbutt
    -Cotton Guard
    -???
    -Rest

  11. ZzamanN says:

Yeah i do really like those juniors teams but Will (the guy who came second in juniors) was using my IV bred. EV trained battle ready kangaskhan which basically carried him to the finals xD

  12. ZzamanN says:

Also arent you linking peoples NuggetBridge username to their team they used?

  13. GiraGoomy says:

Really interesting teams. Congrats Giragoomy for winning seniors. No surprise there.

Haha it was actually really hard.

  14. ZzamanN says:

thanks Xeno ;) ill let you know how it goes

  15. Javi says:

Oh someone else using Granbull too, now I feel good Im not the only one using him. Btw interesting teams and congrats to the winners!

  16. sebs92 says:

Now I’m curious about than Quilladin…

  17. CatGonk says:

It’s no surprise that Mega Kangaskhan is the most popular mega in Australia, probably for the same reason Raikou is popular in Korea.

What struck me as odd on both days was how common Ferrothorn was. It was also something people in Perth kept talking about. I saw more Ferrothorn than Salamence.

Since Melbourne will be a bigger event it should give a better idea of what the Australian meta will really look like, but then again there are still differences from state to state. Most people in Perth would have played standard goodstuff teams (reflected by the winners) since we handed out like 15 of them prior to the event, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Melbourne still has the rain boner from last year (especially now that rain is actually good).

  18. Azazel says:

Never thought I would see the day where a trick room team came in first, at least in gen six. Gen six is so offensively potent and full of powerful speedsters that I see more relatively skilled players taking the ‘balanced offense’ or ‘tempo’ approach. No dis to the players out there, but a TR team taking first shows just how creative/unoriginal the meta in Aus is.

  19. Azazel says:

    Edit:
    Creative/original*

  20. The WaywardDelibird says:

Oh, my sweet Jesus. The anti-meta noob in me smiled just a bit:)

Two Chandelures, a Gourgeist and Rhyperior, and a WINNING TR team in Brisbane? And the Mega Gardevoir<3 In the short time that I've been a part of the Competitive community(barely), even I know that's outrageous! Don't even get me started on Sydney, with the Golduck and basically all of Alaka's and Eric's and Wade's team!!

Congratulations to everyone who won! It looks like the competition was very diverse and challenging, so kudos!

  21. sohaib says:

Wow I can’t believe I defeated gira , I should have been in that tourney :)

  22. Dogemon says:

Still pissed about getting 5th in sydney because of a bloody qualifier match….

  23. Rusty says:

Just want to thank Boomguy and ZzamanN for the help in getting the team information for everyone. I forgot to add it in the description in my rush to post the news. Future Pokemon Aus champs right tbere!!

  24. Rusty says:

Sorry.. i needed to get some work done on my legs.. anyway. I did the ones that when I searched on Nuggetbridge has associated accounts. Some didn’t have any, and therefore were removed as I found it terribly misleading. If they join, they can always comment with where they placed/their team.

  25. Dreykopff says:

Well, External claims RHYHORN was used as well. RIP Rhydon, I guess.

  26. GiraGoomy says:

Well, External claims RHYHORN was used as well. RIP Rhydon, I guess.

Rhyhorn 2 OP. Needs a nerf desperately.

  27. IceKingz says:

Man, I’ve actually used all 6 of Ash’s team in practice really early on and was barely able to win a single match!  I’m curious to know how he pulled off that Hail Room team.  I love the idea in theory but practice was so rough =/

  28. Rusty says:

That’s strange I went through all the data I collected today and there’s no Rhyhorn mention. O.o

  29. albus says:

Wow, a lot of interesting team and unique pokemon choices..

  30. Crunchy says:

I’m really curious about that Quilladin.
