2013 Global Showdown and Pokémon Global Link Transition to X & Y

We’d like to remind everyone that the final WiFi tournament of the 5th Generation, the 2013 Global Showdown, has registration open for just another day or so. It doesn’t count for Championship Points and will be following an alternate format so it should be a relaxing way of finishing off the generation in a low pressure tournament! Even if you aren’t too interested, we recommend playing in the five necessary games to qualify for the rankings so you can participate in the first ever Pokémon X & Y WiFi tournament. Definitely the most interesting participation prize given out so far in these events.

Additionally, the Pokémon Global Link for the 5th Generation games will be completely shut down on January 14th, 2014. From October 1st to October 12th, 2013, it will be in extended maintenance. Between those points they will be slowly shutting down services as they transfer to supporting the 6th Generation exclusively. Make sure that you’ve done everything you need with your 5th Generation game cards to transition over yourself!

Check out the official pages for the 2013 Global Showdown and Pokémon Global Link transition for more information.

Definatly need to get all the DW Females that I can get from Dream World from 5th Gen, place them all in Entree Forest just to look at, lol. Oh and as many Males and Genderless Pokemon as possible aswell as DW Exclusive Moves like Spinda with Superpower and Lotad with Water Pulse (Lotad cannot have Own Tempo and Water Pulse on the same set normally).

  2. Feis says:

But i can still battle on the in-game GBU after January 14, 2014, right?

  3. Firestorm says:

Only Unrated Battles, not Rated if I read it correctly. For rated battles you’ll need to be using X or Y.

I don’t even remember which non VGC pokemon I have anymore.  I don’t think I’ve even ported them to Gen 5.  From what I’ve read, this is going to be significantly different than Smogon Ubers because there won’t be any sleep clause, there will be an item clause, and it’s look at 6/pick 3.  Does anyone know what kind of thing might work well?  I have literally 0 experience with singles.

/me boots his HG/SS for the first time since ’10 probably

There is no item clause mentinoned in the link, but its restricted, so I wonder if item clause is involved.
Anyways, there will be Kyogre with Water spout, Deoxys with psycho boost, a lot Scarfers and Arceus with Swords dance+Extreemespeed. It´s tough to counter Ubers with non-Ubers, but I think Terrakion with focus sash and an imposter Ditto will work well (Ditto will copy boosts, too- and there will be quite some boosters in singles).
You should also take care of FEAR Pokemon who try to endeavor+quick attack you, so a ghost in your party is recommended. However, the level of all Pokemon will be 50, so you don´t have to fear Aron^^

Actually, there is an item clause and it is listed under the full rules in the PDF.  It was the only place I could find it, but it was there.
Image from said PDF listed below, but rather large so in hide tags to not stretch the thread.

    got DC’d by a 908 from Japan

    never seen a 908 before

    wow

  8. pball0010 says:

About a 1 in 5 ratio, which would be around 80%, but I think people have been DQ’d with more or less…

  9. Thowra says:

Oh wow it’s already started o.O

aaaand I just realised my battle box is the team I used in the June challenge. Oops. Yeah, rage powder volcarona really works in singles…

Think I’ma just fight five battles and then quit. Man, I had a sun team consisting of Groudon, but forgot to register it >.<

  10. Scott says:

Played my 5 games with the powerful team of Liepard/Thundurus-I/Shedinja/Ferrothorn/Breloom/Ludicolo.

Liepard slew two Kyurem, two Reshiram, and a Mewtwo with Swagger/Foul Play, I was a turn away from beating a 3 Uber team that could all hit Shedinja with Thundurus/Liepard because of Swagger, and Shedinja swept two opponents to bring me to a respectable 2-3 with all the losses being 1-0s. I also faced a Substitute Chandelure which I encored and then started spamming Fake Out on because he didn’t switch and I wanted him to figure out that wasn’t very smart. I consider this tournament a success.

  11. PreyingShark says:

Those were 5 very fun matches. I was laughing most of the time.

Used Arcanine/Haxorus/Krookodile/Cobalion/Milotic/Archeops. Didn’t notice that Cobalion lacked an item until it was too late and I forgot to make sure that I was using the right Milotic. I was using Scarf Krookodile (with Intimidate :P) because I was too lazy to reteach my Mienshao High Jump Kick. I put no real thought into this team and was expecting to go 0-5.

Went 3-2. Both losses were 0-1 and in hindsight I could’ve won those two matches if I was competent.

    I’m satisfied. :D

  12. FroZen85 says:

Didn’t reach my usual 100 battles. Just finished number 70 and with a 1711 calling it quits.

Was great fun seeing Toxicroak destroy so many ubers! I mainly led with him, fake out then fighting gem low kick. Gave him just enough ev’s to survive a specs Kyogre thunder, threw the rest in attack and let him run a mock! Haven’t kept a perfect tally but what I’ve got just shows how strong Ubercroak is. Sooo 12 Kyogre, 2 Groudon, 4 Extreme killer Arceus, 2 Giratina, 1 Dialga, 2 Mewtwo, 1 Jirachi (at minimal health though. These things are awesome by the way. Looking for a trade or event asap.)

    Edit: And 3 Kyurem lol

The only others that I put thought into were my Zekrom which was sassy no speed haban, just to beat any dragon 1 on 1 because he is the best dragon, which really helped alot.

And my favourite Arceus Dark. I’ve had this set for ages and finally got chance to use it, so bulky with will-o-wisp and calm mind.

I’m a little gutted I didn’t put the other 3 to better use. Air balloon Reshiram came in handy in a couple of matches but the ev’s weren’t optimal.Trick room Victini, with max speed for some reason, only got used a few times and I think I only won 1 game with T/R so bad choice. And finally was scarf Darkrai which I barely used but when I did made some clutch plays. Surviving with 1hp in 2 seperate matches to come back in late game and clear up, so yeah good stuff.

I think with better planning I would have had an answer for all those strong non-uber teams floatinf about. Nido’s sableye ruined my whole squad, I had no reply it was embarrasing  :P Porygon 2 is a beast!! Scarf Terrakion is Uber! Oh and got to watch out for those moxie Salamence. All calculations go out of the window when that thing gets a boost!

All in all I think it was a fun tour, for ubers. I must admit it can be a little square. There’s just so much more that can be done with this game and that’s why were all fans of the VGC matagame I suppose.

X and Y will definitely be fun if they have an unrestricted random match up mode…Uber doubles anyone?

  13. I essentially played with a 5 Pokemon roster but External was worth it. Got to 1750ish then dropped and bounced around 1700. Finally climbed back to 1760ish but there were quite a few connection errors and a handful of ragequits against me late so I would not be surprised to be DQ’d.

Scarf Mewtwo was very good but I wish I put Shadow Ball over Trick. Ferrothorn seemed like dead weight at times since I didn’t see as many Kyogre as I expected. Swords Dance on Groudon was also a waste and I could’ve used an extra coverage move. Palkia is awesome, especially when External.

  14. Amarillo says:

I ended with a 1900 even. Not sure why I decided to take this tournament seriously, but I hope that my rating is good enough for top 10.

Oh and Little Green Yoda, I got destroyed by that team. It was so pro my team couldn’t handle it.

  15. Lati says:

Finished 2 days earlier at 1616 with the team of Smeargle/Victini/Ditto/Giratina-O/Ferrothorn/Arceus-Fighting.

The basic idea was to have some SmashPass-action with random trolls by Moody thrown in to have some fun. I´d usually pass that to Giratina that was EV´d to outspeed timid scarf Latios (the fastest thing I expected except for Deoxys-S that would go down to one Shadow Sneak anyways) and sweep the opponent. The other ones basically were added for synergy and countering what I expected to be popular. (I used to have Lv.1 Nosepass with Magic Coat to counter specific trolls but the rules prevented it from happening… Since I realized that my team would be swept by most faster dragons, I replaced it with Ditto as a revenge killer for those.)

While Smeargle was a key part of this team, it was also the reason for its downfall: Moody ruined quite a bunch of games for me, dropping Speed, Attack stats (I could compensate for this by just baton passing to a special attacker or attacker in most cases) and, most annoyingly, Accuracy at bad times which led to me having to baton pass those and rely on luck to sweep sometimes. Still, I wanted to have a more casual approach on the tournament so the hilarity of seeing an enemy struggle against a +x Evasion Pokemon outweighed the usefulness for me.
Moody also was kind of a blessing, though. I would sometimes get some lucky defense or special defense rises which would then help my Arceus-Fighting set up on even more stuff which was quite nice. Not only that but it could also cause a lot of problems to an opposing team with the usual Shell Smash passed to it.
Speaking of gambles, Ditto was also one: It heavily relied on me getting a good Pokemon for a sweep and often had to switch out on a bad matchup (like, Ditto as Kyurem-W locked into Draco Meteor against Ferrothorn) and switch out, only to then having to copy Ferrothorn and instantly losing because of the Scarf and unability to stall it out. Ditto took a lot more skill to play than I initially thought and I got burned for using it without having a solid game plan due to lack of knowledge sometimes.
Not only that but lack of knowledge of the GBU singles meta and unaware of some move choices on certain Pokemon, I ran into some SmashPass or Sleep Clause Paranoia choices like Sleep Talk Ho-Oh, taunt Terrakion or Mewtwo and random priority users or random lum berries.

Other than that, the team worked quite well. Especially Fighting-type Arceus and Ferrothorn did a lot of work: Arceus-Fighting was able to set up on many opponents easily due to its amazing bulk and could then hit pretty much anything on the opponents team with solid Fighting/Ice coverage. I took games with it alone sometimes.
Ferrothorn could stall out pretty much anything lacking a Fire-type move with the combination of bulk, Protect and Leech Seed. If I knew how to play it against my opponent´s team (taking care of its counters), it could stall out the rest of the team easily. It didn´t appreciate the unusually high amount of Sheer Cold Kyogre I faced, though…
Victini was useful against worse teams and later on against certain leads but other than that, didn´t see much usage. I liked using one, though.^^

All in all, my team is probably too luck-based to be able to make a deep run but it was incredibly fun to use. Even though some moments there made me rage a bit (moody trolling me, random OHKO moves, Brightpowder anything), I still enjoyed the tournament a lot and am happy to have done more than just 5 matches.^^

Fun fact: Unlike what most people claimed, I have seen literally no DCs. I did end up with 3, though: One by a japanese player during sending the results (the match was counted so I doubt that it counts as a DC, though), the other by our good friend LUVIER who has made himself a name with his unusually unstable connection while losing (it doesn´t surprise me that he has to do that to get his usually high rankings, though… Anybody who just spams Sleep Talk on a Smeargle to give me a free setup deserved the sweep without my Pokemon losing any HP) and another japanese player after he lost. Still, 2 DCs and the low score should secure my spot in the final rankings so I´m also quite happy that I don´t have to lose out on the prize for playing more than 5 matches in the tournament.^^

  16. Didn’t get much playing done in this one due to work, but the ~10 games I got were hilarious. Nice change of pace from the usual super serious doubles mode and I got to use some stuff that was picking up dust in the PC (not to mention the complete lack of DCs was nice). Threw together a team of Scarf-Jirachi/MixQuaza/RestChesto-Kyogre/Transform-Mew/Lugia/Shaymin for a laugh.

Scarf Jirachi for MVP of the world.

  17. pball0010 says:

Well, I actually wanted to try this tournament on a somewhat casual level, but with work on Thursday through Saturday nights, my family over for a party Friday afternoon party and a Saturday afternoon reunion, I was pretty much limited to a 2-day grind for a little over 1600 at about 35 or so matches. A decent run, and contrary to normal wifi activity, I didn’t receive too many disconnects on the last day.

In case you were interested at all, here’s the team I used over the two days:

Saw this VOD on FB last night (I think?). It still didn’t cease to amaze me.

Haha, awesome. One of the cooler gimmicks I fell victim to over the weekend was CounterSash Zoroark. Looks like CoatSash performs just as well.

  20. Lajo says:

Ended the Tournament with a final ranking of 1679 points in 32 matches, which is not so bad considering I had not perfect flawless Ubers.
To still provide some speed control, I used Thundurus-I/Arceus/Giratina(without Orb)/Genesect(Scarf)/Terrakion/Ditto

Thundurus was MVP and so strong, bringing in subs and paralyse my foes so that I can get the advantage with my Arceus and sweep.
Still, I had some weird moments against Roar Groudon or Mewtwo OHKOs after eating a lum.

Genesect was a bit disappointing, didn´t napping the OHKO on Mewtwo is huge and I won´t use Scarfsect another time, since you can counter it pretty easily. Terra destroyed some cores like Dialga-Ho-oH just by itself and even OHKOt some Groudons after one Swords Dance. I think I never used safeguard, though.
And Ditto- yeah, Ditto was great, but I rarely used it because I didn´t come across much Arceus. Here´s one of these few moments with one:

    External
(side-note: pokécheck messed up; I lost in the end because the foe´s Arceus got a crit on mine; and I did not know Destiny Bond lasts longer than one turn lol)

The weirdest battle was against a Gengar, Roserade and Golem:

T1: I start with Thundurus and he starts with Gengar. I set up a sub while he switches to golem.
T2: Hidden power ice puts golem nearly in the red, while Golem goes for rock blast- hits 2 times and brings my Thundy down to the red.
T3: Golem used Sucker punch! Thundy faints…
T4: I bring in Giratina, w-o-w his Golem which Earthquakes for a bit damage.
T5-6 setting up 2 Calm minds while he does a bit damage, Golem goes down
T7: Gengar comes in and puts in a sub. I break it with shadow ball
T8: w-o-w misses, he disables shadow ball
T9: Switch to Genesect from my side, he switches to roserade
T10: since I got a attack boost, HP ice didn´t OHKO, but he reveals HP fire and OHKOs Genesect…
T11: Giratina comes in and is send to sleep.

After 2 more Turns I was in the same situation like T8, and couldn´t touch his Gengar. I was beaten by a Golem.

  21. CFire says:

Battled with a team of Weavile, Ferrothorn, Tyranitar, Chandelure (wasn’t too helpful), Gliscor, and Rotom Wash. Really wasn’t too prepared for most of these Ubers, but I was pleasantly surprised how well Rotom Wash held up against them and how well Ferrothorn was able to tank hits and set up Leech Seed/Stealth Rock.

  22. SoulSurvivor says:

It looks like Sejun won this with 2000+ points too. I used a mono outrage team with genesect netting me a tot of 10 wins and 1 loss.

  23. lancealot says:

Genesect was most definately my MVP. U-turn is what made it so fun to use. OHKOing many Deoxys and Mewtwo. One battle my Genesect had to take out a mewtwo and a Cresselia to win me the match and it KOd both with an attack download boosted U-turn. Special thanks to Dawoblefet for giving me the set.

  24. Amarillo says:

Rankings aren’t out yet are they?

  25. MSK says:

    Rankings are out!!

    I managed 418th ;)

  26. tlyee61 says:

    welp rankings are out

somehow, I managed to get DQed even though I intentionally ran from 6 battles. Guess trainer card DCs do count…

whatever, I just won’t be joining you guys for the XY test comp.

  27. Scott says:

    Sejun is our king

Also I finished 5,790th, get wrecked

  28. PreyingShark says:

Tied with 10+ others for 4149. I got on the rankings so I’m satisfied. :)

  29. Lati says:

    1237th place^^

Nothing to be proud of but seeing the actual number in the standings means that I am allowed to participate in the test competition which was my main goal. I’m happy I made it and that I had a good time with a fun team (for the most part).^^ The lack of DCs (for me, at least) definitely contributed to that and I hope this trend will continue.

Other than that, I’m surprised to see Mewtwo above Arceus in Usage stats… With its versatility, Arceus can fit into any team (literally – you can just give it the type that fits best) and do work with many different sets that are not E-Speed SD thanks to its movepool and stats. Sure, Mewtwo is very versatile and strong, too but the outcome is a little surprising regardless.
