  1. around 2002 or so. I’m at pokemon center NYC.(now nintendo world) and they had this event where you battle an employee and win  a prize if you beat him. we’re playing pokemon gold/silver/crystal. it was a 3v3 battle. his team was ho-oh curse snorlax and ancient power tyranitar. my team was mewtwo with submission, jolteon and rhydon. my team was weird and my rhydon had moves like surf and thunder. after some lucky crits with submission on his beefed up snorlax I ended up winning. I hardly remember what the prize bag had. i remember some pins but it was really cool to win my first link battle. I never got to battle my friends because they never wanted to battle for some reason. and since that day i used to go to pokemon center to play link battles all the time and slowly lead me to competitive battling.

pokemon center nyc forever in my heart <3

i remember when me and my brother first got a link cable in 2000

we were still playing gen2 games back then

  3. BlakDragon says:

Earlist I can remember: it was a Gen III battle with an HS buddy. We both brought our ingame teams, but he had a freshly caught Mewtwo.

It was tough but I managed to pull of a victory due to the experience I had with the game, good match!

  4. Knight says:

My first multiplayer battle was against my older brother. he used Gold while I used Silver. I don’t remember how the battle went, but I’m pretty sure he won, and he continues to win as we had a match every ten levels or so.

  5. TheAllyKat says:

On the Christmas of 1998, my long time rival received their copy of Pokemon Blue. As our bonds formed, it was only a matter of time before a love for Pokemon transferred along to me. In the summer of 1999, I finally secured a GameBoy. The lime green GameBoy color would go smashingly with my copy of Pokemon Red.

Throughout the Grade 11 year, the battling begun. Our first battle pitted my Charizard, Snorlax, Starmie, Gengar, Raichu, and Dragonite against my friend’s. Our first battles were so timid. Before long, the A/C adapters were a requirement for our intense full Level 100 battles. The rest as they say… was history.

  6. Snake says:

In 2006 link cable battling with best friend in ruby vs sapphire to see who’s legendary was stronger. It was rayquaza.

  7. PreyingShark says:

Pokemon Stadium. My rental Pokemon VS bro’s Yellow team.

IIRC he used Mewtwo and I had no chance. I was… 8, I think?

  8. Koke says:

I remember sitting on my best friend’s sofa in 6th grade, hooking up our hi-tech grey Game Boys using a link cable that I had bought just for that purpose. He had Red and I had Blue. I don’t remember what his lead was, but my Blastoise definitely opened with Tail Whip.

  9. SoulSurvivor says:

I remember my uncle giving me stadium and we would play for hours at a time. Of course I was 4 and he was 10. No need to figure out how it went lol

  10. Cassie says:

First multiplayer experience was a bit late–I didn’t battle anyone until DP, and at the time I was a 6th grader who destroyed all the boys with latios.

  11. Dreykopff says:

First I remember was summer 2000, Red/Blue against someone on a class trip. She used an in-game team with 5-ish badges and I used missingno. level 100 Grimer (not: “Grimer”). I think it was one of the shittiest games ever.

First tournament was in May 2004, Colosseum release multi battle city tournament in Hamburg, 200 street style rules. We used double Lati@s double Soul Dew and CB Metagross, all with random IVs, and we won the final match 4-0, thus qualifying for invite-only nats in summer. We were so bad, but the others were even worse, haha.

  12. ultimatedra says:

My earliest memory is from Pokemon Blue, battling my neighbor Andy. My Gyarados smoked him 🙂

  13. Dragonking700 says:

I really only got into Pokemon around the DP era…I battled my sister and friends occasionally, but it took me a few more years to discover the competitive community.

  14. sporeguya says:

I was 10, and had just gotten Pokemon Gold. My friend and I battled as soon as we could, without actually knowing how to play the game too well. I destroyed him though. Pretty sure he didn’t talk to me for a week afterwards.

  15. KnockFan says:

My earliest memory of a multiplayer Pokemon battle has to be one between me and my cousin.  We both had Gen 3 games.  I was using my LeafGreen and I believe my cousin was using either FireRed or Sapphire / Emerald.  I forgot about most of the battle, but I clearly remembered what happened with the last turn.  My cousin and I only had one Pokemon left.  When I used Fly (forgot what Pokemon), I clearly thought I had the game.  However, my cousin’s Blaziken used Sky Uppercut and I got KO’d.  I was pretty much like “That works?!?” In the meanwhile, my cousin cheered on his victory.  Regardless, the battle was just us going back and forth between our Pokemon, but that one last turn is something really memorable and unforgettable.  I believe that’s one of our best time enjoying Pokemon, because we did not care about IVs, EVs, abilities, move choices, and whether or not our favorite Pokemon would be even competitive at all.

  16. I started when heartgold and soulsilver came out, so I havent been playing as long as other people, but I remember having my first multiplayer match, didn’t know anything back then, and used pretty much my ingame team and got a close win.

  17. mattj says:

Linking up our Gameboys with those grey cables in the Middle School lunch room before school with Chad Buschmeyer. I thought my L20 Charmeleon was pretty boss. He led with a L100 Mewtwo. Pretty sure he Gamesharked it.

  18. darkdragon88 says:

I was in grade 2 and my friend and I would link up our gameboys to play Pokemon Red and Blue whenever our moms had activities together. We would go off, find a room, and play for hours while talking about which pokemon was our favourite ones. I lost a bunch of times but I still found it really fun to train and play.

  19. shinryu says:

Earliest? Would be 1999 during some random matches at school.

Most memorable early one would be the one time my friend and I were debating who was better: Clefable (he had Red) or Wigglytuff (I had Blue). We both raised one to the same level and pitted them against each other to settle the score, and my Wigglytuff ended up winning out; how now that I reflect upon it, no clue how I won since Clefable is a lot tougher lol. He was pretty psychic in a way, he foresaw how awesome Starmie was and got me hooked onto it as well as one of my most favorite Gen 1 Pokemon.

  20. pball0010 says:

    Here’s a transcript of a fake match I had in 3rd grade:

“Now its 11:10 And I should tell you about me and everett’s pokémon battle. [next page]

“Everett sends out Koffing and I send out Charizard. koffing did explosion. almost whiped me out charizard was at 1 hp. koffing was knocked out! Everett send out donut! A small little donut! donut did run away. A wimpy attack. Charizard did fire blast! asmashing attack that whiped it out. I won the battle! That was the end of our match! I won…

    To

“I was now 26-0 and everett was 40-1

    “And that was our match.”

  21. Shreyas says:

My first was actually around the time of the Pokemon 10th Anniversary. After I ended up just spectating the entire tournament, I actually got pretty interested in battling other people. I begged my parents to get us the 2 cables that connected my gabeboys to my gamcube, so I can battle my brother for the first time.

  22. Crux says:

Link battling in Pokemon Red with my mum. She won every time.

  23. Bopper says:

2005, Fire Red/Leaf Green battle vs. the one and only BenjitheGREAT. I won, obviously. Benji sucks.

  24. Crow says:

When I was young I never battled with anyone other than the NPCs. My friends and I like catching and trading pokemon; we weren’t worried about battling. When Ruby and Sapphire came out I had gotten bored with pokemon. If it wasn’t for some friends in high school convincing me that Diamond and Pearl were going to be awesome I probably wouldn’t have picked up the game. It was in my freshman gym class, sitting in the corner with our group of five or so people that I have my earliest concrete memories of multiplayer battling. We’d all just use our favorites; things like dusclops, torterra, gyarados, and garchomp were popular choices.

  25. Pendlz says:

My first memory was going up to my friend’s cabin in the late 90’s, and instead of going out on the lake we stayed in all weekend and linked up our Red and Blue versions! We played quite a few games that weekend and I think we were fairly evenly matched. It was so long ago that I can’t even remember my team, but I do know it was a ton of fun.

  26. Nickscor says:

7th Grade, my friend swept my in-game team with a Lv. 100 Pichu in Emerald. Well maybe not swept, but it got some work done due to me being severly outlevelled. My team seemed good at the time – the 3 fully evolved Hoenn starters, Raichu, Salamence, and Mightyena.

  27. Gonzo says:

As soon as I got the link cable I went to my friend and had an epic battle: his entire team against my Dragonite. Eventually dragonite was KO’d by his Blastoise and my Venusaur did the clear up. It was in… 1999 or 2000, can’t recall.

  28. Link battling Emerald with a group of friends. I dont remember much but we kept on disconnecting the link cable to tease each other

  29. Chauzu says:

My earliest memory is from somewhere between 4th and 6th grade, not sure, my memories from this time are faint, but this memory is clear. In our school back then we had set up a system of gym leaders, where I was one of the last ones, if not the last one. I only used grass Pokémon, and I had just done the – to me – bizare thing of training a Ivysaur to level 100. In my first multiplayer game with it, it single-handedly sweeped my opponent, who was a year or two younger with me. The opponent was so shocked with being sweeped by an Ivysaur that he on the spot wiped his whole cartridge. In the end, this is the only game of Pokémon I remember from these years so it did leave me an impact.

  30. Chalkey says:

Did you mean multiplayer as in multi-battle or as in just any non-CPU battle? My earliest memory of a battle with friends was with RBY. I had two friends who lived on my block that were my age, both of which were named Joey – yes, I lived with TWO Youngster Joeys – and the Joeys got Bulbasaur and Charmander. I started late, so naturally I took Squirtle. The boys laughed because they didn’t see how a slow turtle could ever stop their dragon and grass type dragon (it was ten year old logic – most of the pokemon were dragons). When they all fully evolved, we had a battle at level 36, 1v1. I beat Charizard with my Blastoise handily, then managed to still sneak in a win against Venusaur thanks to Ice Beam (and being faster despite being a turtle). It was the best childhood lesson a kid could ever receive; I played with a pokemon I bonded with rather than the one with the natural advantage, and won it out anyway. 😀

My first multi-battle was in 2005, when I met Stess, BSTS, Multi, Stephen, Skarm, and that whole crew. Still rocking Blastoise on my team, I battled alongside Stess against BSTS and Multi while the three of them explained to me what EV training was. I went home and knocked the socks off my friends in a local EB Games tournament a few months later, once again with Blastoise!

This little guy has seen a lot in his day, and remains on all my in-game teams (and three of my VGC teams last year).
