What is your earliest memory of a multiplayer Pokemon battle?”

My cousin introduced me to Pokémon when he came over to my house one day playing Red in Fall 1998. I spent hours watching him beat up Diglett and Dugtrio in Diglett’s Cave with his overleveled Venusaur’s Razor Leaf. A critical hit! It’s super-effective! It looked fun as heck, soon I would get my own copy of Blue to complement his copy of Red and eventually we would link battle. Sadly I lost, both because of Venusaur’s type advantage on Blastoise and he was higher-leveled having started playing sooner, but it motivated me to train a Beedrill to win the next time around and now it’s been a part of my life for over half of it now. :X

  2. Fufadaffodil says:

met one girl in the playground who loved pokemon just as me, I stopped playing for 3 years, we met again in highschool, still loving pokemon, so we started battling to see who’s the better trainer.
    Now that rival is my girlfriend ^^;
….who still manages to destroy me everytime we battle… >,>

  3. seasicknesss says:

My charizard took dumps on my brothers venasaur like it was no ones business.

Here’s the pro set if anyone’s having issues checking venasaur

    Charizard @ XXXXXX
    fire blast
    flamethrower
    fly
    strength

2007- My mate had a N64 and a copy of Pokemon Stadium. We were pretty evenly matched in terms of skill for a long time but eventually I recognized a pattern in his team building, I soon started to win every single time we played. Eventually we drifted apart (Nothing to do with Pokemon).

  5. drug duck says:

Schoolyard Championships in the early 2000s… infected me with the competitive virus and were my first experience with link battles. I still remember losing a Mewtwo war because of a freeze from an opposing Mewtwo and I got mad because I didn’t thaw out xD

  6. Calm Lava says:

Just like almost everyone else here it looks like, my first battle was stadium 1 against my older sister. We only had one gameboy and blue version so we couldn’t battle each other on gameboy (we did raise an awesome haunter together though!)

  7. NM2 says:

Ah, the days of link battles in the school yard where every team consisted of Mewtwo, Zapdos, Moltres, Articuno, a starter and a cool looking Pokémon. I remember when I first tried to deviate from that team and used Tauros with Body Slam and Hyper Beam, that thing made me king of the school for a little bit until the other kids caught up. We may have been 9 or 10 years old with no idea about what a metagame is but the schoolyard metagame was evolving fast back in the day.

  8. SPEevee says:

My friend had Pokemon Blue so, which influenced me to get Pokemon Red. I told my sister who lived in the only city for 50 miles to buy and send me a link cable, I remember it costing £7 maybe? Despite the fact my friend bought the game before me and had already knowledge of the game we both started a new game and trained our Pokemon up till the link cable arrived. The thing was, I picked Charmander, he picked Bulbasaur. You can probably guess how this ended, especially since we were the types to just train up one Pokemon and ignore the rest of them. Considering my friend was more the expert I expected to lose even with the type advantage, he was about 10 levels higher or something like that. Really fun none the less~

  9. BowWave says:

1999- With a good friend of mine.
She isn’t with us anymore but I will always remember playing with her after school and throughout the summer!
Trading our starters in order to have them all and starting the game back again…
We were so stupid we could’t use any cheat, but that was a lot of fun.
This and many others memories I owe to Pokémon.

  10. TheOnceler says:

Setting up gym battles with other kids in my neighborhood. We had easily 10 kids all setup thier own type gym and we would battle to earn each other badges made with a custom pogz maker.

  11. Omega says:

My first multi-player battle was in 2006. I hosted a little Singles tournament among my friends back when we were all nublets. I was aware of tiers and such, but basically had no idea about synergy. It was pretty fun, but nothing compared to a VGC.

  12. BrewCrew says:

2006 There were these kids who claimed to be godly at pokemon and I bought a game just to beat and did in fact win.

  13. Carbonific says:

Started playing in Pokemon Blue, though I don’t think I actually beat it as I transferred all my mons to Pokemon Yellow when I got it and beat that instead. Despite the many starters that I had obtained as the result of playing both games I ended up considering my Alakazam more of a starter than any of them, due to me pretty much going through the game solo with him.

Anyway, my cousin challenged me to a battle whilst I was at his house trading. By then my Alakazam was level 100 and I was very proud of him. We started the battle and, with no more complicated description required, I completely destroyed the first 5 things they sent out being pre-level 100. After realizing this battle was never going to be serious with the level difference I think we both decided to pull out the link cable and see what happened since we’d both heard of the randomness that can occur when you do it. I suppose we never technically finished my first match as a result of that. Not that I had any less fun with what ensued.

Oh, and like many people who started playing at a young age, I tended to stick all moves of the same type on my Pokemon. So here’s the set that I used:
    – Psychic (For power)
    – Psybeam (For pp)
    – Psywave (When I was bored with the above)
    – Recover (For healing without wasting potions)
Not so good in hindsight :)

  14. insectboy1 says:

I remember playing through a link cable with my friends on RSE and thinking how awesome flygon and salamence were. Also about how powerful hyper beam and earthquake were xD

  15. Jayhonas says:

My first memory of a competitive Pokémon battle was in 2001 on my Gold version against my best friend at the time, Adrian. He totally outsmarted me (I mean, come on, I was 8 at the time) and beat my dearly beloved team.

  16. I was the year 2007, I set my jaw sideways hoping to look intimidating.  My friend had his lineup ready, I wasn’t too sure about mine.  I was hoping my Level 100 Rayquaza would pull me through this one.  We linked up via Link Cable and battled as fiercely as 11 year olds could.  I came out on top after nullifying his highest level Pokémon, it became a walk in the park.

Ya… I’m not too proud of my first multiplayer match now that I look back on it.  I was 11 with absolutely no knowledge on anything competitive.

  17. DaFreak says:

Well, I remember battling against my cousin in Pokémon Stadium 2, but since I don’t remember how was it – we were about 6 years old – I would like to share the first time I played in a multiplayer tournament.

Many teens in the neighborhood used to play Pokémon Fire red/ Leaf green, so we met at the cybercafe where older people were playing Counter Strike. The shop assistant promised 48h of free gaming for the winner, so we managed to organize a tournament. Well, I became the loser at the third encounter (such a pity, there were only 4 rounds) but I enjoyed that a lot. In fact, many CS players stopped playing it just to see our battles.

My team looked like this: miltank, charizard, alakazam, cloyster, ampharos and heracross.

  18. Master SaurD says:

Playing against a friend of mine in Diamond/Pearl after a Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament on the big screen for everyone to see.  It came down to his Choice Specs Lucario with Aura Sphere against my Shiny sub-petaya Sceptile, and my focus blast hit after getting down to the Petaya berry.  Everyone got hype.

  19. macki2k says:

I remember stumbling upon the pokemon youtuber nbz after having a hiatus from playing pokemon (I hadn’t played since I was about 10). I found out about competetive pokemon battling from him and had my very first multiplayer pokemon battle against my friend phil on pokemon showdown which I remember losing horribly.

  20. Liriane says:

First battle I can remember was in the 2nd grade; I don’t remember much, except that my Blastoise Kicked some serious butt!

  21. Lizard says:

2005, I played my first multiplayer battle with the link cable against an experienced friend and defeated him.
    Blaziken FTW!!

  22. lancealot says:

The year was 1997. I had the first model of gameboy ever released also known as the gameboy brick. It had no color, only black and white. I bought the Red version whereas my little brother purchased the Blue. But strangely I ended up choosing squirtle and he choose charmander as a starter. Probably because I wanted to counter his. There was no wifi battles back then, we had to stop and buy a link cable to connect our gameboys so that we could battle one another. This was also needed to evolve my brother’s Kadabra via trade.Ever since then we have been hooked and attend Spring VGCs together

  23. BlueMaster23 says:

My first multiplayer pokemon battle was in Pokemon Leaf Green with my friend but it is a tough loss for me because that time i know how to EV train my Pokemon and i loss to my friend who happens to have pokemon with mixed or scattered EV’S and Mixed Moveset :(

  24. Magic says:

First multiplayer battle? It was sometime ~2000 when my cousin and I, who were both 10 years old, faced each other using Blue and Yellow respectively. All I remember is that he stomped me with a Nidoking of all things. Being the brat that I was, I couldn’t believe that a Pokémon master such as myself had lost and demanded that we switch teams.

    He beat me again.

All of my multiplayer battles went about that well, hence why I had a 20% win ratio against other players in Generation I. Good times.

  25. BlitznBurst says:

It was the year 2000, and I was 3 years old. My older brother had just gotten Pokemon Stadium and I adored watching him play it. I myself took to it and played it a bunch with him, eventually understanding how it worked fully by the time I was 5 and was playing Pokemon Silver. My first battle I had with my own personally trained Pokemon in the playground during 1st grade where my Sceptile Sealeo combo was unbeatable. My first competitive battle experience was 2 years later in the JAA in Boston, MA, where I missed out on a chance to play in the competition and instead battled as many people i could in line to get their free 10th anniversary Pokemon with my level 100 Hitmontop Flygon Umbreon and Sudowoodo.

I’ve been Pokedriven from a very young age as you can see :)

  26. VanillaVulpix says:

My first multiplayer battle was in Ruby during an event at a local mall. I spent ages leveling my Pokemon up to level 100 and I was so excited when I finally got them up to it. I certainly was a terrible team builder – I remember having a Blaziken, Linoone, and Altaria on my team. In the first round, I lost in a matter of minutes. I couldn’t be upset about the loss though – I had a ton of fun anyway!

  27. lucariojr says:

it was around 2003; my friend only had one level 80 swampert and i had a bunch of level 50’s. it took a few pokemon to bring it down, but after that all he had left was a few level 20’s-40’s. i don’t actually remember the guy’s name (or what he does nowadays), but afterwards we had a good talk about how to raise a team of strong pokemon and we had more battles afterwards of better quality until i moved to a different school.

  28. Oryx says:

Link battles for me really started with Diamond and Pearl since it was relatively convenient not to have a cable to worry about. Battling with my brothers while we were in-game was a really fun experience. We would always end up somehow having a starter showdown as I always chose the fire starter (this case, Infernape), my middle brother usually picked the grass (Torterra) versus my youngest brother’s Empoleon.

This summer while on vacation in Pakistan, my cousins always wanted to battle since they knew we played competitively but obviously wanted us to use our in-game mons to level the playing field. My one cousin always demanded a rematch and gradually came from a 3-0 loss to 2-0 to 1-0. Some MVPs were definitely my Brave Vaporeon “Vaps” who was a beast and my Flygon. Overall, link battles are always a fun time especially as you hop from gym to gym and you surprise your regular opponents with a newly evolved mon or a new catch.

UHH waiting for X and Y is going to be the longest 4 DAYS OF MY LIFE.

  29. Arbol Deku says:

Playing with my neighbour with the cable link of Crystal Version! (It happens arround ten years ago) I was using a Tyranitar with all the punch attacks, and a dragon dance dragonite! Good old times :D

  30. Mean says:

Played vs a childhood friend on gsc when I was 9. I won knocking out his Feraligatr by using thunderpunch with my Typhlosion ^^
