Japan’s Beginning Cup WiFi Tournament Begins

The first Pokémon Black 2/White 2 tournament, the Beginning Cup, began earlier today. As previously reported, the Beginning Cup consists of Wi-Fi rated double battles with a twist: you are only allowed to use Pokémon from the BW2 Unova Pokédex (not including Victini, Reshiram, Zekrom, Kyurem, Keldeo, Meloetta, and Genesect). How is this any different from VGC 2011 rules? In BW2 the Unova Pokédex has changed considerably from BW. While it still contains all of the old Unova Pokédex, the updated Pokédex now allows a few VGC staples like Metagross and Tyranitar while deviating from VGC 2012 by keeping others like Abomasnow and Politoed banned. Of course, all the important new BW2 toys, including new Dream World abilities, tutor moves, and the Therian Formes, will be allowed, impacting the metagame in new and exciting ways. The tournament will run from today until 23:59 August 26th, Japan Standard Time and is only open to Pokémon Black 2 and Pokémon White 2 game cartridges.

While you’re already online, don’t forget that the Japanese Pokémon Global Link has released a new C-Gear skin for BW2 in commemoration of the Beginning Cup and the recently concluded Pokémon Video Game World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. It is available from now until September 25th.

Are you playing in the tournament or interested in posting your thoughts about this interesting new metagame? We’ll be discussing the intricacies of the new metagame and the tournament itself in the comments section!
