Live Updates and Livestream from the VGC ’14 NorCal Regional
The first Regional Championship of the new season is upon us! For the first time since 2011, only one Regional Championship will be happening this weekend. As in past competitions, we’ll have updates live from the tournament on our Twitter feed so you can see how the players in attendance are doing! Don’t know who’ll be there? While we wait for the event to start, you can read Scott’s excellent preview article to see how the event might play out.
We also plan to have a livestream for the top cut on our Twitch channel. Stay tuned to our Twitter feed to be notified of when we start!
Don’t forget today is the last day of our contest for Pokemon X & Y!

They only got 109 players, so expect this to be really brutal given that I named about a fourth of those players in the preview article… should get some good matches once the stream starts. Nobody is getting a free ride at this one!
Famous people update because I know following the standings in twitter is sort of hard for people who aren’t FB friends with most of the competitors:
not sure if 2010 or 2013, wish them the best of luck!!!
Just want to point out that Ansel Blume’s name on Nugget Bridge is http://nuggetbridge.com/forums/user/1186-stats/.
GO PHENAC!!!
#canadian #invasion
Looks like Zach is up for his usual regional rompe … can this guy be stopped at regionals???
1Bad Intent vs 8Rasta Charmander, 4 makiri vs. 5 socalmatt / 2. phenac vs. 7 pbb, 3. shreyas vs. 6 omegadonut

Yay PBB, what a nice comeback from “retirement”. Now take it on home!
Before my opinion gets tainted by what happens from here: how good is this top cut? Probably not who most of us were expecting to make it this far for the most part, but Suleski, PBB, and BadIntent are among the best in the world when they’re all on and it’s exciting to see them all cut at once. Hope they keep it up this season — Team USA was looking pretty feeble at the end of last year and the could all help make us better this season if they stick around. Pumped to see Paul top cutting, too, obviously… I think I’m gonna have a quiet season this time in my post-commentaryologist life so he’s gotta carry the flag for team NB admins. Fun story with Phenac cutting too, graduating Seniors always seem to be deadly for some reason, lol. Shoutout to RastaCharmander too, I’m surprised he made it into the cut but I see him practicing more than almost anyone so it’s neat to see that pay off. I don’t know Shreyas much at all and am sort of rooting against socalmatt after the classy “insult the vgc community on a tcg site” thread but this is a really fun top cut bracket, I’m excited.
also while my FonicFrog prediction didn’t wind up being as safe as I planned the difficulty rating was ghosts for a reason. consider yourselves haunted.
Extending my appreciation for the stream. As a (ex?) producer, I always enjoy when a stream allows me to see a distant event live, especially since this particular event starts our season. Rooting for a BadIntent or Makiri win here.
told you

Yo I’m Kimo Nishimura (I guess I’m not cool enough to be listed this year!) and I had a great time at this regional. My game with OmegaDonut was very well played and this is the first year I’m not salty about missing Top Cut lol. I’m also happy to hear that Ansel Blume has an NB account because the game I played with him was fantastic.
Happy to see you all and US BEST
Oh also, I’ve read numerous times on here that players are “washed up” and I like to think that this regional proves that doesn’t really happen in Pokemon. IMO, it’s just rust.
Well that was garbage, on a lighter note since I had most of it done anyway I finished updating losses for top 32. Kind of interesting to see how the tournament works with the data displayed this way:
PBB!
Man a lot of 5-2s missing out though. Top 8 cuts are gonna be rough…
To clarify, I thought about traveling here but I never made any plans other than that. I never told anyone I was coming here, but I guess that’s why it’s a rumor. I thought it was funny.
Congrats to all of the top finishers and everyone who played today for putting on a good show for the season opener. Talk about blast from the past…what a run. Also, many thanks to everyone involved with updates and maintaining the stream. Watch for my camera next week.
So I ended up beating two third place finishers at worlds and then lost to murkrow/thundurus/primeape/cincinno
And a rain team with weavile after beating a rain team with weavile round 1.

Pros:
+ Getting to hang out with people
+ Got enough people on Streetpass to finish Find Mii and Mii Puzzle
+ Evolving my Frogadier and Charmeleon
Cons:
– Getting DQ’ed (obv)
– Leaving before finals (again)
Congrats PBB, BadIntent, and all of the other competitiors who placed well! Really happy to see PBB win it all on his comeback tour =)
^ ouch that’s a tough way to get DQed…guess one should always use Protect, even with a “risk” of imprison.
OK, really? If you’re using PokeGen at all to blatantly hack your Pokemon because you’re either too lazy or didn’t set up enough time beforehand to at least EV train your Pokemon, you deserve to be DQ’d. Of course it stings to be disqualified from a tournament, but when you’re using Pokemon you didn’t even take the effort to EV train of all things, you should expect that. I’m very disappointed that people use PokeGen and still get through tournaments simply because the hack check doesn’t cover everything it should. Hopefully they get better for X and Y, because even the thought of someone trying that is just so morally wrong in my opinion.
Yeah the hackcheck is clearly broken and hackers like Sejun Park should be banned for life. I mean seriously, this guy walks in to worlds with a magmar that clearly doesn’t have an iv spread thats possible to get in XD and a shiny scrafty from bw2 even though we all know that thats impossible due to the static seed glitch!
The nerve of some people, back before pokecheck you had to do things the old fashioned way, begging your friends who know how to rng to make your team for you.
At least Sejun has some modicum of team building ingenuity. Sorry to hear about Marco’s DQ, not surprised Gavin lost to Cinccino and Weavile (they’re op duh), and am super proud of OD for his finish in what was a tough tourney.
I finish in 49th with 4 wins 3 losses Couldn’t get to the top 8
I was at the tournament also
I formed an opinion on the community based on five minutes of browsing. After this weekend I completely regret saying those things, everyone I met from this site was amazing. Well except Kamz, but everyone hates Kamz
