Site Updates: Showdown Server Move, Event Listings, and Search

Over the past week, there have been many updates done on Nugget Bridge. A few have been minor like having comment counts listed on the article listings, easier navigation of comments, and the ability to click on the author’s name on the article listing to be taken to their author page. However, we’ve also implemented some more major features that are important to be aware of:

Our Pokémon Showdown Server is Moving

Simulator play is not a priority on Nugget Bridge but we do recognize it is a useful tool for testing. As such, we have maintained a server for Pokémon Showdown so the community can test with like-minded players. A short while ago, Pokémon Showdown implemented chat rooms into the client. With this, we have very little reason to maintain our own server. After talking with Showdown staff, we’ve decided that it’s in everybody’s best interest to move from our own server into a channel on the main server. What does this mean for you?

  • You’ll need to update your bookmarks to the new address
  • You’ll have a larger pool of players on the ladder
  • The simulator statistics collected by Smogon will be more accurate of the simulator metagame
  • You will always be on the most updated version of Showdown

We will still have our own staff on the channel and will also get assistance from the official server staff. The chat should not change too much and the same rules we have on our current server and website still apply. The current server will be shutting down soon once we’ve made sure the new solution works for us. Please let your friends know they should move on over to http://psim.us/vgc!

Event Listings

We have a brand new Events page which will list upcoming confirmed tournaments in the Pokémon Video Game Championships series. As new tournaments are confirmed, they will be added here. We hope this will serve as an easier-to-browse alternative to the official Pokémon Event Locator.

Search

Our old WordPress search function has been replaced by Google. When using the new search bar, you will have more relevant results pop up. Results will be pulled from both the main site as well as the forums giving you the best chance of finding what you’re looking for!

Let us know what you think about these changes and if you see any odd bugs in the comments!

it’s so much harder to stalk random battles on ps! now :(

  2. Ezrael says:

I dont mean to be one of the guys just complaining about change. I hope that i dont do that in general. However, searching for battles in VGC is not useful on the main server. i recently faced an opponent who, in tr and facing a tyranitar, helping handed his mamoswine, ninetales and volcarona, who all got OHKO’d.
the old server’s exclusivity was what made it USEFUL. I would like to petition to have the old server back, or to move back to Pokemon Online

  3. Cypher says:

For those who want a client for PS, similar to PO, there’s External, just simply download, and go to the VGC tab

  4. SoulSurvivor says:

The above was my only true complaint with this being on the main server(played two players using Bulldoze Ferrothorn in trickroom). Other than that usage stats, and the other benefits of playing on the main server will be interesting. I don’t have to have two tabs up to play little cup and vgc now.

  5. Knight says:

I tried the server out a bit, and sure you run into some nutty stuff sometimes, but it makes good practice for those first few rounds of regionals when you don’t know what to expect. For the most part, the the skill level seems pretty goodh though.

  6. Chauzu says:

I have no problems with this, I already hang out at both places as is and the larger player pool is good. The downside with changes like this are that it is inevitable that some people leave out of protest, which would be a huge shame. Hope to see all of you over at the new server!

  7. I can finally test out rapid spin for real!

I’m pretty happy with this.  While I like independence, it makes sense to have VGC on that server.  More opportunities for exposure if never a bad thing.  The only downside is that there’s more lag now, but Pokemon isn’t exactly a latency-dependent game.

  9. Crow says:

Don’t really have cares about server changes. The bar at the top of the site is nice! However I feel the site feels REALLY dark now; the margins could use some color.

  10. Firestorm says:

Yes, I did take into account that the average level of play would decrease when moving into the main server. It’s obviously no secret that there was a skill gap between the two servers. This is something that happens when you get a larger playerpool as well. At a Regional, you’re sure to run into these players as well. The increase of lower level players in the ladder pool does not outweigh the benefits of moving though. The maintenance and costs are not worth a few less people complaining about the lack of skill on the ladder. It’s something we were already receiving complaints about when we ran our own server.

If you’re looking for challenging battles against players who aren’t a part of your testing circle, I know makiri should be finishing up his plans for the Nugget Bridge Circuit this year. That’s what you should be on the lookout for.

  11. Scott says:

I, for one, am devastated by this development, because now I’m not going to be able to get on top of the main server’s VGC ladder moving only while I’m dead while playing PS3 games with Danny and Paul

Even I’m not dead that often

  12. AlphaZealot says:

The site continues to look very clean and professional. Keep it up.

  13. Enigne says:

I did all of my practice on the main server this year. There are bad players, but there are also plenty of skilled ones, and I was able to prepare for worlds using it. I don’t think the server will become useless.

  14. Darkeness says:

Just my two bits on this: Level of play looked really crappy, and I was playing almost entirely players who were rated 1700+.  I don’t have access to DS compatible wifi for about 8 months of the year, which means that I couldn’t play in NB Circuit live tournaments for practice (which is essentially what is being suggested as a mode of practice instead of playing a bunch of battles on the NB server).  It would be really nice if all NB Circuit matches could be played on this well maintained, updated showdown server, especially because few people really want to go through the hassle of RNGing and EVing every mon they want to test.

Other than that, I don’t expect the level of play to stay quite this low for too too long.  NB dropping a 100+ talented players playing pretty often should cause bad players to compete with good ones far more frequently, which is really the best way for bad players to get better anyway, so I’d expect the average level of play will start increasing pretty rapidly.

  15. GeMiNi says:

Will a link to the Showdown server appear once again at the top like it used to be? That was very convenient.

  16. Firestorm says:

You can find a link on the header bar at the top. We likely will not be putting up another button on the sidebar as I’d like to use the space in other ways in the near future.

  17. TwiddleDee says:

    No GA regional?! 🙁
Well, this season is a complete bust for me. The closest to me is Virginia which is still 7 hours away!! No love for the southeast >:(

Not all regionals have been announced yet. We cannot add information for regionals we don’t know about.

  19. TwiddleDee says:

Oh, I thought these were the only ones.. Thanks for the clarification.
