[NBR] Under the Bridge 005: VGC ’14 Rules, Breeding Mechanics (You’ll Need to Know Them)

The boys are back! After a week off to attend to various job interviews, hosts Alan Sutterlin (Dubulous), and Matt Sybeldon (bearsfan092) return just in time for the holidays. Listen as they discuss their experience at one of the very first X & Y tournaments at Penn State, the brand new 2014 season VGC rules, and some of the awesome new elements of the breeding mechanics. Matt shares some of his picks for over and underachievers thus far in the season, and we pick a Pokémon of the Month for December.  Stay tuned, and you just might have a chance to win one.

You can download an MP3 version of the show here. Keep tabs on the hosts by following them on Twitter at @Dubs_NB and @bearsfan092_vgc. Send us your questions and comments!

Sorry guys, I know I promised iTunes but then the website broke and I got distracted trying to get us up and running on our new host. There’s one piece of the puzzle I need to work out still but it will be up once I do.

  4. Dubulous says:

Agh, we totally forgot one part.  I have a particular fondness for any grassroots tournament for Pokemon.  We completely snubbed the UK series and missed discussing about Toquill, some of the metagame stuff, etc.  Apologies about that, and we’ll try to be on the ball in the future.

    Good work, as always.

Talonflame is certainly in a bit of a strange spot in the meta…
It is pretty well summed up by saying that “If you can tank a CB Brave Bird, you will likely be able to beat Talonflame”. Teams that are a bit more balanced, or defensively oriented tend to not have much to worry about from the bird. But for someone like me, who often plays a high offense battle style, it can be a real nightmare for the teams I build. On a similar note, Talonflame makes life a whole lot harder for Fighting type Pokemon. In addition to the new fairy type they have to deal with, they also have to deal with something that can fairly easily OHKO them with a priority Brave Bird. Talonflame’s existance also kind of killed a lot of hype I had for using Mega Abomasnow, as that too can be easily downed by a single LO Brave Bird.

Or in otherwords, it disrupts my usual playstyle, and heavily counters a lot of cool mons I like, so I don’t like Talonflame. Staraptor is still #1 early game bird for me.

Nice to see someone else who thinks Talonflame’s vastly overhyped. I really enjoy listening to these podcasts and hearing your thoughts on the metagame. Keep it up!
