All-Star Cup Tournament Announced for Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 (On Now)

Is the 2012 Video Game World Championships, which just completed the first day of competition in Kona, HI, not story enough for you? The Japanese Pokémon Global Link has just announced a brand-new Wi-Fi tournament in addition to the previously announced Beginning Cup. This new tournament, the All-Star Cup, is scheduled to begin in September and is open to Black 2 and White 2 cartridges only. Like the Beginning Cup, the tournament format will be double battles, and only Pokémon from the Unova Pokédex will be allowed.

The twist? The All-Star Cup is being held in conjunction with the Japanese release of the special Pokémon Genesect and will allow all Pokémon listed in the Unova Pokédex, including Kyurem formes, Keldeo, Meloetta, and Genesect. This makes the All-Star Cup one of the few chances to use special event Pokémon in competitive play and is sure to give rise to new and interesting strategies and teams. With speculation about next season’s official VGC ruleset, the All-Star and Beginning Cups have thrown two unexpected metagames into the mix. While we hope to have more information about next season’s rules shortly after Worlds, let us know how you feel about this exciting metagame in the comments thread below!

We’ll post more details about the All-Star Cup and next season’s ruleset as they become available.

Update! Full Details Announced

The Japanese Pokémon Global Link has just revealed all the details of this tournament on their website. For those of you who don’t speak Japanese, here’s the rundown:

The All-Star Cup will be played in the Double Battle format, allowing every Pokémon from the updated Unova Pokédex  #000 – #300 to compete in play with only one Pokémon per Pokédex number allowed on a team (Sorry, but this means you can only carry one of the Kyurem formes!). Registration will begin September 14 at 13:00 JST and conclude September 20 at 23:59 JST with the All-Star Cup beginning at 00:00 September 21 JST and ending at 23:59 JST September 23. Finally, players in the All-Star Cup will be split into the Juniors, Seniors, and Masters divisions based on their ages. As a special bonus, everyone who participates in the tournament will receive a Micle Berry!
