Japan Cup 2014 Announced as Qualifier for Japan National Championship

Like last year, Japan’s National Championships for the VGC ’14 season will be invite-only with the players decided by an online tournament. Japan Cup 2014 will run from the evening of Friday May 2nd to the morning of Monday May 5th, 2014. Registration will last from April 23rd to a few hours before the start of the tournament.

Players will be split into the three age divisions and only play others in the same age division. They’ll access the tournament in the same way as the Beta Competition earlier this year and play under the Standard ruleset. Also like the Beta Competition, there will be a maximum amount of battles allowed to be played.

This is actually the first online tournament of Pokémon X & Y that has been announced as part of the Pokémon Video Game Championships so we look forward to seeing what other news comes out for the season!

Call me a fool, but how is an online tournament for a qualifier during the week good for the game?

Because he has his words backwards. It’s Friday May 2nd to Monday May 5th

Hopefully, now that D/Cs have become a non-issue, this WiFi tourney will turn out a bit better than what they had to deal with in the BW days.

It’s not. It’s yamsing stupid. After VGC 2010 Japanese qualifiers have always been terrible. They don’t get enough entrants into Worlds, they don’t get proper offline tournaments. Even 2010 was crappy, it was still single slim, but everyone had that. Their terrible qualifiers are the reason there hasn’t been a Japanese Worlds winner in years. If they had a fair shot… Well let me stop before I start a firestorm like I am known for.

Yikes. I completely screwed something up while looking at my calendar. I blame dyslexia. Fixed

In any case, the maximum number of battles is interesting… I’m really not liking it as I think it opens up potential for abuse.

  5. mattj says:

That maximum battles per day thing is terrible.  If you’ve got something going on the last day you’re screwed.

  6. Xenoblade Hero says:

It’s not a particularly great system. The only reason I’ve managed events is because they’re done at an event rather than through online tournaments as my internet connection is terrible. I can imagine many people being denied a qualification chance because of this

There are reasons this sucks but internet connection quality isn’t a significant issue in Japan so don’t worry too much about that. ;)

Even if it had been Monday to Friday it might not have been so bad, because this period happens to be the “golden week” in Japan where there are many consecutive/near-consecutive public holidays. Obviously it’s bettter if its the weekend though.

Whenever I’m frustrated with TPCI, I think “Well, at least it isn’t TPC.”

I didn’t really expect better this year, but I had non-zero hopes after it seemed like things were growing, and the more competitive parts of the game were getting more attention from Japan. Garbage again. At least the lack of DCing should protect the innocent players some, and maybe help identify some of the players who weren’t so innocent after all…

  10. Jealous of japan’s system once again. You only need to play pokemon for 2 weekends to qualify for worlds. yams the stupid minimum 4 tournament $2000 travelling to qualify in the US

  11. melevin9 says:

I dont think it is as bad as people seem to suggest. The d/c’ing fix on top of the lack of pokecheck and the intoduction of number of matches cap gives a fair chance for everyone to qualify.

  12. Dreykopff says:

What is the issue with the limit of battles per day? I think that’s really cool, because that takes the big grind out of these things; people who want to do well shouldn’t be required like 50 battles a day…

Well, so much for the Asia Cup being the Worlds qualifier, whoever really believed that anyway.

  13. R Inanimate says:

The issue about the battle limit thing is the worry that people might try to game the system a bit with their battles. For example, you’re more likely to make gains in points if you wait until the last day (or last 2 days) and marathon all your battles, since battles you don’t play per day will carry over to be able to be played another day.

But honestly… weren’t two of the major reasons why we considered WiFi qualifiers such a bad idea back in BW era due to:
    1. Intentionals D/Cs not really being properly punishable, and thus largely invalidating the results on who probably should have qualified
    2. pretty much needing to no-life away the entire tourney period to maintain competitiveness for the rankings.

Doesn’t the current “D/C = loss” and battling limit kind of fix those issues (depending on what they actually set the limit to)? Kind of feels like something that may be better off just waiting and seeing what the reaction from Japanese Players are when it comes to playing the tourney, and the final result for it.

Wishful thinking would be that they would end up with something like T64 from the WiFi tourney move on to Nationals. Which gets Swiss and bo3 top cut. But what their rule set for nats is sort of a separate issue from the fact that they qualify by WiFi Tourney.

  14. Arbol Deku says:

The same days as the German national! Its gonna be a Pokemon weekend so far 🙂

  15. Yveltal says:

definitely NOT garbage. This is so much preferred to flying all over the country over a bunch of weekends and getting a team revealed, copied, scouted everywhere! Very happy to participate from the comfort of my own home, at no cost, under anonymity, with a team people can’y prepare for after they see it. Now they just need to get rid of team preview.
