Nugget Bridge Major Round Three: Highlight Matches

The Nugget Bridge Major is a juggernaut of unstoppable momentum with round two eventually giving away to round three. Like the first round, round two saw its fair share of upsets and surprises, but before we talk about those, let’s look at what’s at stake in the Nugget Bridge Major:

Rules

The rules for the Nugget Bridge Major are as follows:

  • Each match will be played in a best of 3 series, and teams cannot be changed between those games. However, teams can be changed after the conclusion of each round.
  • The current GBU ruleset will be used which means Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon White 2 formes and tutors may be used.
  • Matches can be played on either Wi-Fi or Pokemon Online, however if a battling medium cannot be agreed upon, Wi-Fi must be used. Matches may ONLY be played on the Pokemon Online official server. For more information on battling on sim, read this forums post.
  • If playing Pokemon Black 2 or Pokemon White 2 against a player on Pokemon Black or Pokemon White, a player using formes must announce the forme to the opponent.

Anything not covered here will be handled at the discretion of the NBC Major host, makiri.

Results of Last Week’s Highlight Matches

Babbytron vs Human

In the first of two intergenerational battles highlighted last week, Human took home the win over the record holder for most Regional Championships won. While Juniors phenom Babbytron has proven able to hold his own against both Seniors and Masters division players, he finally met his match, bowing out in Round Two after a close set of three.

Fishy vs MrFox

Age trumps youth in this battle, the second intergenerational battle of the round. While MrFox has a storied career that culminated in a visit to Hawaii to compete in the World Championships last year, the Seniors division National runner-up was unable to break past Fishy, who adds to her 9th place finish at the US Nationals in the Masters division a pass into Round Three of the Major after a close set of three.

JRank vs FonicFrog

FonicFrog is on a roll. After his 2-0 defeat of TEXAS TACO in Round One, he followed up that victory with another 2-0 victory over JRank, providing him with enough momentum, he hopes, to carry him through the rest of the tournament.

SoulSurvivor vs nachocheese999

Speaking of undefeated, nachocheese999 joins FonicFrog as one of the only trainers who has not yet dropped a match after his 2-0 victory over SoulSurvivor. nachocheese’s current success follows a top cut at the Philadelphia Regionals in the Masters division after an incredibly successful 2012 season as a Senior.

Biosci vs cakesofspan

cakesofspan proved why he made Top 16 at US Nationals in 2012 with a decisive 2-0 victory over Hawaii resident and RNG supplier to the stars Biosci. cakes’ 2-0 victory also makes him undefeated over the course of the tournament.

evan vs Evan Falco

I regret to inform you, dear reader, that your intrepid, smart, handsome and clever editor evan dropped to California’s very own not-Evan Evan Falco in two matches. A plaintive wail is heard over the prairie as mother Earth weeps for his loss.

Round Three Highlight Matches

Human vs FonicFrog

Without a doubt, this is THE highlight match of the round. Both of these players are known for consistently placing well in tournaments but just off from where they need to be. With the defeat of RubeNCB in the first round, the heavy favorite in the predictions tournament, both of these players are looking like strong competitors for the first quadrant’s Semifinals spot. While Human had a tough battle with Babbytron last week, FonicFrog has been cruising through the tournament, currently undefeated at 4-0 overall. Whether FonicFrog’s momentum will be enough to carry him through the next round or if Human’s nailbiter with Babby gives him the edge will be one of the most important questions to answer this week.

nachocheese999 vs Huy

nachocheese is on a roll right now. He’s undefeated in the tournament, he’s coming off a top 8 finish at the Philadelphia Regional Championships, and he’s still riding high from his fourth place finish at the 2012 Seniors World Championship in Kona, HI. Of course, he’s being met by VGC veteran Huy, whose storied career includes multiple top 8 Worlds finishes though he bubbled out at 9th this year. nachocheese already proved he could be a threat at the Regional level in the Masters by top cutting in Philly, but if he can take out Huy, he’ll need to be watched as a potential National- and Worlds-level threat.

Crow vs kinderlew

Pokemon is a game with many vibrant personalities. Perhaps the most vibrant and flamboyant is our boy kinderlew. Known mostly for his post-event videos and his role as the head of the kindergang, kinderlew could prove to be a tough challenger for odds-on favorite Crow. In a tournament of upsets, this is one to keep an eye on.

Red Striker vs Mrbopper

It was inevitable after Houston Regionals, but here we are writing even more about Team Magma. Still, I didn’t quite expect to be writing about this match when we got to the inevitable “Magma v Magma” showdown, but Red Striker and Mrbopper are proving themselves underrated threats in the Nugget Bridge Major. Last round, Red Striker pulled off a surprising upset against my admin buddy Scott, while Mrbopper is undefeated after his decisive 2-0 victory over tennisace the round before. Two strong dark horse picks here.

DrFidget vs cakesofspan

cakesofspan making his regularly scheduled appearance in the highlight matches section, no big deal. cakes has made it into all three of our highlight matches (all written by three different analysts, even!) and for good reason: he’s had a tough schedule. And yet, and yet, cakesofspan remains undefeated at 4-0, not dropping a single match to any of his opponents. His difficult schedule continues as he comes up against DrFidget, fresh off his Ft Wayne regional success and also undefeated in the Major. Either of these players could go deep, though they haven’t been predicted to do so well (likely because they risk coming up against Wolfe Glick next round). The winner of this match will be one to keep an eye on.

Evan Falco vs Nickscor

See? No hard feelings for my loss to Falco last round. The Cali not-Evan phenom goes up against his Cali bro Nickscor in what can only be described as a rad battle. Falco’s tubular Worlds appearance and strong finish at this year’s San Jose regional will go up against Nickscor, who made it to the round of 16 at last year’s US National Championships. With predictions favorite Zach dropping last round, this quadrant is wide open and either of them could make a run for the semis if not more.

Something something avocado something something In-N-Out.

Cathadora vs Wolfey

Okay. I’ll be honest. Cath only gets an inclusion because he’s a friend (pays to know someone at the top) and because of the comedic value of watching Wolfe dominate the more inexperienced Cathadora. Also, this is yet another tournament Cath has inexplicably done better than I have, including his top 8 finish at this year’s Houston, TX Regional. Someone’s got to fix that.
