Australia Added to the 2013 Pokémon Video Game Championships

Well that rumour didn’t last long! Australians have been crying out for a National Championship in their country for years and today, their calls were heard. The very first Penny Arcade Expo Australia will play host to the very first Australia Pokémon VGC National on July 20th and 21st. Like the events in North America, Europe, and Asia, there will be three age divisions:

  • Juniors: Born in 2002 or later
  • Seniors: Born in 1998, 1999, 2000, or 2001
  • Masters: Born in 1997 or earlier

The top two finishers in each division will receive an invitation to play in the 2013 Pokémon World Championships in Vancouver, Canada along with flights and accommodations to the event. The exact format of the tournament is unknown at this time. For players who do not have a ticket to the now sold out PAX Australia, there will be a number of tournaments held in Australia with PAX Australia tickets and flights + accommodations up for grabs. These events — dubbed Battle Competitions — will be held at:

  • Perth (Supanova Pop Culture Expo) Sunday 30th June
  • Melbourne (Deakin Edge – Federation Square)  Saturday 6th July
  • Brisbane (Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre) Sunday 7th July
  • Adelaide (AVCon Anime and Video Game Convention) Saturday 13th July
  • Sydney (Luna Park) Sunday 14th July

Yes! You read that right! The first event is this coming weekend and the next two will be held the same weekend as the US National Championships. Each weekend leading up to PAX Australia will have an event.  A little short notice, but the entrance of Australia in the VGC circuit is exciting to see!

We hope our Australian readers can make these events and keep us updated! Will you be attending?

  1. If they just have 1 nationals, thats not gonna be nearly enough points for some1 to make worlds right? Doesn’t winning a national only give u like 200 Championship Points?

(On a sidenote a wanted to try this)

  2. Scott says:

    ………………..

Winning a National is worth 400 CP in NA and Europe, which would be more than enough for an invite anywhere, but Australia is doing its own thing here like Korea and Japan, it isn’t based on CP. The top two finishers get invites and trips to Worlds like in Japan.

  3. peng says:

Even though the late announcement (even by TPCi’s standards) sucks, I’m really excited for what this could potentially bring to the game. Australia has some of the biggest names when it comes to singles (hence their incredible Smogon WCOP record up until last year), and I’m sure if any of those guys dedicated some time to VGC in the coming years they could make some very deep runs at Worlds.

  4. Firestorm says:

Strong Team Oceania member makiri will take this.

  5. FamousDeaf says:

    Update from Perth Qualifier:
“Its Double Elimation, Single matches(not best if three). IR only which means no Team Preview.”
They are really need to have team preview for Qualifier and National. I won’t be happy when the rules are like that in Melbourne.

  6. TripleProtect says:

Not a fan of the no team preview, more likely to get screwed over with that, hmm.

  7. Firestorm says:

    Any event Pokemon distribution?

I don’t think so. I am waiting for ‘Garchomp’ to update for Perth Qualifier on Facebook or post on here.

Me too, I tested my team on PS like hardcore with Chiron. However, our PS team might get screwed up because of no team preview. I don’t know what to run anymore for it.

  9. Chiron says:

Garchomp came second though we know nothing else about tickets, flights, etc. Hopefully when he gets home and writes something up we’ll know more. Congrats man :)

  10. FamousDeaf says:

Congrats to Garchomp for came second.
    He was comment on post:
“No team registrations but you have to use the same four Pokemon all day. No team preview.”
He will make a little report about qualifier, he needs to rest from it.

  11. Chiron says:

“You just fill in a sheet with personal info, nothing about your team or Pokemon.

    Sadly only 1st :(“

From Garchomps Facebook. So it looks like winner takes all. I’ll just start copy pasting any relevant information from the people that went and let you guys decipher it how you will. Basically; if you guys ever thought you had a tournament run badly, welcome to Australia x_x

  12. Chiron says:

Technically you were allowed to change Pokemon teams out of the 6 Pokemon you would usually take into battle (and pick the four ones you want) since it was IR battles you can only have four Pokemon in your battle box/party. Mid tournament they went out and said you can only use the 4 Pokemon you have in your party/battle box and it can’t be changed

This comes from one of the competitors from today. There is still a bit of confusion as to wether you have to consistently use the same 4 Pokemon, if you can choose 4 from your 6 each battle, or same Pokemon different order.

No other prizes were given out. So first or unlucky Unfortunately it looks like luck and leads like TopMoth, PoliKing are going to be defining on the day. Safe to say, FamousDeaf and I aren’t that happy 😐

  13. Chiron says:

“No one got caught out, there were no checkers. (referring to hack checks I believe)

You just bring 4 Pokemon because its IR.”

Wow. Okay. More news from Garchomp. Sorry if it seems repetitive. Just trying to give anything of note.

  14. Chiron says:

Roughly 50 people turned up. This isn’t amazing but considering it was 3 days notice and many poeple wouldn’t have been able to go due to the prize of getting into SupaNova and plans already made I don’t think it is too shabby.

  15. TripleProtect says:

I am so confused as to what I should bring / prepare for in Brisbane now.

  16. No hack check? Not even an on call hack check? If your opponent is using over-EV’d Pokemon or illegal moves, was there no way to get them DQ’d?

There was one incident apparently where someone used a lightningrod Zapdos. The opponent spotted it, someone was call over and the person was DQd or something along those lines. But yeah, it doesn’t look like any real hack checks.

This is the winning team from Perth. Annnnnd I’m done for Perth.

Yeah the kid got it from a friend and did not know that it was a hack. He also got other pokemon from the same friend so they could have also been hacked. Well done to garchomp and to the other pokeclectic guys. It was one weird tournament, it was’nt really VGC which was a shame as most of us would have preferred VGC rules.

  20. Garchomp says:

I’m writing up a report for Vooks.net, it should be uploaded today. I just wanna say, 50+ people for Perth is pretty bidoof good. I’ve been running the competitive scene in Perth for 6 years so I know a good turnout when I see one.

I’ll also just clarify that you have to use the same 4 Pokémon all day, no subs. I think this was done because if Union Room was used(which is needed for Team preview) the tournament would of been a mess, trying to get people to match up correctly, as it was a number paring system. And with IR, you battle with the exact number of Pokémon you have in your party, you don’t get to choose. So, you could have 4 against your opponents 6.

Also, it’s confirmed that proper hack checks WILL be at Nationals.

  21. Biosci says:

Chiron can you please just use the edit button, waking up to seeing you quintuple post like that was D:

  22. Cypher says:

So, in the end, this tour is similar to the ones previously hosted in 2011 where they have IR battles with Wonder Launcher with no team preview and 2011 rules?

    e.g.

  23. cobalte says:

No Wonder Launcher this time, and it’s Double Elimination (for Qualifiers anyway).

Where on vooks.net is it ?

  25. d4vey says:

    Here’s the Grand Final match

Garchomp came close to winning. Although the person who actually won it still had his second life intact. So even if Garchomp would have won he another battle would need to take place. At the end of the day it really just came down to luck. You your team would either have an amazing matchup against the person you battle or they would have a team that could sweep yours.

Team preview + Best out of 3 matches + Swiss would have changed the tournament completely and made it a lot better.
Looking forward to Australia’s Regionals/Nationals next year and hopefully they don’t give us a 3 day notice before the event date.

    • Random Number pairing, with two Age brackets (Juniors and Seniors)

Oh man its like we’re back in korea again

  27. FamousDeaf says:

    Thanks to Garchomp for report.
I don’t know what to use pokemon for qualifier and it was hard than I thought.

  28. Thowra says:

    Thanks for the report Garchomp!

Man, you Perth guys must’ve had it tough as the no team preview was unannounced. All my teams are built with team preview in mind, I don’t know what I would’ve done had I been there and got told I could only bring 4 of the 6 ‘mons I trained…

Well done though, thoroughly enjoyed reading the report and watching the match!

Hopefully there’ll be one next year that I can go to, it’ll be exciting to meet a bunch of other NB battlers :3

    UPDATE:
“We should also mention that this weekend, the top 50 placed competitors will win tickets to PAX for the day of their age division national championship.”

I am really surprised about that.
