Australia Added to the 2013 Pokémon Video Game Championships

Well that rumour didn’t last long! Australians have been crying out for a National Championship in their country for years and today, their calls were heard. The very first Penny Arcade Expo Australia will play host to the very first Australia Pokémon VGC National on July 20th and 21st. Like the events in North America, Europe, and Asia, there will be three age divisions:

  • Juniors: Born in 2002 or later
  • Seniors: Born in 1998, 1999, 2000, or 2001
  • Masters: Born in 1997 or earlier

The top two finishers in each division will receive an invitation to play in the 2013 Pokémon World Championships in Vancouver, Canada along with flights and accommodations to the event. The exact format of the tournament is unknown at this time. For players who do not have a ticket to the now sold out PAX Australia, there will be a number of tournaments held in Australia with PAX Australia tickets and flights + accommodations up for grabs. These events — dubbed Battle Competitions — will be held at:

  • Perth (Supanova Pop Culture Expo) Sunday 30th June
  • Melbourne (Deakin Edge – Federation Square)  Saturday 6th July
  • Brisbane (Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre) Sunday 7th July
  • Adelaide (AVCon Anime and Video Game Convention) Saturday 13th July
  • Sydney (Luna Park) Sunday 14th July

Yes! You read that right! The first event is this coming weekend and the next two will be held the same weekend as the US National Championships. Each weekend leading up to PAX Australia will have an event.  A little short notice, but the entrance of Australia in the VGC circuit is exciting to see!

We hope our Australian readers can make these events and keep us updated! Will you be attending?

Is there anybody in this thread involved with the tournament organization or knows one of the tournament organizers?  I may be able to supply you with a hack check solution and the ability to register tournaments with bring-6-pick-4 and Team Preview, like the white boxes at most official VGC tournaments.

  2. cobalte says:

At the moment all we know is that it is Nintendo Australia doing these Qualifiers. It has been confirmed there will be a hack check at Nationals but unsure about Team Preview.
Also to clarify what FamousDeaf said that is the Top 50 in each age group, so 100 total tickets in Melbourne on Saturday up for grabs.

  3. kingofmars says:

Alright so who wants to guess what crazy bullshit Nintendo Australia is going to throw in next?

My money’s on them announcing 16 additional invites at Australian Nationals, with top 8 at nationals getting flights to worlds.

Though I admit it is slightly further out there then 50x the number of invites originally planned

  4. Chiron says:

Hopefully they will give Sydney some extra invites and flights because we are still fighting for first to get anything but honestly, like you said KoK, it’s a guessing game.

  5. Chiron says:

It didn’t; I just like to hope and dream :3

    UPDATE:
“We should also mention that this weekend, the top 50 placed competitors will win tickets to PAX for the day of their age division national championship.”

I am really surprised about that.

By that wording it seems they’ll do Nats all in one day but on different days per division. Doubt they’ll do it as big as LoL did at PAX Prime (that was ridiculous!) but it should be exciting!

Also pretty sure that’s 50 1 day passes. Not paid trips.

  7. Scott says:

I’m glad to see that like, Air Cutter, that image has already been beaten so far into the ground I don’t even have to worry about tripping over it any longer

I think an image response would’ve been more appropriate.

    Spoiler

On Topic:  It’s great to see Australia in the circuit, but just like the other countries on that side of the Pacific, we just have to hope the system gets better with time…

I hope they don’t give any other states more flights + accommodations, it would be very unfair on Perth if they did so :/

If you are going to the Brisbane Regionals My:

    Trainer Name: ZzamanN

    Age Division: Seniors

  11. Chiron says:

So Melbourne had there Qualifier today.
~ 107 ‘Seniors’ (Masters & Seniors combined) turned up. All of them received PAX tickets!
~ 25 Juniors turned up, they all receive PAX Tickets.
~ Our Boy ‘FamousDeaf’ top 4’d as well as another person with a somewhat inactive account here.
~ It was single elimination. You loss, you go home, but with PAX tickets. Originally if was set for Top 50 to get tickets but again, a last minute change occurred.

Perth – 1 PAX Ticket given away
Melbourne – 132 PAX Tickets given away. Of course PAX is in Melbourne but really, that’s a kinda large difference. At least they are making this event as large as possible in short notice. That is a good thing.

I’ll EDIT this post if something else comes up or I have to correct anything.

  12. FamousDeaf says:

    Update:
I made top 4 at Qualifier and other people who is inactive or never have NB account. It was single elimination. The winner used most Thundurus-T/Politoed/Kingdra/scarf Rotom-W. The runner used Togekiss/Terrakion/Thundurus/Breloom who best me in top 4, it was quite same strategy as Sejun Park’s National team. I think PokeAustralia website will update about Melbourne Qualifier with more detail.

  13. Firestorm says:

Yeah, good idea to give away the tickets at this event rather than Perth. You can’t give away more tickets than the fire code allows for and this way they aren’t giving away tickets that aren’t going to get used. Ensures more people will be able to go to PAX and the tournament.

Congrats on the top 4 finish FamousDeaf!

  14. FamousDeaf says:

    Thanks :D
Confirming with PAX national will have team preview with lock battle box, hack check and etc..

  15. cobalte says:

I had an unfortunate R1 loss knocking me out of the tournament getting counter-teamed with my last two Pokemon and bluffed a bit too, so I was a little worried about not being able to make PAX. Hopefully all will be well though, I think people who get tickets will hear on Monday or Tuesday it was mentioned.

Though it was really rough expecting double-elimination and getting single instead, I enjoyed being able to just watch all the battles with no pressure involved too.

  16. ZzamanN says:

I came first In Brisbane Regionals so I will be going to Nationals see you there

  17. ZzamanN says:

I won the Brisbane qualifyers/ regionals so I’ll see anyone going to Nationals 😀

  18. ZzamanN says:

whoops I Thought that the comments and the forums dont join together 😛 DERP

  19. cobalte says:

Nintendo Australia has just updated their website with the details of Nationals

    • Masters Division: Born in 1997 or earlier

    Saturday 20th July
    Registration 10am – 12pm
    Competition 12pm – 6pm

    • Junior Division: Born in 2002 or later

    Sunday 21st July
    Registration 10am – 11am
    Competition 11am – 2pm

    • Senior Division: Born in 1998, 1999, 2000, or 2001

    Sunday 21st July
    Registration 2pm – 3pm
    Competition 3pm – 6pm

Six hours to do the Masters competition is making me suspect that it will be single elimination

  20. ZzamanN says:

do you think that for the seniors?

  21. cobalte says:

I really couldn’t tell for Seniors. A point was brought up that they may be doing Swiss and Top Cut would be on the next day with those in it getting their names written down for entry but that really doesn’t make sense for the time allocated to the younger age divisions

  22. Garchomp says:

Man I’m so upset I can’t go to Nationals. I really hope they do it properly next year.

Also were prizes other than PAX tickets handed out at Melbourne, Brisbane or Adelaide?

  23. Firestorm says:

Could someone going to Nationals please make a new thread for it in the Play! Pokemon tournament forum? I’ll add the graphics and stuff later but will be nice to have that up there.

  24. FamousDeaf says:

I can do it but have no clue about what to do with it. I can make update on here or twitter (have my account but never use it for long time) for win/loss and Topcut.
