Contest: Win a Copy of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire have finally been released worldwide and our friends at Nintendo of Canada have been kind enough to provide us with a digital copy of each game again. As we have for the past two years, we’re going to celebrate the release of the new game with a giveaway! Like our previous contests, we’ll have three ways of entering: Twitter, Facebook, and our ever insightful forums. Much like the European Smash Bros. 3DS and Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire Demo contests we held during the fall, these codes are region locked. In this case, they are for North America so you must own a 3DS from North America to win.

Forum Entry

Simply respond to the comment thread for this article with a quick post about your introduction to the Pokémon Championship Series. Did someone tell you about it? Did you find out about it on Google? How was your first event? Let us know how you got involved with the scene!

Only your first post will count though you’re free to reply to other players to discuss your experiences! One entry will be randomly chosen from the thread and that player will win their choice of Pokémon Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire.

I first joined the mix in 2011 when I had no idea how deep the rabbit hole of Pokemon went. My friends and I decided to go to a spring regional because it was held in our state and I had never been to a Pokemon event of that scale. After a wonderfully humiliating loss, I decided that i would need to learn how to play properly before entering the stage of VGC. Fast forward to now and I’m in it for the long haul!

I first got into the Pokemon VGC when i found out about NJ regionals in 2011. I had no idea what I was doing and got haxed out by a Zoroark round 3 in Juniors. I then met Chalkey and JTK at RI regs that fall. chalkey gave me a team and I went 4-2 6th place in my first seniors event. I joined team magma and continued to train. The rest is history!

I played Stadium with my brothers all of the time when I was younger, but I never owned my own game until Pearl, after which I became immediately addicted. I remember my brother showing me youtube videos of the world championships back in 2010. I always thought it would be cool to go to one of the events, and after learning about EVs and practicing on Pokemon Battle Revolution for a year, I decided I wanted to go to a live event. The first time I attempted to go to a competition, I remember my friend’s grandparents drove us over to the competition two hours away, only to find that we were 33 people behind the last possible entry (there used to be a 512 person cap, I guess). A year later my brother urged me to go to the spring Philly regionals with him. I was armed with a trick room dusknoir/guard split shuckle/chansey gimmick. I did surprisingly well for my first time, placing 5th (I was in seniors though).

  4. I actually entered a regional event back in 2009 before I knew about evs or ivs or anything competitive actually. It was the year before they added masters I think. I lost in the first round to an explosion protect spammer.

  5. Well back in 2010, I watched the world finals with Ray winning it all. I got really excited and wanted to be up there in the finals of worlds, so I began playing in 2011 at the Texas Regional and I have been playing since.

  6. PM649 says:

I started out in 2010. I heard about vgc through my brother, and I was unsure about it first. But there was a shiny eevee distribution going on at the event, so we decided to use our really noobish ingame teams and go there. I ended up losing in r2, and my brother lost in r3.

  7. Simon says:

Smogon sucks, so I wanted to play a format that matters. Found VGC and never turned back.

  8. andrea says:

I found out about VGC in 2009 on… Serebii. I cringe to think that’s where I started my competitive Pokemon journey. I met mattj there, he introduced me to Smogon, and I attended my first competition in Indianapolis in 2010 where I made it through the LCQ to compete in the 2010 Nationals tournament. It’s been a fun journey!

  9. Back in 2010, I saw a VGC advertisement on the pokemon website. IN 2011, i attended by first regionals and managed to top 4. But I ended up getting demolished at nats.

  10. raptor says:

I watched 2013 Worlds online, then attended my first event in Philly shortly after. Was miserably underprepared, but I had so much fun that soon after I found this site and started concentrating on the VGC scene over Smogon’s tiers.

  11. Shaq says:

I started playing vgc in 2011 after seeing it advertised on Pokemon.com. I didn’t really get serious about it until recently though. Now I can’t stop!

  12. TeeJay says:

In 2006 I randomly visited the Pokemon website and noticed there was a JAA regional in 2 weeks in my hometown. Haven’t stopped participating since.

Oddly enough I was introduced to the pokemon scene through luck and randomness. I played wc3 competitively, and my team mates for wc3 got me back into pokemon, since I played yellow/red and gold before skipping to black 2/white 2. I found out about world championships when they managed to hit the front page of twitch, and I ended up watching pretty much every minute I could find of the 2013 world championships. I mostly attend online events since every regional is 6+ hours from me. However I’ve had some decent runs in those tournaments, but there have been a couple where I straight up brought the wrong team, such as my rain team that didn’t have a politoed…

  14. RevRush says:

Previously to going to any even I had been playing Pokemon since the early age of 5. I never really knew about the competitive aspect of it and the only experience of competitive play was Pokemon Showdown. After looking around for a site that would teach me the best strategies to play competitively, I stumbled upon Nugget Bridge and have been hooked ever since. I hope to get the chance to go to a Pokemon Championship soon!

  15. FlamingIce10 says:

I got into VGC when I was on google and I was looking for EV spreads for OU singles but then I saw VGC spreads. I got intrested in VGC and I made a team and started battleing with it!

  16. Wilson says:

I think I found out about Nugget Bridge while on smogon some time ago. My interest in VGC usually spiked whenever a new game came out, but also quickly waned, at least until XY. I’ve yet to attend an event, but more of my friends seem to be interested in VGC with the release of ORAS, so I may actually have a ride and be able to attend one in 2015. :D

  17. JRank says:

Found Serebii in 2009, eventually went to Smogon, read OmegaDonut’s warstories, went to Dallas in 2010, Pokemon took over my life.

  18. samorogu says:

After the fourth generation was out, I start to sneek out information of the game and started to know about iv’s and ev’s so eventually knew about smogon and serebii and eventually when the premier pokemon tournament reach Mexico in this year I participate there, unfortunately I couldn’t finished it because I had to leave early but I hope to participate in more tournaments now Pokemon has put its eyes in more countries than before.

  19. Markingdra says:

I began playing competitive Pokemon during the back end of 5th gen and only played the Smogon singles metagames. I would often (and still do) watch youtube videos of high level players commentating showdown, po, and Wi-fi battles to learn about prediction and team building (and entertainment of course). One day, I stumbled upon the the video of Aaron Zheng playing Ben Rothman during the APEX 2013 grand finals. I watched the whole video, and I was mesmerized by the fast-paced nature of the metagame. Ever since them, I have grown a love for the rule set and hope to attend my first event this year!

  20. LuxrayVGC says:

i started out with the card game when i was five, and slowly got more into it. never looked back since!

  21. darerick says:

I found Serebii in the Emerald days, trying to breed the best team for Battle Frontier. That’s when I first learned about IVs, EVs and fell into the Pokemon online rabbit hole and found out that people were thinking WAY more in-depth about the games than I thought anyone did. A few years after that, I gave up keeping up with the current generation, content to play thought Red, Sliver or Sapphire every once in a while. Halfway though 2012 I discovered really competitive play. I stumbled across YouTubers like Haydunn and Shofu and got my first glimpse of how strategic Pokemon could really be. I kept hearing/reading about VGC in other videos and comment sections. So I Googled it one day and Nugget Bridge was the first site there! I read article after article about the basics of the format and meta and eventually had to buy a DS and a copy of White. Little did I know, X and Y were soon to be announced and change the format. So for last Christmas I asked for a 3DS and a copy of Y. Who knew at 24 that would be what I wanted!! Fairly quickly I finished the story and then set about testing various teams on Showdown while waiting for the 2014 rule set to be announced. Once it was, I began to put together a team to take to the regionals in St. Louis. Breeding and training took way longer than I expected! Even after staying up until 4 or 5 in the morning before the tournament, unfortunately I missed out because I didn’t have all my Pokes up to level 50. I’m really hoping to go the the St. Louis regional this year and focus on having fun and maybe win a match or two!

  22. I learned about the Pokemon VGC when I googled pokemon and it shows Pokemon Showdown. I started playing the game and I quickly got into the competitive scene. I went to my first tournament which was the 2014 world championship last chance qualifier. I didnt do so well at the event, but I sure did have a lot of fun

  23. Yuber says:

I was introduced to the VGC format thanks to a facebook group that was trying to make Nintendo notice us (im from Latin America), i heard about the format before, but i`ve never exactly knew what it was about. Joyfully now we have official sanctioned tournaments and ive been going to them and getting pretty good results.

  24. JayDubb says:

I heard about the Pokemon Championship series by starting out on Smogon and Pokemon Showdown, and then becoming interested in VGC. Now, I’m a full-fledged competitive Pokemon Master!

  25. BattleArena says:

I was Smogon Ruleset player (as most beginners are). First I saw worlds 2012 replays on youtube and my jaw dropped to Cresselia skill swapping levitate to Heatran. It was beautiful and I was so excited just thinking of all the possibilities doubles opened up. I immediately began looking into participating and someday making it to worlds (this year, I’m coming :D). I also began a youtube channel in hopes of expanding the VGC Scene and showing people how much fun it can be and that pokemon dont need to be banned, just checked. 🙂

    regards,
    Sam.

  26. Zanyruki says:

I’ve played Pokemon since red/blue, and had done EV training in 3rd gen, got into IV breeding in 5th gen, but didn’t try to get into VGC until 6th gen because of how easy it was to breed 5IV pokes. After putting so much time into pokemon, I figured I should try to go to a competition, and so I went to the Houston 2014 Regionals.

  27. jimbogun says:

I first found nugget bridge through google, just looking for different things, trying to learn about pokemon. I’ve been playing since the release of X/Y. I really enjoyed the article about how to catch a perfect Kalos legendary bird. I haven’t been able to go to any events yet, but I’m looking forward to now.

  28. MattDaddy says:

I’ve been trying to play VGC for 5 years but only in the last 6 months have I gotten any good at it. Finding this site, battling strong people, and wanting to have a good time with others playing a game I love has kept this hobby alive for me.

  29. Fyrefli says:

I’ve been playing pokemon since 2007, when diamond and pearl came out. I found out about VGC in 2008 through pokemon.com and it was something that I was interested in participating in. One year later I went to the Philadelphia regionals with my team of Garchomp, Togekiss, Gallade, Electivire, Magnezone, and Rhyperior. Unfortunately I did not make the lottery but it was still cool to attend an official tournament and receive the free shiny Milotic. I’ve been playing competitively ever since then.

  30. Gringo says:

The story behind my involvement in VGC goes a little like this:

My brother and I had a nostalgia attack last year (after watching some singles/playthroughs) and we decided to each buy a 2DS (he got red, I got blue) and a copy of X/Y (he got Y, I got X). After we had our fill, I wanted to keep playing the game and stumbled upon some old Worlds Videos (one of which featured a poor rotom that couldn’t seem to hit will o wisp). Then one thing led to another and I wound up here from Cybertron’s YT channel (back when he was still recording without a capture card) when he was talking about speed tiers and the like.
