Contest: Win a Copy of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire have finally been released worldwide and our friends at Nintendo of Canada have been kind enough to provide us with a digital copy of each game again. As we have for the past two years, we’re going to celebrate the release of the new game with a giveaway! Like our previous contests, we’ll have three ways of entering: Twitter, Facebook, and our ever insightful forums. Much like the European Smash Bros. 3DS and Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire Demo contests we held during the fall, these codes are region locked. In this case, they are for North America so you must own a 3DS from North America to win.

Forum Entry

Simply respond to the comment thread for this article with a quick post about your introduction to the Pokémon Championship Series. Did someone tell you about it? Did you find out about it on Google? How was your first event? Let us know how you got involved with the scene!

Our comments section and forums are linked so you only need to reply once on either location and it will automatically sync. Only your first post will count though you’re free to reply to other players to discuss your experiences! One entry will be randomly chosen from the thread and that player will win their choice of Pokémon Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire.

Social Media Entry

The other copy of Pokémon Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire will be given away on Facebook and Twitter in a random draw. Enter both to increase your chance of winning!

Twitter

Simply follow @nuggetbridge and retweet the following tweet to be entered into the draw.

Facebook

Like Nugget Bridge and post an image in the comments for the contest post with your favourite Pokémon item you own — whether that’s a game, a plush, a card, or whatever else! If you’ve got a story to go with it, be sure to include that too!

Contest End

The contest will end at 11:59 PM on Sunday, December 7th, 2014 in Pacific Standard Time. One winner will be chosen randomly from all entries received in the comments thread for this article. Another winner will be chosen randomly from all entries received on either Facebook or Twitter. The winners will be contacted on Monday, December 8th, 2014.

I had played pokemon for many years, but this year was the first time that an official pokemon tournament(premier tournament) took place in my city (a friend told me), i dont have pokemon xy , so i have to wait until ORAS season begin to participate(never been on an official event).

I been playing Pokemon since the originals with Red and Blue.  I started playing in Pokemon Tournaments back in 2002 when they started having them at the Pokemon Center (now Nintendo World) in NYC.  Back then there was no VGC doubles and it was single battles fought with Gameboys with link cables.  Neutral Ground had some Pokemon TCG and video game tournaments as well.   I played the card game for a few sets when it first came out as well.  I played VGC when that started up much later like 2009.

I found out about VGC through Pokemon.com. I’d been playing smogon rules for a while, but wanted to go to a live tournament. Looking into it, I found that there was a Regional in Salt Lake City, about 4 hours away from where I live. My brother (Blues017) and I built up some teams and tried to figure out how to play doubles. The tournament was the 2013 spring regional, and neither of us knew quite what to expect. I had a rough round 1 loss, but my brother started strong with a win. I won the next few games, but took another loss in round 5 while my brother went undefeated during swiss. I won round 6 and played Alex Ogloza for round 7. He beat me, and I found out shortly afterward that my resistance caused him to bubble in to 9th place. I hung out with Alex the rest of the day and we watched my brother play Duy Ha during the first round of top cut. I’ve been hooked on VGC ever since.

I started playing Pokemon again when X and Y came out. Then I started watching shofu do wifi battles and he mentioned the VGC format, and I also heard it from Justin Flynn in one of his live streams. Eventually I started to play in the VGC format but I have yet to compete at an event.

Hey everyone, the winner of the contest was Artemis Flynn here on the forums and Scotty Stange on Facebook for the social media portion of the contest. That said, it’s awesome to hear people’s stories about how they got into the Pokémon Championship Series so please do continue to share your experiences with us in this thread!

As for myself, I hadn’t actually heard about it at all as the stuff on the 2008 Video Game Showdown and 2009 Video Game Championships were hidden away in one thread in the Competitive Pokemon Discussion equivalent on Smogon (at the time called Stark Mountain) and I’d quite playing Pokemon again in late 2007 or so. I still used to visit the site frequently as I was a moderator on some of the off-topic boards though and was always on #smogon. In 2010, a bunch of folks I would chat with frequently on IRC with were planning to go to the Seattle Regional and they invited me along because I live just a few hours away. Back in those days the ruleset and locations were revealed 3 weeks before the event. I decided to go for it and booked my Greyhound ticket after hearing how cheap the hotels we were getting were (am I the only one who missed when skarm worked at Marriott?)!

To prep I used NetBattle Supremacy because there was no in-game ladder. This is where I’d repeatedly run into battles with ryuzaki, Little Green Yoda, DeagleBeagle, Metabou, and other long-time Pokemon players. There were very few opponents in those days. I grabbed Pokemon from andrea and Newts who were kind enough to give me RNG’d Pokemon in return for nothing.

I actually started a new co-op job that week and was taking the last two days off due to prior commitments to volunteering at Game Developers Conference Canada, but then got the Friday off from that to travel down to Seattle. I met up with Arti by the Greyhound station for the first time and we took it down to Seattle together. Fish and skarm picked us up from the Greyhound station and we drove to the hotel to meet up with makiri, Huy, and Duy. At the actual competition the next day I won Round 1 against someone who clearly didn’t know what they were doing then in R2 lost to HagridTwin. That was the end of that as it was Single Elimination back then. I did end up meeting Chinese Dood, caffwin, and I guess also Team Rocket Elite at the event later. I didn’t meet feathers though. Blissey.

The experience itself was amazing and almost immediately after that I joined Huy and makiri in really pushing out the quality of VGC coverage on Smogon. The sub-forum was made and we increased the visibility of the circuit as much as we could with a growing list of others before coming to the conclusion  a few years later that we could do a better job of it with a dedicated site and made Nugget Bridge.

My brother told me about VGC during B2W2 times and we went to a regional. Been hooked ever since.

I read ZOGS world post, got tutored by Enosh, and quit singles forever.

Like most here I too have been playing since the R/B/Y days on the old Gameboy. I just happened to stumble on competitive Pokemon I think from Googling or going on Pokemon.com. Competitively I went to a the Georgia Regional just about every year since 2010. I used it as a family road trip from North Carolina we would see different places along the way and spend a few extra days around Georgia. So I just did it as something fun to do with Pokemon and didn’t get serious about it till I moved back to AZ in 2013 and been to a bunch since, top cutting a few, getting a few good placements here and there, and this season working on CP.

  9. I heard about a PC in May and deciced to check it out after being a tcg player

lost out on Top Cut because of resistance
