Japanese Players to Battle for Chance to Play Rizzo & Morimoto at Pokémon Game Show

The first ever Pokémon Game Show is happening this weekend in Tokyo and The Pokémon Company has something really interesting set up for competitive players. A special battle arena will be set up and battlers will be able to play each other for the chance to play one of many special guests that have been lined up for the weekend — including 2010 – 2012 World Champion Ray Rizzo (Ray). The other guests have impressive resumes as well, with Shigeki Morimoto, Battle Director at Game Freak, being the most alluring. Players will also be able to battle the staff of popular Sunday morning children’s show Pokémon Smash. To play these stars, trainers will need to win three battles against their peers to be brought up to the big stage. There will be two age divisions: one for elementary age players (same as the CoroCoro Cup) and one for all ages.

Aside from the battle competition, announcements for the video game, trading card game, and anime are all expected. This will also be the first event that Pokémon X and Y will be playable. The demo will feature Mega Evolutions so we should have more information on how it works by the end of the weekend. Stay tuned to our Twitter account for any updates we get!

I was chatting with Ray about this a lot right after they invited him and we were all pretty excited both for him because he got the trip and also because it’s an interesting gesture that they would fly him over there to use as one of the celebs. I’m sure the expense is probably pocket change relative to the rest of the enterprise, but kind of heartening that the Japanese branch of Pokemon viewed the VGC champion as enough of a marketing tool to be worth sending over. Lots of good news lately.

I hope they stream this event because this would be absolutely incredible to see.

And judging from this marketing strategy, I would say Ray Rizzo might finally be getting the international exposure he claimed he never had (at least according to his interview on the Pokemon YouTube channel, where he said nobody recognizes him while he walks through the streets).

    Streaming?

I don’t think anybody is doubting that Ray Rizzo would be a pretty fearsome opponent on the big screen, but something I’m actually interested to see is how well Morimoto plays. Remember that none of the official employees of the Pokemon games are allowed to play in our tournaments, so he may very well be a real competitor!

With the Pokémon Smash staff being in it as well and lack of “serious competition”, I expect them all to be playing some “bad” team. Would definitely like to watch though.

Morimoto was weak in-game, the Leftovers guy beside him was much more of a challenge.
