Results from the 2013 Italy and Korea Pokémon National Championships

The last two weekends saw two separate National Championships on two different continents. On May 5th, 2013 in Seoul, the Korean National Championships determined the champions that would be sent to Vancouver, Canada for the 2013 Pokémon World Championships this August. A 64 person single elimination tournament was held in each age division and the last remaining player in each received an invite and trip to the World Championships. These players are:

  • Masters: Sejun Park
  • Seniors: “Alice”
  • Juniors: Do Heun Kwon

Just one week later, the 2013 European Video Game Championship Series kicked off in Milan with the VGC ’13 Italy National Championship. For the first time, Europe saw a swiss tournament with a best-of-three single elimination top cut. Players were very excited to finally have a format that helped compensate for the variability in the game. How did things play out?

I think you’re trying a little too hard here to validate luck-based strategies in hopes of screwing over your opponent who outplay you. Yes, swagger can get you out of a tight spot if the RNG is in your favor, but really using it to that degree and just hoping that both your opponents mons sit there hitting themselves so you can get a win and say “GG outplayed” is a bit ridiculous. Obviously Ray is more than “crazy good,” but I think the reason the others have brought him up is because he uses swagger, not to hopefully screw someone over with RNG, but to create win conditions for Metagross to yams on things at +2. Clearly para-fusion-rockslide-flinch spam is a very potent strategy, but i’m fairly certain top level players build teams around knowing that RNG exists, but never really wanting to RELY on it to win their matches.

Dude… There’s this old but awesome article called “Moves Like Swagger” which I definitely think you should read. I NEVER would rely on swagger to win me a match but I think it is an excellent move that can be used for both attack and boosting like you mentioned Ray does. I even see some more professional players using it a bit (yes, I’m talking to YOU Cybertron, Mr. I hate everything Recon X posts and like everybody who disses what he posts, yet I have a Liepard knowing swagger and love using it.)  Either way swagger is an awesome move. Look, we even had Sapphire Birch make a swagger appreciation thread a while ago.

Peng is stoopid, I used Swagger to nab KOes with Foul Play more than I used it to get the confusion

  3. Cybertron says:

Also Recon X I literally posted ONE comment in response to your post which seemed condrsending and unnecessary, please grow up

This is why I dislike so many yamsing seniors

    Say what?

Really? Don’t you have something better to do than hate on me? I already explained my comment some time ago. I’m not trying to be a jerk but just sayin’…..

  5. Cybertron says:

Yes because constructive criticism = hate

Foul play does 2x damage after a swagger

  6. Recon X says:

Ok, I get your foul play strategy. I just wondered why you decided to criticize my comment in particular. It’s not like it’s that insulting. Maybe I wasn’t clear about a few things but I didn’t intend to piss anyone off.

  7. bearsfan092 says:

Both of you knock it off.

Besides Recon, Birch’s Swagger appreciation thread is sarcastic.

  8. Cybertron says:

Maybe because it was the only negative post in the entire thread which had some ridiculous claims, also excuse me for thinking it was targeted at Jordi and his Perish Trap team since you wrote your comment literally right after his Top 4 finish, and sorry I didn’t know anyone who tried to use perish trap is just a bad Wolfe clone

Please realize hate and constructive criticism are not the same thing, I made legitimate claims to statements I (and evidently many others) did not agree with, we’re just trying to help you become a better poster

  9. Recon X says:

Okay, sorry about all this. I’m not not trying to be a baby and make a big thing over the situation. Your response just threw me off a bit. Glad I got to meet a champ like you even if it was online.

There’s a reason Cybertron has so many profile dislikes.

Why do you have this bad habit of shifting your opinion after you get caught with your pants down? Correct me if i’m wrong, but in your previous post, the only thing you mentioned when suggesting swagger as a move slot is its ability to confuse and RNG the yams out of the opponent and that priority swagger is great incase they want extra salt in thier wounds. If you had mentioned that swaggering your own mons that hold lum to get +2 as a viable strategy as opposed to what you suggested then this probably wouldn’t have happened.

I’m confused why you chose to attack cybertron, or turn this post into an anti-cybertron thread (although from the responses and likes people don’t seem to think that’s a bad thing) while trying to say that cybertron is an anti-recon X conspirator. I doubt anyone hates you, yet, but if you continue to flaunt your opinions in a way that gives others the idea that you think you’re always right then there’s not much I can suggest to help you.

I don’t think I got the chance to properly congradulate the winners of both tournaments. Cheers to you guys for a well deserved victory. Hopefully Guam will have a chance for a live event in the future.

  13. , Birch’s Swagger appreciation thread is sarcastic.

No it was definitely not sarcastic.

I think swagger is an amazing move that deserves praise.

while most of my love for swagger comes from enjoying people rage about swagger as if luck isn’t part of the game I do think its a great move for a game like pokemon.

This thread needs more Swagger :P

I don’t shift my opinion. I mentioned ONE reason why swagger is good, and it doesn’t mean you have to try and use it to make me look bad. If you think exploiting the game’s natural RNG is a bad thing, then I don’t know what else to say to you. A good player uses every trick and advantage in the game to win. Lastly, I’m not anti-Cybertron, I just got a little indignant over his post in response. By the way… why do you hunt down everything I post and contradict it? Are you annoyed with me or just trying to give me advice?

European VGC is clearly in a transition phase and its bound to be shaky the first year – I’m not saying don’t be critical of the events but can we try and at least keep it constructive. TPCi needs to know what worked just as much as what didn’t, and most of the posts I’ve seen in the feedback thread are just slating the organisation and delays, and almost demanding a bigger top cut. I’ve yet to see any comments on whether the actual venue / city was a good location in particular, including how accessible it was by public transport, any nearby parking for anyone who drove, what the range of lunch options (if any) was like etc.

As I said, the organization did it terrible the first day but really good the second day. I appreciate the small steps TPCI is doing but removing the two best events by far in Europe to run events like this… is a shame. The venue was great, the city not that great. Paris outclasses Milan in every possible way and is more centric, I’d have removed the Italian VGC instead of the French one. The only positive think of the event was the venue and the 2nd day of the competition. So we have lost more than we have won. If they do properly in the last 2 events maybe it evens what we have lost and I really hope this year to be a transition year, they have messed up some things like 8 spots for juniors and 4 for masters and seniors. Only 14 juniors showed up….

btw I messed last post, it was a quote till “was like etc.”

I like how more of the higher level players are either not contributing their losses to hax or showing examples of when they were haxed and won (like Matty).  I feel like at a certain level playing this game it turns into a question of am I going to cave after missing a move, or am I going to keep a clear mind and come back from this.  Matty and Sejun winning their nationals again is good proof that you can most likely come back from a haxy game (or be more prepared for it in the first place) and still do well in events even with that.  Sejun and Matty are both amazing players, congratulations on winning your respective nationals (AGAIN!!!) and I hope to see you at worlds myself :P.  The perish trap team that won sounds really cool as well, it’s always nice to see something like that doing well, and looking into it more I like the reliability of that kind of team archetype where you (to the best of my knowledge) are not relying on a lot of innacurate moves and just relying and bulk and switchins to kill your opponents pokemon.  Something I certainly want to look into although I tend to prefer hyperoffensive teams in the style that Randy has made so popular more so I probably won’t have the balls to use it in an actual event.  Once again great job to everyone!

Also, for what it’s worth on the swagger discussion, I feel that in general it’s good to have something with Lum Berry, Sub, Safeguard, Taunt, anything like that on your team to keep it from happening in the firstplace.  I would not rely on it myself, but I can see why some newer players, or maybe players who aren’t as confident in their teams or so forth (I’m really trying hard not to offend anyone), could rely on it, because it can turn a losing game into a game with slightly sub 50 odds of you coming back due to miss chance.  I wouldn’t use it myself though.
