Pokémon 2013 Korean National Championships

The 2013 Korean National Championships will take place this weekend with the Trading Card Game event on Saturday and Video Game Championships on Sunday. Unlike the European and North American events, the VGC ’13 Korean National Championship is an invite-only event featuring 64 players. 44 players were selected from the three International Challenges that were held over the Nintendo WiFi Connection this year and the final 20 will be selected through a special Last Chance Qualifier this weekend. Those who do not have an invite to the National Championships will be asked to play battles from 9AM to Noon with the 20 people with the most wins moving onto the main event on Sunday.

This is probably an amazingly stupid question, but:

Those who do not have an invite to the National Championships will be asked to play battles from 9AM to Noon with the 20 people with the most wins moving onto the main event on Sunday.

The fact this is timed and the use of the phrase “most wins” almost makes it sound like a speed tournament where you’re trying to complete the most matches in a set time period (kinda like a wifi tournament).  Ordinarily, I’d assume it’s Swiss with the top 20 seeds moving on.  Which one is correct?

  2. SoulSurvivor says:

    “Only champion gets invite”

Every single time ;_;. Can’t they at least have top2 get invites because it kinda sucks how under represented they are right now, not to mention they actually have been performing pretty well at worlds while being limited to 1 player in each division(2 in masters last year counting sejun). Hopefully Kore can get more invites in the following years

  3. MrFox says:

Wow, only the champion again.  That really sucks, I’d love to see more of a Korean representation next year at worlds :/.

  4. PrettyLittleLiar says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if it was most wins in 3 hours. That is similar to the Japanese TCG battle carnival method of qualifying.

I am most excited for the fact that any slightly unorthodox team that is used to moderate success is going to be stolen by “good” American players, who will then proceed to talk about how the Koreans are so good at teambuilding.

  5. foodking2win says:

i feel that this is so unfair for all those korean playres that try and play so well and only are competing for 1 spot at worlds i thought they would at least increase their spots and make this the biggest world championship ever but alas poor korea

  6. MrFox says:

Does anyone know how to find videos from this once it happens?

  7. Scott says:

    Cybertron knows!

The way it was worded when Aaron asked the Korean players was the speed tournament thing. It would be similar to the Japanese TCG qualification method like Matt mentions above.

In other news, sun rises today.

    Dude’s amazingly consistent.  Congratulations Sejun!

  11. Scott says:

How good is the group of 4 officially qualified for Worlds right now? I still find it really depressing people like Cheol Hwan and Wonseok miss out because of how few spots Korea gets, but it just wouldn’t feel like Worlds without Sejun… good to see he took care of business and excited to see what he comes up with.

  12. R Inanimate says:

Curious to see what sort of team that he ran this time.
Although it isn’t impossible for him to lose, this was the most expected outcome. I think he normally places about 100 points higher than the next Korean Player in the Wi-Fi tourneys.
    Congrats to 세준.

  13. Scott says:

thundi/breloom/liepard/terrakion/cresselia/volcarona, so likely not a big deviation from what we’ve seen

  14. MrFox says:

    SEJUN!

Can’t wait to see you at nats again, congrats on another win :D!

Also, Scott, how do you know his team?  I searched for the finals on youtube and got nothing, although I assume they’re in Korean so they may be up, I don’t know.

  15. woopahking says:

HE DIDN’T USE BISHARP :o THAT’S LIKE HIS TRADEMARK POKEMON.

  16. Cybertron says:

he posted a picture of his team on twitter

  17. Hurricane says:

    What’s Sejun’s Twitter?

  18. SoulSurvivor says:

Its interesting to note how he didn’t use a steel type Pokemon. Guess the draco meteor scare is going down. Come to think of it, at worlds bisharp wasn’t a dm sponge like every other steel type coming into the event.

  19. Hurricane says:

His team looks like Cybertron’s regs team…

  20. Cybertron says:

His team looks like Cybertron’s regs team…

I made my Regionals based off his team (which he showcased in the JPN vs. KOR friendly)

  21. Hurricane says:

I made my Regionals based off his team (which he showcased in the JPN vs. KOR friendly)

    oh ok lol

  22. SoulSurvivor says:

Was jpn vs kor ever uploaded or are they all on pokecheck?

  23. kingofmars says:

So the people officially qualified for worlds in the masters division are:
Sejun, Ray, Wolfe, Toler and Jaime, with Zach almost being guaranteed to make worlds

  24. Javier8899e says:

Has the results come from the Korean nationals championships yet?

  25. woopahking says:

Does anyone know who won the juniors and seniors?

  26. Cybertron says:

No idea on names. Based off FB pictures though looks like there actually was a Seniors Division this year (unlike past years where Seniors/Masters was combined) so there will be three Korean players at Vancouver, one for each division.

  27. tlyee61 says:

can anybody translate / know what this screen is? (taken from sejun’s twitter)

It says “King of Medalist”. That’s the same as the Japanese name for the medal you get when you get every other medal. The top right of the image also shows that the person has 255/255 medal. That’s pretty impressive.
