Results from the VGC ’15 Indiana and NorCal Regional Championships

The final regionals of the format are over and we’ve got the results. There is no reason to hold anything back with no events larger than a Premier Challenge left and we’ll have teams from these players later this week! There were 243 Masters and 19 Juniors in Ft. Wayne. San Jose saw 206 Masters, 47 Seniors, and 6 Juniors. Here are the players who made the cut this weekend:

    Isn’t it 256 for top 16?

    227 is Top 16.

  4. CarsFan2001 says:

Competed. Had a great time. Could had done better though.

  5. Mittens says:

I had a great time and took 11th place in Indiana. Not gonna lie, I am frustrated I was robbed of a place in top cut.

  6. Mystery says:

Man, how much further down am I on the IN standings? >:[ I was 6-2 as well, my opp win% must’ve been garbage.

  7. Bopper says:

First boiler room win of the season, with many more to come. Congrats Mancuso! And of course congrats to everybody else for top cutting.

  8. Crow says:

Mancuso won Ft. Wayne? I could’ve sworn I’ve only been seeing the TO/TPCi rep won.

  9. kingdjk says:

Super good time in San Jose, and I’m also super happy about 3rd place. Pretty good for my first tournament as a master. I’m happy I got to play on stream and actually win, even it wasn’t the most honorable victory. GGs to everyone I played.

  10. captain feathersword says:

Had a great time at San Jose went 6-2 for 14th place. Congrats to all the people who top cut.

  11. 227 is Top 16. If you don’t do that, then x-1 can miss cut (which is what happened in Indiana).

I don’t know how top cuts are supposed to be handled in regards to starting number of players and number of players after drops, but there were 243 on the attendance sheet but only 220 on the results, which does drop it below the requisite 227.

It is determined by the number of players at the beginning of the tournament (before late entrants).

  13. bgt says:

The same exact thing happened with Houston.  We had like 200+ players and was only Top 8.

No it didn’t. You had 206 players. That is less than 227 and thus a Top 8.

  15. Arch says:

6-2 tiebreaks put me at 25th for ft wayne. A judge I spoke with after the event attributed it to miscommunication. Pretty stupid reason for a 7-1 to bubble out of top cut. Still was a great time though.

  16. TwiddleDee says:

Man, I really wonder what Indiana would have looked like if they had top 16. Would have liked to see how Ashton and Collin pulled out, and I feel really bad for Kyle in 9th place. That’s honestly infuriating for me, so I can’t even imagine how he feels.

  17. Scott says:

While I’m still pretty irritated by how the tournament ran in Indiana and sad I didn’t get to see how some people in the 9-16 range like Kamaal, Kyle, and Collin would have done in top cut, I was really happy for a bunch of the people I know who actually make top cut in Indiana so I’m now going to gush.

While I’m not super close with any of them, I always tend to root for the other denizens of Michigan, especially since we see each other around at events a bit more these days. I keep a pretty close eye on how people like Andykins, Jonathan, Keegan, and Maurice are doing in particular, so it was cool at least a couple of them rose above Bizarre Tournament Issues: The Regional and made it into cut. Andykins and Reese making it in particular is pretty fun for me since I played Maurice about a million times in 2013, and with him taking a year off in 2014 I ended up playing Andykins a million times instead. If I was going to have a bad event (which I deserved after not really prepping or caring about the event at all), it was nice to see both of my Michigan rivals in top cut. I have to admit I found it absolutely hilarious that the round 8 pairdown was Maurice at 6-1 vs me at 5-2 after I knocked him out of Ft Wayne and Nats in 2013, but I’m kind of glad he beat me this time, and organically too, even though I’d probably have conceded if I won. I didn’t put much effort into the tournament this time and I know he said he was going hard this year, so it’s kind of cool to have him finally get his win against me and make cut for it at a time when he deserved it more.

A few people in cut I know were kind of shaking monkeys and disproving doubters, too. Toler’s obviously had a rough go lately, and while he wasn’t very happy with just top 8, it’s nice to see him at 7-1 again. Pball gets some crap about Premier Challenges from us (probably deservedly so), but he’s really put up with Regionals so far this year, so good for him. It was also nice to see Amarillo shake his never-make-Regionals-top-cut thing, too. While he is promoting a playstyle I would prefer didn’t exist, it does, so I’m still glad he managed to get in the cut this time since I know it meant a lot to him to pull that off.

Finally, cool to see Mancuso win. I remember meeting him during cut last year and thinking he seemed pretty starstruck by the whole experience. I, at least, definitely expect to see him in cuts nowdays, amazing how far he’s come in a year. Really impressive.

  18. Super proud of my boy for his 1st place wins in both the Saturday premier challenge and the Fort Wayne regional :D

Congratulations to Phillip. I’ve loved watching post with people helping teach him Pokemon, and am excited to go down that path with my brother soon.

    Also, cutting 8 was dumb.

  20. Mystery says:

Just for posterity, and posting it where more than a handful of people on IRC sees it, if I had beat Amarillo final round of Swiss I would’ve been the X-1 that bubbled anyway. :[

  21. Benzo says:

Congratulations to the winners at Norcal today- saw some great matches and great skill levels from all 3 divisions- and thanks to all yall who came out and did their best!

  25. MrGX says:

Wow. Tough timer, huh? Congratz to the top cuts! Hoping to join myself oneday!

  26. TheGutsyConk says:

I went to the San Jose reigonals and had a damn good time. I placed 48 out of 204, which is A LOT better than I thiugh I’d do. I could have done better, but 2 out of my three losses where from Hax, and Generic OP teams getting in my way. But I can’t conplain about the Hax, it’s part of the game. But my Final match, I lost fair and square that is for sure. My oppenet, I think his name is Ansle, is just better than I am (not surprising). It was a close match, I just made some bad calls and he went with it. He has a strong team and was able to play me like a fiddle. Major props to him.

Ah, ok, that makes sense now.  For some reason i thought the attendance was higher than that.  Sorry about that.

I’m pretty happy about my performance since my last event not counting premier challenges was the LCQ.  My Sableye was definitely my MVP and was used in nearly all battles.  Between burning opponents and lowering their Special Attack with Snarl it was getting the job done.  My last round the person I was facing had a blinking red 3ds and I had the option of allowing us to sit at an outlet.  I had come to play so I agreed to it.  I’d rather get a pure win instead of one on a technicality.

I finished in 19th with a 6-2 record.  A couple others from MN did really well.
