First VGC ’14 Regional Date and Locations Revealed (Updated)

Players who aren’t able to make it out to the 2013 Pokémon World Championships might already be looking towards the 2013 – 2014 season. The Premier Tournament Organizers seem to be on the same train of thought because a little bit of digging on the Pokémon website reveals that three locations have already booked their venues and have event details up! The first Regional of the VGC ’14 season will happen on October 27th, 2013. This date is just over two weeks after the release of Pokémon X and Pokémon Y.

Update: It looks like we’re going to get at least two dates for the fall as the NorCal Regional will be taking place on October 13th, 2013 — one day after the release of Pokémon X and Y. Event locations known so far are:

October 13th, 2013

Pleasanton, California

Alameda County Fairgrounds (Building C)
4501 Pleasanton Avenue
94566

October 27th, 2013

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania Convention Center (Terrace Ballroom)
1101 Arch Street
19107

Ft. Wayne, Indiana

Grand Wayne Center Anthony Wayne Ballroom
120 West Jefferson Boulevard
46802

Houston, Texas

Hilton Houston North
12400 Greenspoint Drive
77060

If we have fifteen locations split across three seasons like the current season, we still have one location left. All four of these areas also hosted Regional Championships in the fall last year. If the same pattern holds, the last event will be in Toronto.

Slightly butthurt that Fall is using BW2, since I was hoping to try out some XY stuff, but on the other hand, at least I can use this time to actually craft a good team.

  2. IceKingz says:

Honesty I wish they’d just plop over to X/Y.  I hate how Fall has recently become a filler tournament.  I mean if it’s the start of the VGC 14 season, which will most likely be a metagame under X/Y why not have the first tournament begin that way?  Sure there will be tons of rushing problems involving making teams and not being able to RNG, etc etc but at the same time it makes it a more fun gateway tournament into the season.  Rather than a tacked on tournament using a very old and stale rule set.

  3. Scott says:

I mean the answer here is pretty obvious, right? I think most people are honing in on the lesser problem, which is that the quality of competition would be lower so close after a game’s release. The more important problem is that potential participants may not have purchased the game or console yet and that even players who have it may be turned off by having to rush to put a team together and that would almost certainly hurt attendance more than using a ruleset people are a little tired of (and that has no future). Not much of a decision to make on TPCI’s end, I’d think.

  4. If they’re holding a Norcal regional at that time again, I might actually go to a live event. The last time it swung around Norcal it was B/W only and I skipped B/W in lieu of B2/W2. Hoping we get a fresh ruleset though – ubers doubles, you know you want it!

  5. Pd0nZ says:

I wish they would do Northern NJ/NYC, but Philly is fine. The location is pretty nice, and I guess it meets the needs of the organizers, as this is the 3rd time in 18 months that they are going back to the Philly location. Looking forward to giving it another shot. Cya guys on October 27th.

Oh, and regardless of whether or not I play well enough to Top 8 there again, let’s make sure Philly’s Top 8 gets a lunch break, haha. (The chips were good, but I would have loved the time to run to Reading Market or McDonalds or something.)

  6. Firestorm says:

Actually ending off BW2 with a GS Cup Regional would be pretty awesome.

  7. Braverius says:

Time to figure out how to get to Houston! It’s pretty convenient anyways since I have to visit a college in Dallas around that time.

And let’s be honest, there’s a lot more awesome things to do in Texas than in FORT WAYNE.

  8. Pre-Regionals party in Houston at my house. It’s going all kinds of down.

This was posted 10 days ago. Kim is a big PTO in Cali so I have no reason not to believe him, but the dates are funny compared to the other dates we currently have so we’ll see I guess.

  10. bearsfan092 says:

Okay now I’m confused.  If the dates are all the same, that does bring it into conflict with Big House.   I guess I’d prioritize Pokemon over Melee, but dang…  Hoping we get this sorted out soon.

it says on pokemon.com that there are 4 regional dates listed so far worth checking

I probably just skimmed over it, but can you link me to where it says that?

    norcal lesgoooooooooooooooooo

also I like the XY race to the first gym side event :D

  15. shinryu says:

Meh, normally I’d be happy for a chance to go to NorCal regionals, but that date…ugh…I get that it works since it’s the holiday, but it’s also why I already have a vacation planned previously for that reason on that weekend lol.

Oh well, always wherever SoCal will be again I guess. Assuming they keep the basic schedule/pattern intact, should be looking at one of the first ones to use X&Y.

  16. Scott says:

    Multiple date thing is interesting.

Party in Cali that weekend, anybody??

  17. Firestorm says:

Interesting. Maybe we’ll have enough dates to use a best finish limit this season?

  18. feathers says:

so like if there are regionals in both cali and toronto in october then i might go to both of them.

pokemon please tell me more places and dates so i can figure out how to spend money faster

  19. Calm Lava says:

Man I hope there’s not separate dates, that just means the people with the most money get to pound out 2 (or more?) regionals which is dumb especially if they’re switching to this new system

  20. Mosquito says:

I think Philadelphia is a great location for Northeast Regionals (a really central location, but I still wish we had a NY Regional). Hopefully they give us a lunch break…. I noticed Firestorm edited the article to remove the whole “B2W2 confirmed”. Though it would be fun to use X & Y, it would be insane to do so in two weeks, espcially with a global release and the fact that it’s a new generation, not like the one month after Platinum for Japan, and then Europe used D/P in 2009 because one week wasn’t enough… same with BW in Fall 2012-2013.

If the dates are separate, I agree with Calm Lava. That gives a distinct advantage to those with more money (whoever can fly to Cali/lives in Cali and flies to other Regionals). It’s hard enough going to three Regionals in different seasons…. I think separate dates should come with more Regionals before making NorCal a separate date…

  21. Cybertron says:

I expect that they’ll add the best limits finish like Rushan mentioned so only your best three Regional finishes are counted. Of course that’s not stopping anyone from playing in all four but I envy your time, money, and resources if you do lol

  22. Firestorm says:

It is BW2. With the California date it isn’t even two weeks now. It’s one day :P

  23. Calm Lava says:

I hope best finish limits aren’t added, because that will probably mean this isn’t the only time multiple dates are added.

WE MIGHT AS WELL GO BACK TO THE OLD REGIONALS SYSTEM

  24. Firestorm says:

Best Finish Limit is way better than “be available and willing to travel on the only three dates we have available or lose your invite.”

  25. Technoz says:

Ugh, not looking likely that I will be able to make the fall regs.:(

  26. araluen7 says:

Interesting. Maybe we’ll have enough dates to use a best finish limit this season?

Uhm, can you explain to me what this even is? Does that mean that if we Top 4 somewhere, then completely blow the next event, that the second event won’t even be counted? I mean, how would that even go with CP into the equation. I’m sorry, I just don’t understand, not trying to be stupid on purpose :(

  27. Scott says:

    See TCG FAQ: External

    What are Best Finish Limits?

To provide a more-even playing field for the largest number of competitors worldwide, the Organized Play team has instituted Best Finish Limits. This means that during an event series, only your Best X (defined below) finishes will count towards your final Championship Points total.

For example, the Best Finish Limit for Battle Roads is 6. If a player participates in 6 Battle Road Autumn events and 5 Battle Road Spring events, only the top 6 of the player’s 11 Battle Roads finishes will count toward his or her final Championship Points total.

  28. SoulSurvivor says:

If we can get a NY/NJ regional(or anywhere northeast) as a different date from Philly I would be a happy camper. Though It irks me we might be playing in the same format for 1 more regional. Hoping we can finally get a 5th gen ubers vgc.

  29. Firestorm says:

After two years you should already know what the other Eastern regionals will be… VA area and RI/MA. It won’t be NY/NJ.

  30. SoulSurvivor says:

Yeah I know already( a man can dream right ;_; ). Maybe we might get 3 regionals for each date expanding slightly from 15 regionals to 18.
