Nintendo UK Presents Pokémon Winter Championships

Nintendo UK is hosting a Pokémon Championships series across the UK, spanning over the rest of November and early December. We can only apologise for any short notice, the information was only recently released. There will be multiple qualifiers held around the UK, which are fan-run events organised by StreetPass Groups that you may have heard of. The finals, which is an official Nintendo UK run event, will be held in London, on an as of yet unknown date and venue.

To qualify for the finals in London, you must reach the top 3 in one of the qualifiers. Unfortunately, the rules do slightly differ from event to event. All will use Double Battle and Flat Battle Rules, however, some will limit you to the Kalos Dex only, while others may allow you to use anything you can catch in X & Y right now. This is noted on the section for each event as either Kalos Only or National Dex. Prizes will also differ for each tournament, though for the most-part, eShop Vouchers, plushies, and other Nintendo merchandise are likely.

As of right now, we are to assume that these invitations to the finals do not include a travel award, so you’ll have to pay your own way there if you qualify. We will also have to note, that these events are not in conjunction with The Pokémon Company International’s Video Game Championship Series, so you do not have to worry about missing out on Championship Points.

This post will be updated we hear about more events. Continue onto the forum thread where we have an updated list of winners and qualified players!

Congratulations Toquill for winning twenty years’ worth of Pokemon Bank!

    It’s 112 years lol where’d you get 20 from…

GREAT EVENT! I think I’ll write a thing on it tomorrow :P

  2. Havak says:

    Was pretty awesome :)

Sadly, I was really late. Our coach drivers took us to the wrong place twice, there was loads of traffic, and we had to try and find our own way there walking. Eventually got there and had to play Zog in Round One in what was a pretty close game. Still think I could have won it without a flinch (even though I got one earlier on that Zog thinks mattered) but I’ll have to re-watch it first! Haha. It was really unlucky, as I think my team was more suited to facing most of the other players, but Zog was using more unconventional mons too! But ah well, I still had a good time.

Was so tired and hungry on the day, only got a small amount of pizza and didn’t get home until after midnight after being up since around 5am. Just collapsed on my bed when I got in and that was that! The goodiebags for all entrants were pretty cool to be honest though and I have about £100 Nintendo eShop Credit myself to use now!

    Congratulations to Brandon!

Basically everything that Chris said. lol

Won round one after a while with me and my opponent (sorry I can’t remember your name) were just trying to find a way to break through eachother’s teams, could have gone either way though, but Mawile won the match for me.

Lost in round two (why am I not good with names? XD ) , after that battle, I learned that I needed a better way to deal with Rotom-W instead of just burning it, I was screaming on the inside when I found out it was RestoChesto, time to bring back Amoonguss or do a bit of team changes.

Despite having only giving Scrafty Quick Guard, it definatly serverd it’s purpose over Detect, protecting it from Talonflame Brave Bird and protecting Chandelure from Sucker Punch aswell as blocking Prankster moves.

Outside of battles though, I had a great time, meeting up with most people again from UK Nationals such as Christopher (Koryo), Lee (Osirus), Ben (Kyriakou), Joe (WhiteAfroKing92), Chris (Havak), Sam, Barry and others. And most importantly, congrats to Brendan (Toquill) for winning the tournament! Your are officially the newest Scrub!

100 dollar Eshop credit divided by 5

  5. Bumped my account out of inactivity to say congrats Brendan on your well deserved victory.

Both of the people playing in the final were probably two of the most underrated battlers on the competitive scene. It was nice to see a tourney where the favourites didn’t have it in the bag!

Had an excellent day myself too. Lost in the first round after winning my qualifiers due to a complete failure on my part to recognise a Toxic/Burn Stall team (honestly, I’ve never seen one in VGC before even with my excessive play-testing :P). Even with the loss, two of my good friends won the Cosplay competition and I socialised with plenty of people from the VGC servers throughout the day (Jake, Brendan, even met Baz in passing!) Nintendo need to do something like this every season.

  6. Juiceball says:

Yesterday was amazing fun, well worth coming from Ireland for it, even if my surname caused some trouble for the host :P

Lost in round 3 to Ben Neville, good game to that, and congratulations to Brandon for coming 1st :)

  7. Baz Anderson says:

Great event, it’s nice that Nintendo put this mini series on for us.

I think my final placing was 12th, which is probably fair for the team I used. I only knew I was going the weekend before this one, so I didn’t manage to put a team together that I really liked. It’s no surprise the winning team had Kangaskhan, Talonflame, Rotom and Garchomp – the most used things in this metagame so far. Honestly, this format is wearing thin with me already with how overcentralising I think Talonflame in particular is, but I’ll have fun trying to build something to counter these four.

Brandon has had a good start in the Masters category, and it really didn’t surprise me he won the thing with the amount of battles he does on Showdown.

Fantastic weekend, I hope we have more of these events soon!

  8. galladeava says:

Top event, gutted to have gone out in the first round. Very annoyed by the organisation of the Manchester/Liverpool bus I’m sad to say. I feel that the delay was a reason the match went so poorly for me. Rushed into the game, no change to get a drink, practice match, or even a pee in! But what can you do.

A good day and hopefully will qualify for the next one! And as Havak says, the eShop vouchers are going to come in handy.

  9. Now that I’m sober and not talking nonsense I’ll actually comment on the event.

It was a great day and well run, besides the whole fiasco with the Manchester coach, but that was out of the control of the event organisers on the day.

I was the first name drawn out of the hat, and I followed that up by falling off my chair as soon as I sat down to compete, hopefully not many people saw that, but judging by the loud high pitched squeal I made during the fall, I somehow doubt it. :D

I lost in round 2 to Koryo, in a match which could’ve gone either way until I had some nasty hax go against me and I just couldn’t recover from it, nevertheless, that’s the game we play.

After that loss there was nothing left to do except become the leader of the Toquill cheering team.

As Baz said earlier, I too am not surprised he won at all, and he thoroughly deserved it too, beating some top players along the way.

Another great weekend, and I hope there’ll be more of these tournaments to come soon.

  10. Paulvick says:

I really hope tourneys in spain, those are too far where i live

  11. Was a really great day Saturday, I came fourth in the Nottingham qualifiers after losing to Kyriakou then WhiteAfroKing (dammit Jake those last few turns D;) so just missed out on qualifying, but went to support my brother/boyfriend/friends. The event was really well-run, there were some excellent battles and Toquill definitely earned that victory (:
I really hope this becomes at least a yearly event, it’s a fantastic opportunity for the community to meet up and battle furiously, eat loads of free pizza and have funtimes!
Gonna start posting around here more hopefully, now I’m getting more into competitive play. About time! >_>

  12. Baz Anderson says:

Cool video compilation of this event:
