Nintendo UK Presents Pokémon Winter Championships

Nintendo UK is hosting a Pokémon Championships series across the UK, spanning over the rest of November and early December. We can only apologise for any short notice, the information was only recently released. There will be multiple qualifiers held around the UK, which are fan-run events organised by StreetPass Groups that you may have heard of. The finals, which is an official Nintendo UK run event, will be held in London, on an as of yet unknown date and venue.

To qualify for the finals in London, you must reach the top 3 in one of the qualifiers. Unfortunately, the rules do slightly differ from event to event. All will use Double Battle and Flat Battle Rules, however, some will limit you to the Kalos Dex only, while others may allow you to use anything you can catch in X & Y right now. This is noted on the section for each event as either Kalos Only or National Dex. Prizes will also differ for each tournament, though for the most-part, eShop Vouchers, plushies, and other Nintendo merchandise are likely.

As of right now, we are to assume that these invitations to the finals do not include a travel award, so you’ll have to pay your own way there if you qualify. We will also have to note, that these events are not in conjunction with The Pokémon Company International’s Video Game Championship Series, so you do not have to worry about missing out on Championship Points.

This post will be updated we hear about more events. Continue onto the forum thread where we have an updated list of winners and qualified players!

Had a great time in Gateshead. My dad got top8 before losing to the eventual 3rd place because of some Hax. Unfortunately had to come up against fellow scot SPEevee in top 8. See you in london

  4. Pokawaii says:

Should now hopefully be going to the Banbury event, workload permitting. And if I can get my team ready in time…

  5. woopahking says:

We can’t be sure yet, but it is most likely, yes.

  7. Gilbert says:

  8. Falco says:

Going to attend the Northampton meet, any of you guys going?

You can use Pokémon from the Friend Safari as long as they have a Kalos Pokédex Number :)

Just look on your game through your Central, Coastal, and Mountain sections. If a Pokémon doesn’t appear in any of those three, you can’t use it. Nor can you use Xerneas, Yveltal, Zygarde, or Mewtwo.

  10. Juiceball says:

I qualified in Derry :D Just to confirm, my name is Anthony Lavery lol :P Hopefully, I’ll be going to London if I can round up the moneys to travel there lol

  11. bcaralarm says:

I should be at Brighton this saturday

Thanks that’s great, I need to finalise my team! :D

  13. Havak says:

Taunton event tonight :) should hopefully be able to provide instant updates for that.

Final events are expected to be added soon taking place in Basildon (Essex), Southampton, and Elgin (North Scotland). Also, for anyone who didn’t notice, Cambridge was recently added too!

This should give us our overall set of invitations, which is 63. Expecting a 64-player Single Elimination bracket in London.

See you in London mate! :D

Finally got a team together. Accursed lack of transfer system, but I’m quite pleased given I’ve only spent 5 days making it.

  16. SPEevee says:

Hoping to try my luck up north, perfect excuse to go home for the weekend too~

  17. tamoo says:

Would it be bad etiquette to try my luck at other tournaments around the UK if I’ve already got my invite from Liverpool?  I’ll be going to some others that are close to me anyway to take some friends that want to try and qualify and I want to try some other team ideas I’ve had but it could be harsh to potentially take away some invite places if I do well.  New to the Vgc this year so don’t know if it’s much different to the tcg.

It’s well within the rules. Some people may not like it, but you’re perfectly entitled to do so if you want to try out new ideas / find new ideas. If you did manage to get as far as another last eight, you could intentionally let the other player through if you beat them in order to give them a shot at an invite. Sure, you’ll have crushed some other players’ dreams on the way, but oh well :P

Glad this topic has come up! Because I’m already qualified and I’m still going to Northampton and Derby just for the fun of it. I guess if by some miracle I happen to make top 8 with a joke team I’ll just forfeit at that stage, and it’ll be ok.

Perhaps you should bring a serious team and eliminate the competition for your buddys ;D

I’ll be revolutionising the metagame with the mighty Exploud, my opponents will be quaking fear up until top 8 anyway ;)

Guess it’s up to me to make sure we have a new winner for the Derby event ^_^

    But anything can happen :)

  24. Zog says:

Myself, Ninjames and Koryo won the tickets at the Bangor event :D

  25. peng says:

Qualifiers at Leeds are Andy Waddell (me) Tyler Bakhtiari (Pokeguru01) and somebody else.

    R2: 3XHG-WWWW-WWW3-8GGM
    Semi-Finals / Finals vs Tyler: HZPW-WWWW-WWW3-8GKB
Semi-Finals / Finals because the latter stages of this tournament were so poorly run that I have no idea what this match actually was.

  26. KillerConall says:

Just missed out on qualifying by one spot, bidoof :L

  27. Dozz says:

Today was a pretty hefty drive for a very poorly run tournament if I’m brutally honest. Quite concerning that Nintendo are pumping a huge prize fund into a tournament where qualification chances are decided purely by who’s stood around in the right place at the right time considering a loser was let back into the pairings just to make numbers up. Add that to some pretty blatent friend rule, no real tournament software (Just a scrap of paper and some notes) and people playing all sorts of numbers of games to qualify, it didn’t sing any praises for the grassroots scene.

I mean, is it too much to ask to have a row of tables for matches, organised pairings for each round, and a clear path to proceed? I know tournament running isn’t everyones forte, and the chap in charge was well meaning enough but still… I also respect that Nintendo UK have pumped a lot of money into this for the finals though, and it seems like a pretty awful way to decide who gets a shot at it in the end.

At least I got a gnarly bratwurst to eat afterwards.

  28. Zog says:

Yeah, there’s probably been some really variable quality in these. At Bangor everything went smoothly, and I think could’ve only reasonably been improved if somebody had a capture card. But with so much left to the grassroots groups there’s gonna be some dodgy ones.

    Looking forward to London! :D

And smashing Koryo now I’ve re-EVed my rotom. its a hard life when you specifically EV to outspeed something but can’t count, lose the speedtie and die to it :P

  29. Havak says:

List of events is now final.

    P.S. Zog is a n00b.

  30. Ashtopher says:

Hi, I’ve noticed you’ve misspelled Eileen’s name for the Brighton winners.
