Nintendo UK Presents Pokémon Winter Championships

Nintendo UK is hosting a Pokémon Championships series across the UK, spanning over the rest of November and early December. We can only apologise for any short notice, the information was only recently released. There will be multiple qualifiers held around the UK, which are fan-run events organised by StreetPass Groups that you may have heard of. The finals, which is an official Nintendo UK run event, will be held in London, on an as of yet unknown date and venue.

To qualify for the finals in London, you must reach the top 3 in one of the qualifiers. Unfortunately, the rules do slightly differ from event to event. All will use Double Battle and Flat Battle Rules, however, some will limit you to the Kalos Dex only, while others may allow you to use anything you can catch in X & Y right now. This is noted on the section for each event as either Kalos Only or National Dex. Prizes will also differ for each tournament, though for the most-part, eShop Vouchers, plushies, and other Nintendo merchandise are likely.

As of right now, we are to assume that these invitations to the finals do not include a travel award, so you’ll have to pay your own way there if you qualify. We will also have to note, that these events are not in conjunction with The Pokémon Company International’s Video Game Championship Series, so you do not have to worry about missing out on Championship Points.

This post will be updated we hear about more events. Continue onto the forum thread where we have an updated list of winners and qualified players!

  1. Well I’ve had another really enjoyable day getting to hang out with friends I don’t get to see very often.

Being drawn against Barry in round 1 was pretty much the last thing I wanted to happen, not least because he’s a great player but because we’re also good friends too.

Nevertheless I soldiered on and went into the top 4 (uncharted territory for me!) where I lost a close match against Eden where a little bit of hax could’ve swung the momentum either way.

And then came the 3rd place play off which was far and away the closest match I’ve ever played! So close that all that remained at the end of the battle was my azumarill on 3hp

And the pit and pendulum pub was fantastic too, definitely need to go there again. Thankfully I don’t think anyone noticed when I fell over a bunch of chairs on the way out :D

Battle video from the 3rd place play off for anyone who might be interested is QBHG-WWWW-WWW2-ZQ4W

I think next time we’ll skip the Pokémon and just go straight to a bar. Or I will anyway.

  3. SPEevee says:

How long do these tournaments tend to take? I’m thinking of coming to the Newcastle event but it’ll depend on how long it’s estimated to last till.

    Better bring the furfrou

It really depends on how many players show up. StreetPass Newcastle is probably the 2nd or 3rd largest StreetPass Group in the UK (behind Manchester and possibly London), so I’d expect at least a 64-player Single Elimination tournament. They aren’t starting until quite late compared to some other events, so this one could end quite late as well. If they manage to run it all smoothly though, 6 or 7pm isn’t out of the question.

Manchester had a prize draw, lunch break, and Mario Kart tournament during which no Pokémon tournament battles took place, and still managed to finish for 6pm. So, my estimate is any tournament should be done in 4-6 hours depending on turnout and what other activities they plan on doing besides the tournament.

going to the portsmouth and london events and i will crush everyone in sight to quallify for the event at my home town

  7. Toquill says:

    Just noticed the Northampton one!!

Definitely able to go to this :D

    Anyone else going?

  8. I will be going to the Northampton one for sure. Might bring some friends along too. wonder how many people will attend the Northampton one

  9. Just noticed the Northampton one!!

Definitely able to go to this :D

    Anyone else going?

Northampton isn’t miles away from me. If any of my friends fancy a day out there I might go with a fun team for a laugh :)

  10. Firestorm says:

If you guys could send battle videos to Eiganjo with what match it was (Top 4, Top 2, etc) and who you were against along with location (Manchester, Newcastle, etc), we can get them up on the Nugget Bridge YouTube channel. He got a 3DS capture card and I expect he’s been waiting to use it!

  11. noj87 says:

i would love to go to the Newcastle one but only just discovered this today :S.
    sadly im working 🙁

  12. Havak says:

Yeah, it’s really sad about the short notice.

I’ve PMed Eiganjo with my semi-final and final matches, Rushan.

Also, I should hopefully have the information on the London Finals, along with more qualifiers, later this week.

Sean Towey should have me vs Barry on the Semi Finals on his Capture Card 3DS. He says to give him credit for it if he does.

  14. Zog says:

Me and my flatmate took 1st and 2nd at the bangor tournament a couple of weeks ago, but apparently it was too late to give tickets. :( (even though it was the same day as the manchester one which is pretty bidoof stupid)

OH WELL NOW TO DO IT AGAIN

at least i got a load of free plush tepigs

  15. P3DS says:

Meh, my friend and I would have gone to manchester… If there was more notice… Liverpool was an option, but neither of us were ready… Maybe next time…

  16. Trainer Falc says:

So by Kalos dex only does this mean any of the pokemon you can catch in x/y before postgame or only 6th gen pokemon?

  17. Trainer Falc says:

Winter tournaments say I can only use kalos pokemon, but by kalos only does this mean I can use pokemon from past games that are in the kalos dex (rotom, kangaskhan, etc) or just new 6th gen pokemon?

  18. Gonzo says:

Kalos Dex Pokemon so you’re allowed to use any Pokemon that can be found in any of the three Regional Dexes except Mewtwo, Xerneas, Yveltal and Zygarde.

Thanks :) I thought it’d be stupid to have only like 70 pokemon and no megas XD

  20. ChaosPhoenixxx says:

The Reading Event is – National Dex Rules and I’ll have a location set up by the end of today sorry for the inconvenience

  21. ChaosPhoenixxx says:

The event on the Reading page is not a qualifier if you could be so kinda as to remove the date from the reading event thank you 🙂

  22. Havak says:

    Reading event is cancelled! Apologies.

  23. Trainer Falc says:

Are the games going to be swiss or single elimination?

  24. Are the games going to be swiss or single elimination?

They’ve all been single elimination so far, so I’d expect that to be the case for the rest of them too

  25. Havak says:

Mainly Single Elimination, but that depends on the group and the number of players. Derby, for example, are hoping to run Swiss or Double Elimination.

  26. Trainer Falc says:

Thanks, swiss would be sooooooooo much better though. If a friend can make me a team then I plan on going to the portsmouth one (super busy with college and no vgc team in x/y yet)
When bank comes out I’ll be able to use RNG’d stuff from 5th gen so it won’t be a problem in the future

But by then, I think RNGing will be sussed by then, so you could breed in gen 6

  28. Trainer Falc says:

Maybe, but for now all i can do is wait for bank. maybe i can get some safari stuff done for next week if i’m not busy with college still -.-

  29. SPEevee says:

    Prized Furfrou hype.

Good to know, booked a train that leaves at about 8:45pm (cheap trains) so that should leave me plenty of time.

So in short, confirming my attendance~ c:

  30. Jen says:

Yeah sorry Zog! I did try to get that one counted! :(

We were told we weren’t allowed to use our previous event, so we made another one on request of Nintendo’s Community guy. It was only once we’d rearranged that we saw Manchester’s of the same date did count – yes rather frustrating!
In the end though there were a lot of people who missed out on the 3rd due to other commitments, so it also makes it a bit fairer for the community as a whole, going again.

Think of the 3rd as a practice run for the big thing! :P

P.S for any North Wales people who wish to attend our Qualifier on the 24th, please join the event page and email us to guarantee your place! Thank you :)
