Nintendo UK Presents Pokémon Winter Championships

Nintendo UK is hosting a Pokémon Championships series across the UK, spanning over the rest of November and early December. We can only apologise for any short notice, the information was only recently released. There will be multiple qualifiers held around the UK, which are fan-run events organised by StreetPass Groups that you may have heard of. The finals, which is an official Nintendo UK run event, will be held in London, on an as of yet unknown date and venue.

To qualify for the finals in London, you must reach the top 3 in one of the qualifiers. Unfortunately, the rules do slightly differ from event to event. All will use Double Battle and Flat Battle Rules, however, some will limit you to the Kalos Dex only, while others may allow you to use anything you can catch in X & Y right now. This is noted on the section for each event as either Kalos Only or National Dex. Prizes will also differ for each tournament, though for the most-part, eShop Vouchers, plushies, and other Nintendo merchandise are likely.

As of right now, we are to assume that these invitations to the finals do not include a travel award, so you’ll have to pay your own way there if you qualify. We will also have to note, that these events are not in conjunction with The Pokémon Company International’s Video Game Championship Series, so you do not have to worry about missing out on Championship Points.

This post will be updated we hear about more events. Continue onto the forum thread where we have an updated list of winners and qualified players!

Hi, I’ve noticed you’ve misspelled Eileen’s name for the Brighton winners.

    Cheers :)

  2. Havak says:

Congratulations to Tamao Cameron for being the first player to qualify at two events! He also won both of them (Liverpool and Banbury).

However, it’s come to light that invites are passed down if a previously qualified player earns another. In this case, the fourth place player at Banbury will get an invite.

If anyone is going to another event this weekend, feel safe in that you’re only costing people an invite if you beat them in the first few rounds :P

There may be a tournament in York added, and another one somewhere else (very late notice)! But better to have even more events :D

  3. Carbonific says:

Has anyone else gotten their emails yet? Not knowing where this thing is makes it kinda difficult to book accommodation.

If they send them out after the last qualifying event (Derby). That sure isn’t leaving a lot of time.

Whoever hosted your event will have the information now, I thought most would have messaged their players. I’ll shoot you a PM.

  5. tamoo says:

Thanks, I was obviously pretty happy that invites were being passed down if I won any other events so looking forward to going to Derby now :)

Also I too haven’t received any information regarding nationals from either liverpool or banbury.  It’s not too much of a concern as the liverpool group are organising a coach down but it would be nice to know more details if possible.

That final vs lee (osirus) was the most I’ve had to think in the short time I’ve been playing this game :P

One more thing I’d like to note – it is also recommended that you notify the tournament organiser that you’ve already qualified at previous events if you want to take part (this goes for everyone).

Yes, certain groups are organising their own travel which Nintendo are going to pay for, but if any qualified players want to see the venue, I can show you in a PM.

  8. Toquill says:

Won at Northampton, haxing Baz in the final :]

Had such an amazing time, it was so great meeting such fab people. Looking forward to the final!

Joe Wilson (aka Russian) came 3rd btw, go Railers!

  9. Koryo says:

Yeah, there’s probably been some really variable quality in these. At Bangor everything went smoothly, and I think could’ve only reasonably been improved if somebody had a capture card. But with so much left to the grassroots groups there’s gonna be some dodgy ones.

    Looking forward to London! :D

And smashing Koryo now I’ve re-EVed my rotom. its a hard life when you specifically EV to outspeed something but can’t count, lose the speedtie and die to it :P

don’t blame me because you can’t count n00b, just make sure you don’t get knocked out first round in London :P

  10. SPEevee says:

On the one hand I won’t be going to my first TCG regional next week, on the other hand I will be attending the big tournament down in London and meeting up with my sister for the first time in years!
Had an awesome time at the Elgin meet-up. It was considerably smaller than the Newcastle one but I didn’t face any sheep (sorry Mark). Loads of fun little extra things to do after the main tournament as well.
Can’t wait for next week! Not sure what’s happening with the travel arrangements, hopefully they get in touch before it becomes too expensive.

  11. So I spent the whole of northampton drinking shots along with everyone else,

    short interlude;
    dzfkghsdugusdgisdg

First round of shots started by Russian.

Toquill had an experience lets leave it there ;)

  12. Ok we’re going  out to get wrecled, goodinthgt everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. NidoRich says:

So we’re down to just the Derby event. Let’s make it one to remember, only 3 spots left.

    Who will claim them?

  14. Trainer Falc says:

Does anyone know whether the London final will be swiss or single elimination?

  15. woopahking says:

They told be it’ll be single elimination.

  16. Trainer Falc says:

Ah man, swiss would be sooooo much better -.-

  17. Havak says:

My expectation is Single Elimination, yes. Hopefully they can fit something better in, but even something like Double Elimination would be difficult in the amount of time available.

  18. Trainer Falc says:

Yeah I know. Oh well, maybe I’ll make it to round 2 then, haha

  19. woopahking says:

I need to make some predictions for London.

    3rd will be… A SHEEP FROM ELGIN
    2nd will be… TOQUILL
1st will be… A CORNISH PASTY BROUGHT BY TOBY FROM CORNWALL

  20. galladeava says:

    Alex Holdway signing on here.

Big thanks to those who ran the Derby one yesterday, was my first VGC tournament (I literally had to ask where to change my Rotom forme and get someone to trade my Haunter!) and had a good time.

Plus, being the only person to go 6-0 certainly was a treat  :P

No email yet, I assume wait for details? Or can I get a PM from someone who knows?

  21. Havak says:

I’ll shoot you a message if you still need it, Alex.

Also, an event for Lincoln has just been added! It’s on Wednesday, so if anyone needs a last chance tournament to try and qualify, that’s where you’ll have to go.

  22. galladeava says:

Yes please Chris, would appreciate that.

Went to Lincoln today, and fair play to Sam who ran it so well, even giving us some Swiss. Quite the contrast from Leeds for sure!

Looks like I’ll be seeing a bunch of you on Saturday then. Not exactly in my favorite bit of town though….

  26. Gyzarus says:

I am absolutely gutted I missed out on the Leeds event, I was in the city at the time and would have being an excellent way to try out VGC for the first time. probably means the first VGC I enter is nationals. (assuming you don’t need to qualify, but I don’t see any information regarding regionals in the UK).

If anyone has any information on local tournaments within Leeds, Huddersfield, Wakefield or Sheffield (South Yorkshire basically) please PM me, Im aware most places that do the tournaments will specialise in TCGs such as Yu-Gi-Oh, Magic or Pokémon TCG but I have being out of the TCG loop since getting a weekend job and Uni. I’m eager to play this game competitively, and id like to meet people before UK Nationals 2014 as to not be a complete loner there.
