You must have your Player ID linked to your Pokemon.com account that your game card is associated with before the competition begins to receive Championship Points. Results will be released mid-July.
I gave up at 3-7 because I discovered that I had completely failed to include any good checks for Sylveon and Mega Gardevoir, and it seemed like every other team had at least one of those. No idea how Rhydon would have done against sand because I didn’t see a single sand team in those 10 games.
Currently sitting at 13 – 14, and a bit nervous about finishing the last three…
second loss of the day should not have happened… i really, REALLY shoulda thought better about scalding into a Heatran sitting next to a pretty much dead and burnt Mamoswine locked into earthquake.
Giving up 8-7. I had a good start but I’ve just lost all will to play the game after yesterday. My team needs serious work and so do I, I think. Good luck folks
Finished at about 1630 with a record of 20-10. I should’ve stopped when I got to 1668 but I digress. IC matches seemed to be filled with hax this month, though a lot of it could’ve been prevented if I played better. Also, having an offensive team means you’re usually a Rock Slide flinch or Paralysis away from losing momentum.
Time to start teambuilding again
Marathon’d 30 games. Ended 23-7, the same record as in April. Ended up with a rating nearly 20 points higher than last time, though, clocking in at 1732.
Was using a team that I’ve been using for a while. So some people know what it is:
Salamence
Kangaskhan
Infernape
Bisharp
Clefairy
Rotom-W
Went something like 19-11. 4 losses were DCs that I wasn’t losing, which made me get downpaired the rest of the tournament and the rest just dropped me at preview screen.
Encountered a lot of hax and hated playing for majority of the tournament because I used Arcanine > Entei.
I used a joke team in the IC and went 17-13 or 16-14. Had quite a bit of fun playing this team.
“>
The standard lead was Raichu + Chansey. Fake out + Skill Swap T1. Then proceed to fire of discharge with 60% paralysis rate + 20% flinch rate, while boosting chanseys evasion and special attack. With Sableye or Heliolisk in the back to copy the boosts and sweep. Skill swapping serene grace onto tyranitar was also great with glorious 60% flinch chance rock slides.
Oh man, what a fun 30 games that was.
Ended up going 23-7 after playing like 3 Gardevoir TR teams on my last day, which is arguably my worst match-up.
I picked Alakazam about 10-13 games, it’s a very situational Mega, so running double Mega would make sense here. When I tried that in testing though I felt that it would limit me way too much in picking my 4, so I opted to go with a strong 5 regular Pokémon instead.
Alakazam + Volcarona have really good synergy, with Alakazam taking care of Terrakion/Landorus-T, while Volcarona can shield it from Sucker Punches and Kangaskhan in general, while also dealing with Aegislash and Bisharp.
Talking about Bisharp, Trace + Skill Swap shennanigans to boost Defiant are a thing, but I don’t think I’ve managed to pull it off in the tournament. It gave me another way of dealing with Aegislash, and put on a lot of pressure against Salamence teams.
The team wouldn’t probably function very well without the Virizion, giving me a lot of general offensive pressure with the great 3 move coverage. Being able to OHKO things like Charizard Y, Gastrodon, Swampert, Kangaskhan, Heatran, Volcarona and put heavy damage on bulky Waters / Rotom-Wash all with one Pokémon is pretty amazing. It also helped me not get completely obliterated by Breloom, a Pokémon that gives the team a lot of trouble.
Rotom-W is there for type synergy, for having a way of burning things without relying on Flame Body and to deal with the Genies a bit better, especially Landorus-T if I can’t bring Alakazam. Very standard, not much to say about it. It only missed one Will-O-Wisp all tournament (of the maybe 3-4 I launched) and hit all the Hydro Pumps (maybe 5).
Landorus-T was there for Intimidate and to have a way of actively threaten Heatran, because I wouldn’t feel comfortable with just Rotom-W and Virizion. It was very useful in a lot of games, and I am glad I was using Assault Vest over Scarf. It helped make a few tough matchups a lot easier, and had great synergy with the rest of the team.
Here are 3 Battle Videos, for those who want to see the team in action. The first two videos feature Mega Alakazam, the third shows how the team functions without it. The second one especially is pretty cool because it shows off Skill Swap well.
1st: HZDG-WWWW-WW29-BVNB
2nd: C4FG-WWWW-WW29-CWVK
3rd: GRAG-WWWW-WW29-C28D
Just finished this challenge and went 21-9, with 7-3 each day. Cool teams around, totally deserves the 9 losses since I made a lot of misplay. GG to all
Ended up going 21-9, the same record as the April International. I should have been 22-8, but a day 1 loss due to server issues changed that. In April I used my Linoone flinch support team, this time around I tried a Mega Gardevoir trick room team out. It was very successful, and I learned some important lessons in the losses I had that I can use to make this team even better:
– In general, I feel that getting a few practice matches on ranked would benefit prior to participating in tournament matches as a warmup. The second day, two of my three losses were in the first three games. The third day, I lost the first three matches before winning the next six in a row before losing the last game because of a crit in the beginning of he match.
– The Gardevoir/Sylveon combo wasn’t used as much as I would like. Many times I felt that my Dragalge would have done more work under trick room. Especially against opposing fairies that were 2HKO’s with hyper voice where an adaptability and life orb boosted sludge bomb OHKO’s all fairies aside from Mawile obviously.
– Opposing Amoonguss were the thorn in my side the whole tournament. Need a good counter like Heatran or Rotom Heat with safety goggles, with the later even helping against Breloom.
Yeah. I had a team with Aurorus/Mawile/Cresselia for while, with Talonflame as 4th mon. At 2 last slots, i had super random and even extremely silly things, such as bulky and speedy Subsitute Garchomp with ROSELI BERRY and Stone Edge, mixed LO Garchomp with Fire Blast, Weakness Policy Cradily, and Scarf Primeape. In general i slapped 2 random mons, and ended up making Talonflame CB variant. Battled only 14 times, too, with result of 9 – 5. I felt that 14 battles was enough. Since several reasons, team ended up being pretty mediocre, and i gladly wished i brought other variant with Aurorus/Cresselia/Mawile/Gastrodon/Talonflame/Virizion, which allowed me to peak 1800s at Battle Spot and 1650s at Showdown!. I was very weak to Mega Zard Y teams and being hopeless against Rotom-H. Despite team’s numerous flaws,i had lots of fun, and team still was kinda funny to use, even though if it was kinda mediocre. My rating was 1560ish, i think.
Few notes of my mons:
There isnt much to say about it. I wanted power for it so Expert Belt was only usable choice. Virizion OHKOs Kanga, which is cool, and improved my matchup against Rain and water types in general. It also had Rock-coverage, being only mon with ability to hit Rotom-H and Charizard super effectively in this team. I wished i was able to use LO, though.
Finished 19-11, started off at like 15-4 but lost some close games down the stretch.
I think I played 18 games total and went 13-5, which is okay for me. I really don’t like how the competitions are always forcing you to play a lot of games in a short amount of time, so I just settle with having a fun time in the few games I play. I think my rating in the end was 1620-1630.
This was the team I used. I have tested it a lot on Battlespot and on Showdown, so it’s a team I’m very familiar with and that I enjoy a lot. Very standard stuff, but I feel that some of my sets can surprise my opponents a lot (Protect on Kangaskhan, Sludge Bomb on Amoonguss, Sub + Wide Guard on Aegi), which often can swing momentum my way and decide the game. Sludge Bomb Amoonguss ran over a team in my last game against a double genie lead with Breloom and Kang in the back and that’s why I love the move so much over Giga Drain. It really hits a lof of things neutrally that otherwise expect to wall it completely.
Aegislash is still the best Pokemon in the game right now in my opinion, and having both Substitute and Wide Guard gives you two ways to create a win condition as opposed to only one or the other. You can’t hit Kangaskhan, sure, but the rest of the team should have an easy time against her, so it doesn’t matter.
The weirdest stuff I faced was a Double Team Greninja with Shell Bell. The guy set up 4 Double Teams while I KOed the rest of his team, so all I had to do afterwards was hit his Greninja once. Didn’t see any teams that was super interesting, though, but there was a big decrease in genie usage in my games.
The greatest challenge was the timer. It took some time getting adjusted to the 15 seconds less each turn, but only having 15 minute games was nice and I think that made the IC worth playing to practice in a more “true” VGC environment
Ahaha, I forgot I signed up for this one. o.O Well time to get cracking.
Basically using a slight variation from my Regionals team which didn’t really perform so well. Not really looking to win, I just need to get used to battling and thinking strategically, and any opportunity for practice is a good one.
Tried again on my second cartridge, but stopping after 15 battles because it’s only gonna get worse from here. This time I finished 14-1 with a 1714 rating.
I played early in the morning so I faced mostly Japanese players, but I did play DaFlo, who I lost to in a 4-4 game that went to time lmao.
Ha! I went 15 – 15. 3 – 7 on day one, 7 – 3 on day two, and 5 – 5 on day three.
A fairly derpy team, but it worked out alright in the end. One thing I noticed about midway through day 1 is how the team didn’t really have much to handle Fire-types, especially Zard-Y, with the exception of Greninja. It was a pretty nice learning experience, although I suppose i’ll have to review the videos (I recorded all my matches for this reason actually… probably should have taken notes too though) to try to figure out more on what i did wrong and what I did right. On the subject of my team (in reverse order of usage):
Sylveon
Celine Dion (Used 14 out of 30 games)
I was actually surprised by how few times I brought it, especially since it did pretty well in most of those games. I had actually used Life Orb’s EV spread, and it worked out pretty nicely. Pixie Plate is a rather good item for Sylveon, giving it a bit more oomph to Hyper Voice and Quick Attack, while still letting it switch between attacks. Quick Attack wound up being used a couple of times, but it does deal quite a bit of damage and seems like it can pick up a KO on quite a few things from low yellow. I would consider using this pokemon again, and hopefully bring it more times.
Metagross
Tenacious D (Used 15 out of 30 games)
Actually thought I used this guy less, which to me indicates I should have thought a little more about which Mega I should have put on my team. It did perform a bit as expected, so I have no complaints there… I just went into a lot of games thinking I should not bring it. Mega Metagross is a solid mega for sure, and I definitely didn’t feel like it was wasted, so I will consider using it again… I just probably will put more thought into Mega choice. And contrary to the song, You can apparently kill the metal.
Heatran
Bastille (Used 20 out of 30 games)
I actually went with a Heatran that had one less Special Defense stat than maximum… but I don’t think that affected damage rolls too much: It was usually smashed with Water or Ground-type attacks that would probably have KO’d it anyways. I did agonize a bit over a choice between Heat Wave and Overheat… and think I made the right choice: Wide Guard was hardly seen and I managed to play around it (or for the most part: The threat of it being used) pretty well so that wasn’t an issue. On top of that, it actually picked up a couple of double KOs that i really needed. Other than that, it did adequately, although I will probably look for other Fire-types next time. (I was actually considering Volcarona, but couldn’t figure out a team I felt would work well… so it was either Arcanine or Heatran. I chose the latter because I really wanted to keep Gourgeist… speaking of)
Gourgeist-XL
Smashing (Pumpkins… get it? cus this team’s nicknames are all based on singers/bands.) (Used 20 out of 30 games)
Oh Gourgeist-XL… I wish you did better. It did its primary job, to be a general purpose counter to most physical attackers, alright most times… it failed miserably at its secondary job of playing hero and sticking around long enough to either wear down the opponent or manage a win on time. (One game got fairly close too, down to about 2 minutes or so.) I think it may still do alright on a different team (and by someone with different expectations) as a kind of Rotom proxy… it does have a lot to fear from ice and fire special attacks, and Knock Off… which are all pretty darn common. By the way: I learned that Phantom Force IS a contact move, and it lost me a game. Sorry Gourgeist, I wish it could work out, but you just weren’t very… Smashing.
Liepard
C. Daniels (Used 25 out of 30 games)
Two things first: 1. Liepard is my bro. 2. The whole reason I came up with the band/musician theme for the nicknames is for a horribly complicated joke involving the fact that I was planning on using said theme for the Houston Regionals this fall and the Alabama song “If You’re Gonna Play in Texas (You gotta have a fiddle in the band)” And which fiddle player is more memorable than good old Charlie Daniels?
So Liepard was without a doubt the MVP of this team. I have been a fan of it for awhile for its ability to capitalize on an opponent’s misstep and force a loss of tempo, especially paired with something that can put off a lot of pressure. This set is one I’ve used since 2013 and will probably continue to use since Encore and Taunt can do a good job of taking away options for an opponent. Especially Encore because if you manage to encore something like Fake Out, Protect, or a boosting move, the opponent can either Switch or try to take out the Liepard… or get chain encored and rendered useless. (which actually happened once in the tournament) Taunt is for stuff like Amoonguss and Thundurus (it would have to have be Timid and can’t have less than 220 Speed EVs to guarantee outspeeding) or to attempt to stop TR (Fairly sure most TR setters run Mental Herb) and doesn’t see as much usage… Still, as I said: Liepard is my bro, and I will definitely use it again. (Bonus Fun Fact: Apparently Foul Play vs a +1 Mega Salamence does not net you a KO… it just leaves the MegaMence with 1hp. Rather curious on how that was managed.)
Greninja
Vanilla Ice (Used 26 out of 30 games)
Go Ninja Go Ninja Go! My opinion on Scarf Greninja is pretty mixed: It performed its job exactly as I intended and did kick some major tail in the IC… but I’m torn on just how effective Scarf was on it in the end. It was intended to be pretty much the fastest Ice Beam guaranteed in order to pretty much take out every Landorus available.. and I can’t think of a single time when it didn’t do that. Rock Slide was similarly chosen for Charizard-Y… which it missed the KO on one… so I definitely misunderstood just how bulky they can get. Low Kick was mandatory and Scald seemed like a fairly safe option to go with for a final move (and it was) so all-in-all I had a pretty great general purpose nuke that was fairly safe to start with vs. most of the metagame. Main downside to Greninja is the SEVERE 4MSS it suffers from, as Grass Knot and Gunk Shot would have both been pretty great to have had at points in the tournament… but I generally stand by my Moveset. Not entirely sure what to say actually: It went faster than everything (except for that one bloody Timid Scarf Jolteon. Seriously… Who Does That?!) and it picked up the knockouts I wanted it to. I can see myself sticking it on the next team… just at least initially with Expert Belt to see if that might work better in general… if not, I may go back to Scarf again.
Uploaded one of my favorite battles at 7C9G-WWWW-WW29-DTCT. The team I fought looked like I would have severe trouble against on the pre-battle screen, which was a feeling reinforced by losing Heatran on turn 1 to a Mega Garde HP Ground. And so I sent out Liepard…
EDIT: man sprites never work for me.
at long last, my team in pgl’s most bootiful format. but I also went 4 – 1 because I am extremely lazy to do 30 battles. but I’ll probably have some more.. later
I ended 25-5 with a rating of around 1735-ish. I was using a team based off Aerilate Hyper Voice + Mold Breaker Earthquake with has good coverage against everything but Thundurus and Zapdos.
seems like majority are finished. I’m not getting any opponents..lol I’ve been trying for almost an hour now..
I’ve had to call it a day at 20 matches. Disappointingly I ended with a record of 11-9 after a first day of 8-2. It either got more challenging or I got worse. Most likely a mixture of the two. I ran out of time over the weekend and went 1-3 yesterday and 2-4 today. Never done anything like this before but I did enjoy it despite my demise.
I ran a team of Yanmega, Terrakion, Hydreigon, Thundurus, Ludicolo and Megagross. Hardly brought the mega so I feel I made a poor choice there. On to thinking up a new team
Went 7-3 which is better than I’ve done at any Regionals. Huh.
What I learned coming out of this is 1) I need Protect on more pokes, and 2) I could stand to get better at predicting stuff.

Following my dismal day one, I followed it up going 15-5 in days two and three, coming at an unrespectable 18-12. Days two and three were much less haxy, although I did disconnect once when I was 4-2 up which was frustrating. Although my opponents were somewhat easier during day two due my ranking being in the 1400s, I played pretty solidly in day three, beating opponents in the 1600s allowing me to get a rank around the 1630s, which is pleasing after going 3-7 in day one. The games I lost I can’t really complain about, I really choked two games but that’s Pokemon so well played to my opponents, hopefully I may have sneaked into the top 256 but it is pretty unlikely. Still, the IC turned out alright in the end.
Just can’t wait for VGC 2016 when they’ll make the 30 games Bo3…..
I ended up going either 17-13 or 16-14 with this squad (I forget)
Mega Blastoise is kinda underrated, in my honest opinion.
Couldn’t get out of the 1500 barrel lol. But this made me appreciate assault vest conk and mega gengar more. Those were easily my mvps. Landorus was by far the worst pokemon i could of brought and should of have been a mega kan instead. Liepard did what it was ment to do. The rotom heat and the and the milotic had excellent chemistry together and as a switch in to each other.
Played like 22 games. Went something like 11-11 or 12-10.
Yeah everytime I would bring lando I lose because everyone had a hp ice. Like everything scarf ninetails lol.
Ended up 26-4
Today I lost to a guy who predicted my Turn One Protect with Landorus and in the second one I lost to a japanese guy that I outplayed every turn but managed to get lucky with damage rolls and sleep turns.
Fun fact, he had in the message “Swagger is god” and when the match started to became hard for me I swaggered his Thundurus with mine which broke through and crit me a pokémon that would have survived, but it is what it is.
Overall i’m pretty happy about my result, despite losing only to hax which is part of the game so I have to accept it, and in a 30 rounds tournament matches determined by RNG are expected
Like everytime there’s an IC, I worked all weekend. At least this time I managed to play 4 games and win all of them.
I faced mostly low-rank stuff since I was in the 1500’s, and the only higher ranked player I faced (around the 1670) was running an interesting White Herb Blaziken with Rock Slide…
Definitely had fun for the time it lasted ^-^
Finished 24-6 with some 17XX rating that I can’t check anymore. Probably a lower one, because starting later didn’t work out too well for me. Here are my stats, so if someone feels like calcing this…
My goal actually was 25-5, as mentioned in that post before it, and it was, well, just so close to the end in the 29th game that I failed it. Whatever. I had a great time playing some more with this team and want to thank my various opponents for great matches.
Not going to say too much stuff about my team here. I’ll do that on my personal blog later this month (since I don’t think NB would be too interested in getting it onto the front page, given my results that were just a few plays short of being notable, sadly). I used it — only with the probably worse purely special Salamence — at the Italian Nationals before. Except for me literally throwing it all away in the last turn of the last Swiss round, it was a good run there, so it’s clear I wanted a nice Global Link Battle Box picture of the team.
Some fun facts:
~ The only player that disconnected against me was the lowest rated one, at 1356.
~ Rock Slide is such a good move. If I remember correctly, I stole absolutely no game in the whole run thanks to Rock Slide (but didn’t get to try it a lot either, just won or lost in other ways). However, unfortunately exactly that 29th game went lost to White Herb Rock Slide Blaziken that did White Herb Rock Slide Blaziken things. The White Herb ended up being clearly better than Life Orb in this game and he had one single attempt to see my Salamence flinch, and that turn would be deciding the game based on whatever the RNG said. Well, I’m not complaining about losing only 1 game out of 30 to the best worst move in the game! It’s actually an excellent ratio, and one that’s basically not feasible to get with various popular archetypes like a lot of which we saw at Japanese Nats. Rock Slide hate is a good thing to include.
~ I had to play a full 21 games before I ran into my first Greninja, bane of my existance. I faced two total of them at the end, and I won both games. As for Talonflames, found only and didn’t even have to trade for it. Talonflame sucks.
~ I faced Kingdra rain two times, and no Ludicolo rain. Normally, Ludicolo rain would be everywhere on Battle Spot on a good day.
~ Faced one Calm Mind Cresselia. I played slowly as soon as I saw that move, but ultimately still ended up killing her and winning the game without timer. Building on that, I actually had not a single game that went to time. (Contrary to Italy, where I had won one by successfully stalling a damaged Charizard with Amoonguss of all things.)
~ Oh yeah, one “Cybertron sand” mirror. It was a good game and we both eventually figured, it just had to be decided on the Salamence Speed tie, because not going for it would have been the free loss if the other player went for it alone. I lost.
~ Chronological streaks (longest bolded):
4 wins
1 loss
2 wins
2 losses
6 wins
2 losses
11 wins
1 loss
1 win
And then a compilation of nice replays to finish it up.

#8: vs. Azazel (NB), rated 1532 at the time
Charizard/FWG/Cresselia, remotely similar to what Christian used but less hostile to my team. I got the best start into the game I could possibly ask for, but then something unexpected happens…
CXCG-WWWW-WW29-F8HW
#13: vs. Red from the USA, rated 1649 at the time
First Gardevoir matchup of the marathon. As much as I generally hate to face Gardevoirs with about any team out there, I actually really like the matchup with quicksand, not remembering a single loss ever. This game shows how to almost surgically dismantle it.
YU3W-WWWW-WW29-F8YH
#15: vs. Ben from the USA, rated 1569 at the time
Hail Room, even with good old Toxic Orb Hariyama. One could say I had to face the beast I had awoken a long time ago, and I was legitimately afraid of this matchup as soon as I saw it. But I have one very important anti-TR tech, and that is my trusty German sword. Without it, there’d be no way I could win.
ZJ8G-WWWW-WW29-F8L9
#17: vs. Zi-ma from Japan, rated 1628 at the time
Mawile rain with Kingdra, a matchup I’m not too experienced with. It was a great game and I felt like I was in control for most of it, but then…I played one turn wrongly and got totally wrecked. The classic rain shone trough!
2XGW-WWWW-WW29-F8MW
#18: vs. DannyTDS (NB), rated 1589 at the time
Already had Gardy and rain + bulky Steel before, now here they are combined in one matchup. Opinionated but most definitely right: Guys, don’t run Assault Vest Scrafty when you don’t absolutely have to. Lum is better!
LGUG-WWWW-WW29-F8Z4
#20: vs. Japanese, rated 1570 at the time
Standard Kangaskhan legends Tailwind. Temptation led me. I played this matchup twice in a row and the guy right before that seriously led Heatran Landorus against my team. I was way too greedy to see that again and thus ended up bringing a rather suboptimal selection. Did I still turn it around? Eh, no fun when I say it right here. Prepare for heart attacks.
64UG-WWWW-WW29-F8QP
#23: vs. Japanese, rated 1591 at the time
Your typical Terracott + double Mega cheese. One would think I’d have a solid matchup against that, but something like a lost coin flip on turn 1 can go a long way in giving us an actual game.
7DHG-WWWW-WW29-F8T8
#26: vs. Josh from the UK, rated 1539 at the time
Copypasted Wolfey’s Perish team. Again, my team is probably the best against Perish trap I ever had, but still I have already found a way of losing to Perish trap with it before. But this game here…not so much. He didn’t bring Gengar and this ended up making it easy for me to never let him get into the game. I’m curious if he in fact played badly, and if I could have legitimately fallen apart with how I approached the matchup.
9PKG-WWWW-WW29-F8TT
#28: vs. EB4 from the USA, rated 1623 at the time
Another Kang legends Tailwind team, one of the best games of the run. Naturally, the moody RNG stepped into it right near the end to first let it feel like one player wins…to then still flip it around in favor of the other.
Good night.
For my first VGC team, 15-15. I don’t think that’s too bad though.
Looking at all the teams in this thread, come on, does literally nobody but me prefer Alpha Sapphire over Omega Ruby???????????????????????????????????????
went 21-5, didn’t have time for the last 4. boo.
