First VGC ’14 Regional Date and Locations Revealed (Updated)

Players who aren’t able to make it out to the 2013 Pokémon World Championships might already be looking towards the 2013 – 2014 season. The Premier Tournament Organizers seem to be on the same train of thought because a little bit of digging on the Pokémon website reveals that three locations have already booked their venues and have event details up! The first Regional of the VGC ’14 season will happen on October 27th, 2013. This date is just over two weeks after the release of Pokémon X and Pokémon Y.

Update: It looks like we’re going to get at least two dates for the fall as the NorCal Regional will be taking place on October 13th, 2013 — one day after the release of Pokémon X and Y. Event locations known so far are:

October 13th, 2013

Pleasanton, California

Alameda County Fairgrounds (Building C)
4501 Pleasanton Avenue
94566

October 27th, 2013

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania Convention Center (Terrace Ballroom)
1101 Arch Street
19107

Ft. Wayne, Indiana

Grand Wayne Center Anthony Wayne Ballroom
120 West Jefferson Boulevard
46802

Houston, Texas

Hilton Houston North
12400 Greenspoint Drive
77060

If we have fifteen locations split across three seasons like the current season, we still have one location left. All four of these areas also hosted Regional Championships in the fall last year. If the same pattern holds, the last event will be in Toronto.

    YEAH!

  2. Kamz says:

Kinda sucks, this gives me a feeling the vgc season will be exactly the same no states, cities, or brs for vgc

  3. bearsfan092 says:

That’s kinda awesome we already know this information since it helps immensely with planning.  I was worried this would conflict with Big House (one of the big Melee tournaments), but I see that’s not the case.  Now I just need to hope the winter regional doesn’t conflict with Apex and I’ll be a happy camper.

I’m pretty nervous about using X and Y so soon though.  It’s going to be an extremely raw metagame.

  4. Raikoo says:

surprised they revealed the information this quick, i did hear something about the houston regional from our tournament organizer at a prerelease on saturday.
    i seriously hope we don’t have to use x and y, i already built a team (a good one at that) for houston regionals knowing that it was in october again ;_;
if we are using x and y, it’s essentially going to be the people that can dig up enough information and go through a lot of the new pokemon to see which is the best that are going to do very well

  5. Adib says:

Oh look, my roaming-due-to-work-and-school powers are at work again :)

I’m going to be less than 2.5 hours from the Ft. Wayne regional! I’m really excited to get this news so early. It’s motivated me to get back in the game since I haven’t played since Nats. I really hope it’ll be BW2 just for this fall because, well, I doubt I’ll even be halfway through the game by the time regionals comes around thanks to college.

I’ll be bringing my future fall roommate to this. He’s currently a singles player who I plan to convert over to VGC completely with this event. And if I can snag a few of his friends that he mentioned also plays singles, it’ll be even better

  6. Josh says:

This is interesting. I’m not sure how it’s worked with previous releases before i.e 2011 rules shortly after release of the black/white but I have to feel like 2 weeks isn’t enough time for the meta to stabillise. I definitely think it will hinder the better players a little, or I suppose give more players a shot at making a deep run due to fact nearly everything will be half a surprise. Hopefully many of those players can travel to an event later in the year if it turns out we do have some ruleset involving X&Y carts.

  7. No1 Machop Fan says:

Once again I await locations for Australian championships that I know won’t come.

Except this time I have a little more faith considering we actually got something this year.

  8. The regional that is in my own state is still a 4+ hour drive…

  9. If the pattern follows and the California regional is in San Jose, I have to ride the train for quite a bit of time (。´-д-)

  10. Dreykopff says:

I don’t expect XY just because it isn’t really feasible from a player point of view, contrary to the TCG. They’d need to rush through the story and then also rush with getting the team together, since due to the global release basically everything, including breeding mechanics, would have to be figured out within these two weeks. That probably doesn’t work with Pokémon’s marketing strategy, and they didn’t even use B2W2 when they had the chance to, and that would very well have been feasible for the most part. In the TCG, on the other hand, they just need to get the cards, most of which they get through pre-ordering a box, and then they’re good to go.

    Still hoping for Europe Regionals…

  11. LatiosIsCool says:

im very pumped to see that the next tournament to so soon, but im also nervous too, because po and showdown probably wont have a gen 6 update yet, then i wont have much of a way to test, also not many people will know how to rng either,so i hope atleast the first tournament isnt like vgc 2011, where you can only use gen 6 pokemon because the metagame would be too new for anyone to have a solid team, but thats just my opinion

  12. CytoMiner says:

I agree with what is being said, 2 weeks won’t be feasible to have VGC14 exclusively x and y. Assuming that the rules for the US Winter Regionals are the same as euro Nats (in terms of what pokes are being used) , I think it will be use all mons. Even though we could get away with it in Europe, there’s no chance for the states to have 2 weeks to be prepared. I hope it’s all mons, it would mean team building done now wouldn’t be going to waste.
Dual types and Fairy types will be interesting for sure. Oh, and I’m wondering if there will be any major changes to euro vgc?

  13. Havak says:

I’d have expected probably one Regional to be Black2/White2 and potentially the first Wi-Fi tournament as well… But it’d be interesting to go straight into X/Y!

  14. Crow says:

I hate fall regionals. The closest one is always at least 8 hours away.

  15. BlitznBurst says:

I’ll definitely put this on my schedule, but I really never liked going to Phili. It’s nice and all but I never liked the location or the regional in general. We’ll see what happens though, I won’t know if I’m going or not until probably a week before (as usual).

I wish they did Rhode Island again or had a regional in NY or CT. That’d be nice.

  16. LPFan says:

Will plan on Houston. I wish they would possibly give southern people more regionals that are closer to all southern states in winter and spring, because traveling 10+ hours to regionals just sucks…

  17. Cypher says:

I can’t wait to have McDonalds for breakfast, lunch, and dinner now for Fall Philly Regs again :D

Awesome to see it back at Philly, but hopefully it can come back to New Jersey or even NY

  18. Jakuzure says:

Yay for Fort Wayne! The only Regionals i dont have to drive 5 hours to get to

  19. Bopper says:

Great to see TPCi getting this info out so early. This seems to be a trend by them that I hope continues. It was great having all of the CP from nationals updated the day after, and having this info so early is really helpful. Anyways, I’m still upset that we’re having a 3rd regional in Houston instead of Dallas. Oh well, I’ll be there. As usual.

  20. Cybertron says:

How am I supposed to come to Texas if Philly is on the same day :(

The best venue/organizer to start the season off though! Looking forward to it, might bring a couple of friends down with me too  :)

And I really doubt they are going to do 6th gen. for the first rule set considering how we did BW for fall this year. 2 weeks to beat a game and get a team ready will be hard enough for us, I can’t imagine for more casual players. Also I really doubt we’ll ever see a Regional in NY/NJ again, Philly is where TCG has been for the past like five years and the TO is from PA. Not the easiest to get to but I love the venue and it was really well run last year.

  21. MrFox says:

    Yay, Philly!

  22. hockeyguy605 says:

Philly! I hope they use X&Y, for the selfish reason that it’ll probably be the only regional I attend.

  23. TKOWL says:

Yeah! So happy they’re doing Philly again considering I’m going to be living only a few blocks away due to going to UArts. I might also try to escort other people at my campus to go that day, I’ve already heard the college has interest in Pokemon.

Also, to everyone saying they can only eat McDonalds for the three meals, there’s a mall and the Market Street Station only like three blocks away from the venue (hell, it’s connected to the convention center), so your options ain’t that limited : P

  24. Werford says:

My four hour drive is now a six hour drive, but I’ll still be going to Philly.

I’m assuming they’ll use BW2, but who knows? It might be cool to see X/Y mons there too.

  25. araluen7 says:

Last time I drove to Texas 3 years ago, it took 2 and a half days to get there…and that was to the same general vicinity as Houston.

  26. Firestorm says:

Seems BW2 is the way they’re going. Article Updated.

16 hours to the closest Fall Regional if we get the same setup as last year…

  27. Scott says:

So I’m assuming it’ll be the same grouping as last year, but still hoping they split Toronto and Ft Wayne up… not very cute to have my two closest Regionals on the same weekend.

BW2 thing is incredibly uninteresting, but I think we’d all expected this since we heard the XY release date so can’t imagine anyone is too flustered here. At least it’ll be a good event to recycle NPA teams at, right?

  28. Calm Lava says:

HOUSTON REGGGGGGG whose in! Were the regionals this early last year or did it just seem like they were later because it took them so long to get announced?

  29. Biosci says:

They were on October 14th for the 2013 season, just one week after BW2’s release.

  30. SoulSurvivor says:

Well if Biosci actually goes to Philadelphia, and I want to take this year seriously I’ll definitely be there. I loved this regional last year due to the amount of players in attendance. This will also be the first year I can go to nationals, so time to start off strong.
